It often involves doing unrealistic things, automatically succeeding at difficult actions, or controlling another character's actions.

For example, instead of roleplaying:

"I swing my fist toward him."

A powergamer might say:

"I punch him in the face and knock him unconscious."

The second example removes the other player's ability to react, dodge, block, or determine how their character is affected.

Powergaming should be avoided because it makes roleplay unfair, ruins immersion, and takes away player agency. Good roleplay is collaborative storytelling where everyone has a chance to contribute to the outcome. Avoiding powergaming helps keep interactions realistic, enjoyable, and respectful for everyone involved.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Metagaming is when a player uses information that their character would not realistically know in the roleplay. This information usually comes from out-of-character sources, such as voice chats, streams, Discord messages, or game mechanics.

For example, if someone tells you on Discord where another player is hiding, and your character immediately goes there despite having no in-character way of knowing, that would be metagaming.

Metagaming should be avoided because it creates an unfair advantage, breaks immersion, and can ruin the roleplay experience for others. Roleplay works best when characters act only on information they have learned naturally within the game world. Keeping in-character knowledge separate from out-of-character knowledge helps ensure fair, realistic, and enjoyable roleplay for everyone.
