    How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: Metagaming is using outside game knowledge to influence the in game which your character wouldn't have known of. EX: Having people tell you through discord things that are happening in places that my normal means you would never be able to get knowldge of.
    How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: Power gaming is basically making your character do unrealistic things like having a beginner defeat a veteran. Example would be making your character instantly kill someone who is stronger than you or at your level.

I respond with one word wealth, for I want to keep conversation with strangers to a minimum until I figure out what their character is like. I would respond this way because usually people come to big cities for wealth, so I'd be hiding my true intentions while slowly figuring out what this person wants from me or if he is trying to exploit me because I'm new.
