Alula was born in Sutica. At age three, she was adopted by Syndra and Ameria Velet (her biological parents are unknown to her). Ameria was born in the Realm of Elveness but travelled all around the world to make her fortune as a trader, specializing in paper, inks, pens, and art supplies. During one of her voyages she met Syndra, a native to Sutica who worked as a scribe for the Minister of Seals and Stationaries. The two met while negotiating for a large shipment of custom stationaries to print official decrees on, and the sparks flew near-instantly. Ameria continuously made excuses to come back to Sutica for trading, until Syndra proposed and the two bought a house together. After a decade of wedded bliss, the couple happened upon a baby nestled inside half of a large cask floating in the harbor. Syndra and Ameria searched the harbor for weeks, trying to find the child's parent's. However, it soon became apparant that the search would ultimately be fruitless, and the couple decided to raise the dark elf as their own.
Ameria and Syndra named their newfound daughter Alula, after the very bright stars in the sky on the night they found her. As she grew, Syndra did her best to impart her love of the written word on the young child, who soon came to voraciously devour any writing she could come across. This came to be very useful to the young Alula, as an encounter with a particularly nasty case of influenza left her bedridden for much of her childhood. Many of the nights where she was kept awake by fever were spent staring up at the night sky through her bedroom window, which fueled a fascination with the stars and the sky in general. After recovering from the flu, Alula tried to share her newfound passions with her peers, but was met only with fear. The strange circumstances of her birth (or rather, discovery) had already caused more superstitious types to regard the child with suspicion. When a particularly nasty flu began to spread through the community, some took it as a sign of her accursed nature as something that might corrupt others and spread to them, blaming her for the outbreak. Despite her desire for socialization and adventure, Alula was unable to find a kindred spirit outside of ink and paper, causing her to build a second home for herself within the pages of her ever growing collection of books. This isolation eventually led her to make a drastic decision: inspired by the protagonist of her favorite novel, she decided to leave her home. After reading about a particularly beautiful constellation that can be viewed from Talon's Port, she decided that she would travel there to get a fresh start and hopefully make some new friends... or at the very least, to have a new night sky to chart.
