You’ve just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As you look around, your gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. You duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? she begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

Example:
Sythion lowered himself into a dusty cushion riddled with holes - to the outside viewer, his fine clothing and fair face should make a jarring contrast with the humble surroundings. Somehow, however, he didn't seem uncomfortable.
Lifting his chin, he smiled. "Well.. Perhaps there's another way we can do this.."
After a brief awkward pause, he continued. "Well. If it's ABSOLUTELY necessary..."
Drawing from his pouch a small leather-bound book, he handed the woman a few pages which seemed to have nearly fell out.
"Read."
Entry 1
XX/XX/XXXX (Age 13)
They're coming closer. My leg is nearly done for and I don't know how long I can keep my scent undetected and hunt at the same time.
My papa told me to run. I was right to listen, wasn't I? Now I don't know where I am, or where to go next. I'm sure I'll figure something out.
Sythion smiled and paused, hearing a sharp rustle outside.
Shooting to his feet, he raced to the window to observe his tracker.
Unfortunately however, it seemed as though they were long gone...
Turning back, his already hesitant nature turned to exasperation.
"It seems the book will have to do, my words may come later."
With a grin, he launched himself out the open window, never to be seen again.

Backstory:
Sythion grew up in a far off land, with a healthy family. At a young age, his village was subjected to a vicious series of bandit attacks. But that wasn't the worst part. In their following fear, something dark overtook his village - afterwards people were the same any more.
A frenzy took over. Idol worshiping deepened until the sacrifices escalated to a human level.
His family were one of the few to retain their sanity, and eventually, at the peak of danger, he was forced to escape alone, carrying only the most valuable asset of the village (a well made steel sword with a history).
Living off the hunt and foraging for months after this, he eventually found his way to larger civilization where he found he had a knack for guard work. Starting as a common grunt, with no home and no family, he gradually developed his body and skill in order to build his proficiency at arms to a moderate level.
