In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: The easiest way that I ensure I avoid powergaming, is by playing to lose. Not necessarily having my character tragically suffer in any instance of conflict, or be outright incapable of anything, moreso that I don't expect my character to lack any flaws and win every battle. I will let my roleplay flow with whatever story is going on, and not break away from what my character would do in a situation to avoid them appearing in a negative or weakened light. For example, if my character was approached by a threat and had to resort to hand-to-hand combat, I would roleplay it in a way where my character had a lot of room for error, because I've decided beforehand that she is not good at hand-to-hand combat. (Rather than having her swiftly knock the threat out with a fist punch and immediately blocking all attacks) Meanwhile if it were a skill my character was good at, such as running, I would roleplay that she could run quickly when in the face of danger. If I were to powergame, my action would likely look something like "She dodges the attack effortlessly, and within two seconds she is out of sight." which would not make any sense.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: When players use outside knowledge to their advantage that wouldn't be obvious to their character it breaks immersion and gives them unfair advantages ic, especially over other's who don't metagame. It's harmful to narrative progression as well, and causes issues and frustration among other players. You can't metagame fairly, because by making character decisions and giving your character knowledge that derives from outside information, you directly harm the story of other characters, especially if this metagamed information is passed on and integrated into storylines unknowingly. Someone metagaming a military strategy for example, has an unfair advantage, as their character somehow knows and in addition relays information that only the player knew ooc. It's unfair to everyone involved, especially when resulting in a void and therefore wasted time.

Roleplay Scenario:

You’ve just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As you look around, your gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. You duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? she begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

"Well..." hesitantly, she sits on the cushion. She eyes the figure before crossing her arms, letting out a hard swallow as the room grows silent.

She lowers her eyes, and a reluctant smile dawns her face. "It's not exactly an interesting one." her eyes wander in no particular direction.

"I was raised by my mother. She is--" she sutters, "--was a farmer. It was a simple life, before she passed on to the second sky." She now crossed her arms, the air thickened and a slim breeze swept through the candles, their lights slightly flickering at the disturbance.  "We lived in the Heartlands."

"Since than I've been travelling to find work..I have recently come to reside in Haense." She stood up, and swept her dress skirt, the floorboards creaked in reaction to her sudden movement, and her face --once illuminated in candlelight-- was now shielded in darkness. "That is all." her gaze lowered back down to the figure. "If you must call it one, a story, then it is a story that lacks any interest."
