  1. 'The Savoyard' silently reads the proclamation as he sits atop his favorite stump in the woods north of Nordengrad. As his gaze drifts up from the paper his wandering eyes fixate upon the beginning of what appears to be the new barony. The man rises from his stump in order to get a better view, but still sees little.

Should I satisfy my curiosity? I've wound up in plenty of trouble because of it. He mulls over the choice, but before he can come to an answer he finds himself meandering towards the construction. The sound of workers chipping amongst each other, women and children laughing as they play in the wood, and the thud of the hammers and scrape of the stones fill his ears before the thick brush of the wood give way to the cleared land where the construction of Herz is underway.

    Welcome, neighbors.

Describe your knowledge on the descendant races

Humans - The race most commonly found in both Atlas and the Application Section. Because of their curse, a lifespan shortened to 150 years on average, humans strive to make the most out of their numbered years. The Canonist Faith and The Red Faith are the two dominant religions among humans. The descendants of Horen are perhaps the most influential race due to their high population. Humans usually stand anywhere from 4 feet to 6”4 feet, and weigh in at 100-250 lbs. They have a variety of cultures due to their suffusion over Atlas.

Elves - Descendants of Malin standing from 5 feet to 7 feet. Their pointed ears, thinner frames, and wildly varying complexion (depending on subrace), are some of their most notable features. In a strange reverse of the humans, the elves were cursed with poor fertility and blessed with long lives. Elves can live to their 1000s, however as they are affected by illness, injury, accident, and many other form of harm they do not often reach this age. Elves mature within two decades, but are not considered adults until a half-century to a full century. Their long lives often lead to wisdom through centuries of experience and many years to pursue knowledge.

Dwarves - Dwarves are the descendants of Urugan. Shorter, broad, and possessing some sweet beards, the various clans of dwarves live all around Atlas. Many reside in grand underground settlements as well as other general engineering marvels, a sign of their craftiness and innovation. Dwarves are afflicted by the curse of greed, but as strong, dedicated people they still stand as a powerful race. The dwarves are the only race that has been able to resist Orenian expansion, their creativity and knack for engineering playing a large part in their efforts. The dwarves are militaristic and entrepreneurial in nature, something benefitted by their diligence and determination.

Orcs - The children of Krug are the most physically impressive specimens out of all the descendant races. Strong, agile, and stalwart warriors make up a large portion of the orcish race. Three distinct subraces make up the orcs, each of which share similar features yet can vary wildly. Uruks, the most common of the orcs, stand tall at 6 to 8 feet, and brim with muscle. They are on par with humans in regards to intelligence, though are more straightforward. Ologs, or ogres, are the largest of the orcish subraces, standing at 10 to 12 feet. They are mighty, yet horribly unintelligent beasts. The final subrace, the goblins, are much smaller than their uruk and olog counterparts but still stand about as tall as the average human. They are intelligent, crafty, lithe, and athletic. Orcs favor harsh, arid environments in order to ward off those not strong enough.

Describe your knowledge on other pieces of lore that you believe to be relevant

I have a decent amount of knowledge of creatures and undead, but as I haven’t used it recently it’s something that I would have to refresh myself on. Anything extra that would be required of me to know I would work to learn within a few days. I know a good deal about doctoring, medicinal practices, some alchemy, and herbology. Currents events, while seemingly obvious, is often overlooked in regards to what can be useful for a new player to know.

Detail what drives you to become a member of the application team

We have all been new players on LoTC and possibly other RP servers at one time or another. The first few days are filled with finding a nation, finding a job, establishing your character, and reading so much lore that your head hurts. Every new player goes through this initial stage, and it is perhaps the most critical in regards to new player retention and how ingrained they become in the community. When they have a question on what to read, where to go, or what is going on, the first people they’ll often look to are the pink tags that checked and accepted their application.

I want to be an individual who can provide the assistance they require on both the forums and the server. I already try to do this the best I can, and being able to help with new-player applications and retention is something I will do well and eagerly. I enjoy being a friendly face and a guiding figure.

Provide an alternate way to assisting new players apart from reviewing applications

Leading these new players to active nations that would suit their character and interests well, and giving them information on the various nations and communities around the server is extremely important. Directing them to a group that would take them in and interact with them in a meaningful way would benefit the nation and new player as well as improve their respective experiences. Filling them in and recommending them to experts on certain bits of lore could also help pique their interest in some of the lesser-known parts of LoTC. Getting a new player to explore what LoTC has to offer and learn through means other than the Wiki is critical to their overall improvement and experience.

Survey the application process and provide any possible improvements which could be made

I believe that the period directly after the accepting of an application is overlooked. Whether a player decides to continue to spend their time on LoTC is often decided here. Helping these players ground themselves in the server is important, but often I see them dropped into LoTC only to either be swarmed by recruiters or ignored entirely. This is disheartening, but something that I think is easily fixable. Having an AT on standby to assist new players, or even encouraging ATs to assist players whose apps they've recently accepted, would help fix the issue.

I also believe that applications themselves need to be evaluated less by a checklist and more by the quality and effort a person is willing to put in. Checklists only require a cursory reading of a bit of lore (if even that) and refraining from making your character extremely unrealistic. Instructing players on how and why they should make a quality app before they're accepted onto the server should improve their RP and overall interactions.

Provide any additional information that you believe is needed

My hours fluctuate during the week, but from about 4pm CST - 9pm CST is when I'm most active on the server. From 4pm - 12am, 7am - 8am, 10 am - 12 pm, and 1 pm - 3pm is usually when I can be most active on the forums and Discord.

    Tell a joke

Two priests and an atheist are hunting in the forest. The atheist aims at a rabbit, misses his shot, and says “God damn it, I missed.” The first priest says “the Lord will strike you down for using his name in vain.” Later, the atheist aims at a deer, misses his shot, and says “God damn it, I missed.” The second priest says “the Lord will strike you down for using his name in vain.” Later, the atheist aims at a bear, misses his shot, and says “God damn it, I missed.” Just then, a shot of lightning strikes the priests, killing them instantly, and a booming voice from the sky says “God damn it, I missed.”

  3. Easiest +1 I've ever given. A great guy, hard worker, and someone who can really help out with all aspects of the GM team. As his former supervisor on the RP server he mentioned, Keening was one of the best guys on my team and I can still recall several events where his solid thinking, level head, and dedication provided a great help to the rest of the team.

Also he really wants dark magic so please give it or he might try to dismantle the community

  4. The local Canonist shrugs his shoulder upon reading the announcement. Gazing to the Ash Tree in the center of Nordengrad he gives a small sigh, returning his focus to the book in his heads. However he still struggles to concentrate, instead thinking of his future within the Earldom. "At least Rae is a friend," he reassures himself, biting the interior of he cheek.

  5. Colony Name: Jamestown

    Nation of Origin: England

Religion (Catholic, Protestant, or Orthodox): Protestant (Anglican Church)

Colony History: The defeat of the Spanish Armada cemented England's place as the supreme naval power in not just Europe, but possibly the entire world. Ser Walter Raleigh's failed colony in Roanoke deterred further attempts at colonization for a time, but in 1600 the young John Smith was granted a charter in the land known as Virginia. Seeking gold, many of those who wished to find their fortune boarded the ships bound for this new colony. However, with the experience of a controller who learned about this in 5th grade Social Studies, the Captain Smith has taken with him several families who will dedicate themselves to farming and providing food for the colony.

Starting Location: (fill in a square & PM to either mod) Will get it to you, but it's literally Jamestown.

    The Bored King

Are they going to attack, or not? King Haakon asked himself, drumming his fingers atop the hilt of his blade for the tenth minute straight. I guess I will have to take the fight to them.

    The Exile

It had been two years, but finally the small families and loyal individuals who had followed Jarl Eric Gormsson were at sea. The journey to the north had claimed the lives of many, namely the Fiscere family, but at last the boats were out and away. New land for those truly loyal to King Haakon, yes. A place to be free from the war, the traitors, and the usurpers who had forced Eric from his home in the first place.

The cold spray of the ocean occasionally drizzled upon Eric’s face, but he minded it little. It was freedom from the killers back in Norway, and the war they were fighting with the Swedes and Danes. Jarl Eric looked back out to the wide expanse in front of him. Home.

    The Proven Brother

That is how it’s done. Now I just need more of them. Jarl Halfdan thought, smiling to himself as he read the report of the Battle of Ruthin. Now time to go north.

A token defense at Copenhagen, that was it. I had trust in Cheif Hrutsson, but even a capable commander cannot do well with the poorest of troops. King Haakon Haraldsson, sitting inside the large commander tent, looked over a map of southern Scandinavia. The other chiefs and jarls were off drilling their troops, frequenting the local tavern, or saying goodbye to their own families. War had been declared months ago, and now the Norwegian army sat at the doorstep of the Swedish Kingdom. Moving at a quick pace was the easy part, for the men all knew the land as if it were the back of their hand. However, moving into enemy territory was a far more daunting task. Traps lay around every tree, wells would be left poisoned, and food would be scarcer than normal.

Haakon had received word that the Swedish-Danish army had finished an assault on Copenhagan, the very city he has taken just years earlier. Perhaps he should have defended it, for his honor and pride, but in truth the vast lands of Sweden were a more enticing prize. The blood in his veins began flowing properly, just thinking that thought over in his mind. Save the petty raiding for the chiefs with nothing to gain but gold. The forging of my empire will be worth the cost in both treasure and gold, for the name of myself, my family, and my people will be cemented in history forever. Of course, there was still a long war to be fought. Haakon’s invasion, though at an odd time of year, was planned to be quick and decisive. By the year’s end, the Norwegian army would be wintering in Stockholm.

The King craned his head to better see the field outside. The winter’s snow had not yet come, but the autumn winds were beginning to nip at his now-reddened cheeks. Through the thin crack of the curtain flaps leading in to the tent, Haakon caught a glimpse of the army outside. Hundreds of lay scattered about, the fur pelts of the standards in between each of them. Thousands had joined his cause so far, but he knew that the numbers of the Danes and Swedes were greater. Though even outnumbered, the Norwegians were not without allies.

    Summary

    • King Haakon raises one unit of berserkers (1,000), one unit of medium infantry (1,000), and two units of archers (2,000). [12 AP]

    • 6/20 Research points in Heavy Infantry now.

    • The alliance between the Kingdom of the Norwegians and the Tribe of the Saxons is made official.

    • The English Coalition (Actual name to come later) Pact is signed by High Jarl Halfdan.

The Anushiriwan would strut idly along the open balcony of his palace, overlooking the main city of Susa, pensive in thought. Serious trouble had not come to the Empire in hundreds of years - but there was a general unease bubbling under the surface, in all theatres of society. Ennui plagued the nation for the preceding years, life came, and life went with little to no upsets, for both good and bad.

This would not do, for the Shahanshah - something must be done, and so it would be decreed. Priests, Scribes, Satraps, Generals - a Great conclave would be called to present ideas to the King of Kings as to the ailments of his nation, and possible solutions to them.

    Imperial Actions

Revitalization of Faith (1 AP) (Mod)

In an effort to entrench the Zoroastrian faith within the populace of the Empire, a massive effort is set to be prepared; a mass scribing of the Avesta and other tomes, so that every town, in every district, in every satrap of the Empire may have a copy of not only the Avesta, but the Torah, the Bhagavad Gita, and a host of other scriptures, from Zunist faiths to Tengriic. Specifically absent however, is the Quran and the Bible.

The Postage Act (1 AP) (Mod)

Noting the disconnect that the citizens, bureaucrats and general peoples of the Empire were having, the Imperial Domestic Council have announced a system by which the centuries old postal system could be revitalized. New post stations are slated to be constructed over the next five or so years at pre-calculated distances across the Empire, to ensure speedy and standard delivery of information in all directions.

For nearly a thousand years, the Persians had ruled over the lands of Iran and Mesopotamia, and seen dozens, if not hundreds of other peoples, tribes, kingdoms and even Empires rise and fall. The Archives and Libraries of Babylon, Susa, Cstesiphon and Nineveh held the knowledge and entire recorded history of the men of the west, dating back to Sumer and Lagash, and the direct heritage of the country’s people could be traced back to the very same.

Although the Empire had reclined in some ways - Judea was no longer held, nor Egypt or Lydia, the Heartland was still strong and safe - and the most wealthy of lands in perhaps the whole world. A thousand years of internal peace, development and cultural inflow and outflow had made the Persian people the most well fed, the most literate, and most capable of all peoples - According to the Persians, at any rate.

Anushuriwan II, dressed in the Imperial comforts would stand at the foot of a behemoth structure, easily some twenty floors tall, of gold, sandstone, and polished blue lazuli - the Imperial Library of Darius, built in the 2nd century BC. Having been long expanded by rulers after, Anushuriwan would be thinking of leaving his own mark upon the edifice - and his city, as a whole.

    Imperial Actions

Construction would soon begin, with labourers and craftsmen starting the long process of gathering the materials and logistics to expand.

    The First of the Vikings

    See the source image

Another throne broken, as if I needed another reason to venture outside, King Haakon Haraldsson whined, drumming his fingers atop the hilt of his blade. The hall he stood in was cold, empty, and devoid of light, just the comforts he wanted on a winter’s evening. The King looked back to the splintered chair behind him, shaking his head as he trudged over to his former seat. Better to take your gifts than accept them. Nobody poisons the wine they intend to drink. His large head craned to the rows of windows behind him, watching the snow from outside slowly drifting in. The fisherman should be back to shore by now, as should the woodcutters. Even that thought alone bored him more than the council he had to hold on occasion. He won the loyalty of the petty kingdoms and tribes through destroying them in the field of battle, not listening to their petty qualms and talks of weather patterns.

An empty chest sat against the wall opposite of the King, a large hide shield beside it. Haakon strode over to the chest, running his hands over the gold and polish that had made this foreign beauty. Unfortunately, the treasure he had won had long been spent in an effort to bribe the loyalty of a few stubborn tribes. I’ve grown as soft as those I once slaughtered and plundered. It had only been a year since he had last led a raid, but unification of Norway had cut his time and patience to ribbons.

Suddenly came a knock at the door. Without waiting for a response, a short, dark-haired man walked in. He wore a brown cloak, but the hints of armor underneath were clear to the Viking’s keen eyes. Haakon couldn’t recognize him but for the axe and shield at his side. The King raised his brows at the man, his own hand inching closer towards the sword at his side. The intruder began coughing violently, reaching a hand into his cloak and procuring a small flask. Taking a long swig, the newcomer drooped his torso over and began panting heavily. After a good minute of heavy breathing the man’s head swiveled up, his blue eyes meeting those of the King.

“Call the jarls, this is a council you will want to convoke.”

It had only been a month since the murder of his cousin, but Jarl Eric Gormsson could not pull the knife from his back. Even calling himself jarl felt like a betrayal, as to hide the truth from his own mind would only weaken him. Not as if he could stave off as much as a bandit attack now, for only a few dozen families still recognized him as their liege. They were far braver than he, choosing to follow him up the dangerous coast, to land where rebuilding could begin. The cold wind bit at his exposed skin as he plodded through sand and snow. The women and children feared for his health, but Jarl Eric had forsaken any spare clothing as to give it to those even weaker than him. It was painful, but penance for his cowardice in the face of death.

Perhaps Forseti would look upon him favorably after his atonement was over.

    A Stranded Brother

Word came from the homeland infrequently, if at all. Halfdan Haraldsson tapped his foot impatiently as he sat atop a large stone throne. It was beautiful, but the greatest discomfort he had ever known, bar whenever he was out at sea. The ceiling and front wall of the keep, not yet complete, allowed him a view of the beauty of the Welsh landscape. Rolling hills all around, mountains further away, forests covering what had not been cleared, Halfdan was content to sit here for months, hopefully years. The evening air nipped at him, but he enjoyed the cloudy weather that covered the setting sun. At least it wasn’t snowing, and fires would start to appear around the town soon, another sight Halfdan enjoyed.

Halfdan was far less physically imposing than the rest of his brothers, cousins even. He was short in stature, and thinner in frame. He hated the ocean, except to look upon it, and was no warrior at heart. To be fair, he was only chosen to advise the old Jarl Olaf, for he would have made a poor hostage. However, he was sharp of mind, and when Jarl Olaf laid on his deathbed from a fever his final command was to proclaim Halfdan as his successor. The ships had not even reached shore yet, but Halfdan found himself commanding grizzled veterans, bloodthirsty young men, wives complaining something or another, and children that poked at his leg and gazed up at him wide-eyed. Because he had earned no prestige in battle, many of the warriors and commonfolk within the fleet seemed wary of Halfdan’s rule. Though he had no treasure of wars, the King’s brother did have a silver tongue, and talk of a change in leadership died before it had truly began. Even then, it was a relief when the expedition had reached shore, where they were greeted by the invasion fleet that had taken a good part of the mainland before them.

Now in command of thousands of soldiers and commonfolk, alongside his own council, Halfdan set to work trying to find out what King Haakon’s intentions were. The jarls and chieftains who sat on the council called for expansion, capitalizing on the gains that many of them had made not long before. However, despite his lack of information regarding the local kingdoms, Halfdan figured they would not take another invasion as lightly as they had before. If his brother was too busy to send orders then Halfdan was under no obligation to follow presumed wishes. He would play his game, the one he knew he could win.

  14. "Quite a kind gesture, granting my family and I a barony. Rather odd that they would do this now, though, given how we are currently at war. Nonetheless, free land and titles remain naught but free land and titles," Andren would mull, sitting comfortably on a wooden stump. Suddenly, realization would dawn on him as his eyes wandered to the signatures on the paper. "Julia's ****! They don't mean to give it to me. They intend to give it to my bastard brother... who is not a Tosali, but a Dune. ****, my family has had too many children. Well, I wish Norland the best of luck in having my kinslaying, lackwit, uncouth, bastard, brother as one of their bannermen. His impure half-breed children are not likely to get along with the purebred humans there. Norlandic culture and pride at its finest, no?" Andren would muse, in good spirit, before tossing the letter aside.
