Born to a human family of relative wealth, Maela was caged within the house for most of her life. She was given a light education, and expected to become a mother, a housewife, to someone successful. After all, as the eldest sister, she would be the biggest asset for cementing political and economic deals for the family. She was raised with a few tutors, who, although paid by her wealthy parents, seemed to encourage her to think outside of her parent’s box, and she frequently smuggled books of foreign lands into her room. Though she never truly became a scholar, the stories of old and adventures excited her, and Maela developed a certain wanderlust for what could be out there, a discontent within the walls of her home. This would inevitably make her life come crashing down when her parents informed her she would be married off to a man she never met... and she had enough. Sneaking out of the house with all the valuables to her name, she would sell them for a horse and a cloak – leaving home to control her own destiny. Told of a cousin who had done the same, a “wildling” who cared not for law or custom, she left home to find her, and learn how to be free. Adventure gripped her soul, and she left her hometown, unable to stomach a return. She spent the last months of her childhood on the road... wandering – until finally ending up in Haense.
She seems nigh overwhelmed with the new smells and sights of the city, the crowds, the stalls, the food, the air. She takes a minute to process, sensory overload completely deafening her to the question being asked. “H-huh?” She responds, snapping focus to the scene around her. “I’m here to find my cousin, I’m told she might be here...”
