In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: I avoid powergaming by letting my character grow and make mistakes like anyone would. I don’t control other players actions or try to force outcomes. I focus on playing realistically and making the story fun for everyone, not just trying to win or be op.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Metagaming disrupts fair roleplay because it gives a player an unfair advantage by using information their character wouldn’t actually know. It breaks immersion and can ruin the story for others, since actions aren’t based on what happens in-game but on outside knowledge. Fair roleplay works best when everyone reacts realistically to what their character experiences, not what they know from off-screen.

Roleplay Scenario:

Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

My character steps into the tent, wrinkling their nose at the sharp smell of melted wax and damp cloth. The flickering candles cast shaky shadows across the worn cushions, and for a moment, they pause to take it all in. At the back, the old hag lifts her head, squinting as if trying to read their thoughts. My character swallows and moves forward, lowering themselves onto the cushion, hands clasped loosely in their lap. “I… I’ve been traveling for a long time,” they say, voice quiet and uneven, “looking for answers. I don’t really know what I’m meant to do, but I was told you might help me figure it out.” They glance around again, letting the soft candlelight warm their shoulders, before meeting the hag’s gaze and waiting.
