In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Knowing the limits of my character and not overstepping those limits. Allowing other people to react and respond to my actions and generally not being unrealistic and being fair with them. Just like any good roleplay scenarios it's about being able to tell a compelling and fun story with the people your with, and powergaming ruins or greatly hinders the ability for people to be able to create these stories. Powergaming often creates overpowered "I'm the MC" characters that don't have any flaws and win no matter what, these characters are just not fun to roleplay with.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Metagaming uses information that your character would not know as an unfair advantage in roleplay scenarios. It can undermine the integrity of the roleplay by having your character take or avoid doing certain actions that would make no sense without the OOC information. Metagaming also gets rid of the whole "role" in role playing by using OOC information that your character would not know and that stops you from making actions from your character's perspective which isn't roleplaying anymore.

Character Name: Remmington Ulrich
Character Race: Highlander
Character Gender: Male
Character Age: 18
Physical Description: He is a 6'0 Highlander, slender looking but built and weighing about 170 lbs, brown hair with a frame that has survived the wilderness and battles.
Roleplay Scenario:

Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

"Expecting me? How intriguing." as I plop down onto the cushion, "I got separated from my family while I was young while our village was raided. I never got any closure about what happened to them, so I've made it my goal to find out what happened to them. I've traveled between towns as a mercenary picking up odd jobs to make a living." I shuffle in my seat and ask the old hag "Do you have any information on what might have happened to my family?"
