In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Using outside information (OOC) to influence the actions of your character (In Character)
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Influencing actions in character that make it to where your character becomes over powered. A short example would be giving your character new powers and abilities on the spot to make you stronger than the current threat ahead of you, leaving no challenge

Norray Fallen is much like any other Halfing that grows up Dunshire, he likes to party, prank, and have fun, and much like most Halflings he... tends to get sticky fingers every now and then, and for this, he’s got himself in trouble with the sheriff and found himself in a dungeon cell plenty of times, earning himself quite a reputation as a thief, forcing him to improve his skills. Norray has had sticky fingers even at the sweet young age of 20, it wasn’t a habit he always had, it was one taught and placed on him by his older siblings, who took to robbing drunken revelers and distracted audiences.
Norrays mother and father were fine with the thieving, but they weren’t fine with Norray and his constant need to prank random strangers, upon this he still had his urges to pickpocket and steal, eventually leading to him getting caught...

A travelling caravan from the Empire of Man by looks was making its way through the halfling village, now again, every halfling loves to mess around and do jokes and pranks, especially on newcomers... this group of travelers was the wrong group, as it turned out to be a Nobleman and his guardsmen, Norray had a bright idea of a bucket full of water dropping from a door on top of the traveler as they enter the tavern. This was perhaps a horrible idea at the time, especially when a infamously cruel nobleman was the one hit with the prank, and.. subsequently knocked unconscious by the bucket. The Guards of the Nobleman were furious and out for blood, arresting some of the tavern workers along with a few bystanders who busted into laughter at the prank. Norray had noticed what he had done the moment the nobleman touched that door handle and went to hide in a neighboring burrow so he could watch... he knew nothing good was about to happen, but.. he couldn't help but laugh at what was about to happen too.

After the dust settled five halflings were arrested, Norray was brought forth afterwords by the Sheriff, one last time to the village elders. Norray tried hard and pleaded with them, apologizing.. he didn't want it to turn this way, it just did. The others knew this wasn't going to end well, they wanted to stay out of all these politics, and they didn't want another one of theirs locked away or worse.. dead, so they made a bargain with Norray saying: "The Noble family is going to be after you now Norray,  Dunshire is peaceful for a reason and some of the Tavern workers ratted you out in fear of their own life. In best interest for the town, the thing for you to do is run.. run away and avoid getting caught. Also Norray... please don't ever come back. If you have any care for yourself or your family, don’t you ever come back here."

Broken.. and now exiled, Norray jumped from being a fun loving prankster, to a vagabond and common thief. He joined with a bandit group far, far away from the Cloud Temple, learning quick about their way of life, many of the bandits reminding him of the stories of Assassins and brigands that his family used to tell him about when he was little, never did he think he was actually going to use a weapon... this was damaging his morals and his ideas of living peacefully.. no longer could he be as upbeat and fun as he’d used to be, now.. he was forced to learn quick on how to use a blade, how to survive, how to kill without thinking. Norray eventually found a good time to slip away from the bandits, knowing the group was getting to much attention and would be hunted soon by the Empire of Man, the last caravan raid was way to risky. Eventually, Norray left the bandits behind, and he tried to escape the lifestyle he was forced into by slipping onto a ship traveling to the new lands of Arcas... hopefully being able to start anew.

"Oh, I just, uh…" The traveler stutters, tensing up. They eye the crone, then back outside the shack. For a moment, the air thickens with anticipation, until…

Overall, a very good start. Your definitions are clear- but also consider that powergaming can be as simple as forcing an emote, as opposed to attempting one. This will be highly relevent when playing a villian character. Any attempts to steal or to prank will have to be those- attempts.

To set an example Norray dipped his hand into the womans pocket, and stole five mina would become Norray attempted to reach into the womans pocket, in a bid to steal a few coin.

  • Despite the story you wrote for introductions, you have yet to mention any lore of the world. You’re asked to include at least two details of lore however, I’d ask you use a few more given the length of the story you wrote.

Here’s a few references:

[Halflings]

[Arcas] – Current Lands

[Atlas] – The Previous Land.

  • Something else to keep in mind, is that as a halfling, their max height is 3ft, so for one of his race, Norray is quite tall.
  • Finally, your interesting facts are supposed to display a good, a neutral, and a bad.
    • Psychotic Prankster.
    • Loyal only to friends, not ideals.
    • Turns tail when things look bad.
  • Turn tail is clearly a negative, and quite a good one however, I don’t really see being a prankster as a positive. All I’d ask, is that you brainstorm something a little more positive about the character.

Please, make your changes in your own time! Any questions, feel free to PM me on the forums or on discord, Laurelin#0797

A good attempt at trying to find relevent lore, however, let me guide you there.

  • Willow Hollow existed in Vailor – a few hundred years ago or so, and so it is very outdated.
    • Depending on the timescale of your story, Dunshire was the settlement in the previous map, which existed 8 years ago at a minimum, or Brandybrook is the current existing settlement, I believe.
  • The Holy Oren Empire is also usually referred to as the Empire of Man, nowadays.

Otherwise, he is beginning to read much more like a Halfling, and I know that the lore canbe quite confusing. Your best bet is to use the Halfling wiki page for character design, and the Arcas/Atlas pages for references on locations and world history as those are the two most recent.

Take 2 on the edit. Thank you for helping so far.

You’ve shown willingness and interest to learn the lore- as difficult as it is. No doubt Norray will undergo some changes as you begin roleplaying on the server, and no doubt you’ll discover tidbits of history here and there.

As a footnote, remember to keep an eye on the rules for banditry, if that is what you plan to do. Villian rules and powergaming come greatly into play, when that type of rp is undertaken. The threads for various rulesets can be found [Here]

You’re already in the newplayer discord, so feel free to shoot any PMs our way – you can find community team members in game with the bright pink [CT] tag.
