The slums are no place for a child, but yet, this is where Nikolai grew up. The poorly built houses that were such a common sight throughout the Kingdom of Renatus-Marna. His parents had little money growing up, meaning it was often up to Nikolai to find food for himself and his little brothers and sisters. Growing up the oldest of five, this made Nikolai very protective of his siblings. He began stealing food from vendors in Senntisten to feed them, sometimes leading to him getting captured and beating, but these beatings taught Nikolai how to fight and defend himself, as well as help him perfect the art of sleight of hand. But Nikolai, only steals when necessary, usually resorting to legal means to get things like food and clothing. He makes sure to keep his siblings from troubling, telling them the dangers of crime.

They duck into one of the shacks, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the small room, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town?" She begins, then pauses to study their face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a chair, “Where do you come from? What do you hope to make of yourself?”
