In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Giving the other party or parties a fair opportunity to react, and only emoting with my character's actions and reactions, not the outcomes of those reactions. For example "Laezel lunged her greatsword straight toward her foe, aiming for his neck" is much more fair and reasonable than "Laezel stabs her foe in the neck between his armor and helmet, fatally wounding him". Part of this is also not doing too many actions at once, and making sure the actions my character takes are reasonable and most importantly FUN for everyone involved. The goal is not to win every combat roleplay, it's to create fun and interesting stories and watch the characters develop even if that means they lose and/or meet their fateful end. ESPECIALLY when they lose that's when character's tend to grow the most, for better or worse.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: It ruins the fun of investigation and learning, its obviously cheating because the characters never acquired the detail themself, it can lead to unnatural disruptions like someone saying they're fighting in the middle of nowhere, and all of a sudden their allies who were originally halfway across the map suddenly show up to help, etc. It doesn't improve the roleplay experience at all.

Character Name: Autumn
Character Race: Human
Character Gender: Female
Character Age: 21
Physical Description: 5'5, lean (115 lbs), hazel eyes, dark messy brown hair, she wears a raggedy peasant's dress with an apron tied around her waist for pockets and a belt
Roleplay Scenario:

Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

Autumn stops and stares at the hag, clearly taken aback by this. "Me? Are you sure?" She checks her surroundings anxiously, but then her stomach rumbles and the sight of the swamps she had just treaded through for hours makes her shiver. "May as well," Autumn mutters. She brings herself toward the old woman and sits on the cushion. "There... Really isn't much to tell. I don't know... I just want to belong, somewhere, doing... I don't know. Something. Maybe helping people? I've never really been good at that." She looked at all the scratches and gashes on her arms from wandering through the swamp. "The only thing I am good at is finding food, and I can barely even do that. I don't have a purpose. I don't have anyone... I don't even know why I keep going." She sighs. "Fear, I guess. And maybe hope, that things will get better. That this isn't all for nothing. That's all there really is to me, ma'am. Just a girl who doesn't wanna die."

If Autumn is pressed further about her upbringing, where she came from, she would be very unlikely to answer unless artificially influenced or speaking with someone she trusts. She grew up in a very strict and oppressive, yet chaotic household. The human saw a lot of domestic violence between family members and got her fair share of beatings too for talking back or not keeping up with the workload on time. Her old hobbies and passions were conditioned out of her to make time for this workload too, the light in her eyes fading more and more with each year she's stayed. Alcoholism was something most of her relatives and both her parents took part in. She was never allowed to be anything more than just a chore-bearer and an emotional punching bag, but when she turned 17 Autumn finally snapped and ran away. 4 years have passed, and while she's learned a decent bit about surviving in the wilds, she lost most of her social skills and has a hard time trusting anyone. She's very lonely, but Autumn will always be happier than she ever was with her family. [I wouldn't infodump all of this in roleplay, this is just in case character origins are required to be put here]
