Hey #LOTC,
Sorry we haven't been keeping the community up to date with the recent downtimes on LOTC. The truth of the matter is someone with very malicious intent has decided to begin DDOSing us on a regular interval every day starting around 3:00pm and continuing on long past midnight.
Unfortunetly these DDOS attacks have been so much larger than any past attack we've had to deal with that it has been impossible for me to do anything about them through software and firewall modifications. The only true solution to stop the DDOSing from happening is through a anti-ddos hardware, which costs upwards of $50k to purchase.
That being said, such hardware can be rented out from certain companies for slightly more reasonable prices, ranging from $200-$4000/month, depending on the mitigation strength. It pisses me off that these DDOSers have pushed us into a corner where we need to waste the already very scarce donations we get on anti-ddos hardware, but there's not much we can do at this point.
The attacks are so large that if our datacenter didn't nullroute our IP, it would take out a large portion of their network. We're still actively working to try and combat the DDOS threat, but things aren't looking too good right now as I'm basically locked out of the server 24/7.
If we can't figure out a solution in the next few hours, we'll likely post up a kickstarter donation fund for the community to donate $ in order to allow us to purchase the anti-ddos hardware we need to stop the attacks. Normally we would just take $ from the server fund, but it's run dry as of late.
Thanks, and sorry for the long delayed post.
