Jarold Nilsen was born to Derik and Lilith Nilsen. His family lived as peasants on a small farm near Renatus. Jarold was their only child and they expected him to take over the family farm when they grew old. Although his mother and father raised him to be a farmer, Jarold was lazy, naive, and unhappy with the farm. Instead of listening to his father and doing as he asked Jarold rebelled and made fun of his fathers practices. . Late one night around a month after Jarold turned 18, he released all of his fathers cows and chickens in the middle of the night to spite his father, but in that short amount of time outside of their cages many of his cattle and chickens were killed and even more ran away. This was the last straw for Derik and Lilith and they kicked him from the farm telling him to “never come back”. Jarold was on his way to Renatus when he met a group of mercenaries heading east who kidnapped him turning him into their fool. The mercenaries all treated him poorly and beat him after he told jokes or spoke without permission. On the way east he overheard that they were going to Adria seeking contract work. Late one night Jarold found that most of the mercenaries had went into the city leaving only two drunken guards behind to watch over their camp. Jarold easily escaped into the night where his new journey began.
