Our boy Dion grew up as the bastard child of two young parents. His papa was Louis Grapcho, a refined sheep salesman; and his mama was Carlotta DeCoco, a traveling gypsy. Louis was impressed by Carlotta's bells and they hit it off pretty swell. Louis was so entranced that he sold all of sheep for a very cheap price so that he could follow Carlotta. Carlotta's older brother, Dominick DeCoco, was also traveling with them. He played a variety of instruments while Carlotta performed her show.
A few months into their relationship, Louis got Carlotta pregnant. They both knew that gypsy shows weren't going to provide enough money to raise a child, so they used up all their gold to purchase a small farm. Dion was born shortly after. Dominick stayed with the three of them for two years, financially supporting them with money he made playing at nearby taverns and inns. Louis grew to dislike Dominick very much because of some of his shenanigans, most involving unmarried (but occasionally wed) women. Was this because he himself accidentally made a baby with Carlotta and somehow Dominick is lucky enough to go off Scott-free?
Perhaps. Anyhow. Louis forced Dominick to leave.
Dion grew up knowing that he was a bastard and unwanted. His father made him work around the farm and hardly ever let him go into town. His mother didn't pay much attention to him, and was mainly submissive to Louis, even though when she was originally pretty whimsical and fun as a gypsy. Dion did as he was told and never complained about it. When Dion as 14, Uncle Dominick returned to the farm. After a talk about being able to explore the world and have new experiences, Dion left home without saying goodbye to his mother or father with his Uncle.
On the road, Uncle Dominick taught Dion how to play a number of instruments; the most influential being the lute. Dion carries his lute wherever he goes to be able to play music on the road and for others. At some point when Dion was 17, his Uncle vanished. He isn't sure if he's dead or alive, but after a few years of being on the road with his carefree father figure, he has just decided to move on.
