At age 8 Matthew and his friends got lost on a trail through a forest, a murderer jumped out at him and his friends then trapped them in nets and threw them into a spider pit. Matthew escaped the net and out of fear, ran away leaving his friends behind. When he returned to the village he pleaded for help, but everyone knew by now it was too late. Matthew was then shunned from his village and was to never return to it. He then lived alone until age 18 when he took a boat to Haense, where his new story starts off.
