    In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Powergaming is like when you take a power nap. It's short but a lot is achieved.

Likes to make cheese out of cat fur. Uses a scythe to murder her prey. She grew up on a farm with a giant caterpillar until one day she was roaming the forest. She enjoyed to lick trees. They tasted wondeful! Just glorious! However, she met a man one day. He was tall and hairy. He was also very, very large. Fat. He only wore a pink g-string and fairy wings. Atop his head he wore a glamours crown. He walked up to her and told her his name. It was Caitlin. They became best friends until one day, Caitlin fell into a hole. She was too weak to pull him free because he was the weight of a thousand burning suns. He lay there, until he passed. He entered the next life and left her here on Earth. Years go by, she hasn't visited the hole where her friend left her. One day, she walks the forest. Alone. She passes the hole and remembers the fat fairy whom she'd befriended all those years ago. She looks into the hole and there lay bright pink fairy wings and an XXXXL G-string

Roleplay Scenario: The traveller has just arrived in a small town. As they look around, their gaze is met with run down houses and shops. They duck into one of the shacks, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the small room, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town?" She begins, then pauses to study their face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a chair, “Where do you come from? What do you hope to make of yourself?”

Elves go insane after about 1000 years of age, and for new players we recommend starting out around 50-100 years in order to develop your character appropriately. This makes it easier for your character to fit into the world and doesn't know things about the previous maps that you yourself don't know.
