Hanja was born south of the city of Markav in a minor hamlet lining the Czena River to a militia captain also named Hanja and a housewife named Maria, both refugees from the Greyspine Rebellion. His mother died whilst giving birth to the child, and his father came to resent Hanja for this despite it not being his fault. Though his father hated him, he let him stay in their village as his father was not cruel enough to abandon an infant, and he had a reputation to uphold within his family as he was the first line of defense for the village. Because he was the only heir to his father in terms of captain-ship, Hanja started receiving sword training at an early age, although due to their lack of resources they frequently trained with actual metal swords. Because of this, Hanja received plenty of minor cuts but it paid off, as he was gaining strength and skill immensely from the weight of the swords. Hanja was previously content with his life of training and serf work, although he couldn't shake the feeling that his mother would have wanted him to do something more than his life than be stuck in a hovel-city until he dies, either from a bandit raid or old age. When his father abruptly died due to a heart attack and Hanja was left at the helm at age 21, he couldn't bear the decisions to make and as such, ran off into the world by himself, leaving all of his previous ties behind, all except for his blood-ties. Hanja had heard about his cousins and other distant relatives that have assimilated themselves into the Heartlanders, and as such, has set off towards their lands whilst working odd jobs as a mercenary or even as a serf once more to gain money.
