In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: You avoid powergaming by setting realistic limits for your character to follow under. A knight can swing a sword, but can not decapitate 30 men in one swing. A king can survive a stab wound, but will not live through 15 of them. A peasant can climb a fence, but can not jump over the castle walls.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Metagaming ruins the experience for both parties involved by giving one side an unfair advantage. It disrupts the flow of roleplay by giving one character knowledge they would not be able to have known without roleplay, and allows them to make preparations, or even powergame with the knowledge they have.

Character Name: Rorimack Orison
Character Race: Human
Character Gender: Male
Character Age: 35
Physical Description: The man stood about 5'9" with a lean build. His eyes were gray. His hair was cut short, left thick, and brushed out of his face.
Roleplay Scenario:

Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

The man would tilt his head and raise a brow as he gandered at the old hag. The thought of her offer rolled around in his head. Were she a witch she could cast a sinister curse, and torture his soul for an eternity, but the smell of sage and candles was far more pleasant than the air of this rotten bog-town. To hell with the foul stench.

"Sorry, Miss. I thought this was an angler's tent."  The man took off his boots and laid them nicely by the mouth of the tent. He'd sit himself cross legged upon the cushion. He'd scratch his 5'oclock shadow and take a deep inhale through his nose.

"Well now, there ain't much to say really. I grew up to a stern father and a gentile mother who taught me how to work. I did my chores fine until they died and left my brother with all of the inheritance. Me though- I was left with my father's sword. That was dandy until my brother sold the farm, and I needed to move." He'd clear his throat. "Now I don't know much about using a sword worth a fiddle- excuse the language miss-  I couldn't kill a crow with it much less a man; so it was real easy for a nasty gang of highwaymen to clobber me over the head, and take just about everything I had. They left me for dead."

He'd stretch his arm across his body, and an audible pop could be heard from his shoulder. "Oof- now, I survived that little ordeal and marched myself to whatever town I could find. Signed myself up as a trolley-man, and fished for a livin'. I ended up meeting myself a nice girl, a decent place to live, and a tavern I could drown what woes I had. Life couldn't be better 'til that lady broke my heart. Shattered it I tell you. She left town to go visit her mother, and was shot dead- through the heart- , by a mangy goblin."

The man sniffed sharply through his nose. "I had to leave that place. I packed what I could carry in my pockets, and left. I figured I'd try and find my brother, and see what he made of himself with father's money."

The man rolled his hand through his hair and pulled it back. "Which seems to have led me here."

He exhaled deeply through his nose. "Now... Is this the part where you put my soul in a doll and shake it for fun?"
