    [!] A depiction of a Haeseni Zvaerd.

    Spoiler

[Yes, I wrote lore for Beyblades.]

    The game of Bottezk Zvaerdz

Bottezk Zvaerdz is a game originating from the lands of Hanseti-Ruska. Using wooden tops created intentionally for this entertaining battle game, competitors release their tops in the wooden Bottezk Zvaerd arena to test who the strongest player in the realm is! This game can be played by 2+ players, although standard-sized stadiums will become rather crowded at around 8 competitors.

    Rules of the Game

    • I. To begin the round, the competitors must count down from three and declare “Zvas supae vy!” (or “Let it rip!” in common) and release their tops into the arena at the same time.
    • II. The tops in the wooden arena will battle until one is knocked out of the arena, or falls. If both fall at the same time, the round will be called a tie.
    • III. The last to remain spinning in the arena will be named the victor of the round. If the victor’s opponent fell, the victor receives +1 point. If the victor’s opponent was knocked out of the arena, the victor received +2 points.
    • IV. The first to reach 10 points wins the game.
    • V. If playing with more than two players, add 5 points to the end goal for each extra person.
    • VI. Even when playing with more than two players, only one top may remain standing at the end for points to be awarded.
    • VII. When playing with more than two players, you may earn points for every top that was knocked out or knocked down.

    [OOC Rules]

    • I. [Each player rolls out of 20 when the round starts.
    • II. The player with the highest roll wins the round.
    • III. A player who is beaten by more than 10 in a roll is knocked out of the arena. If the difference is less than 10, they are only knocked down. This applies regardless of the number of players.]

Zvaerdz are simple wooden battling tops designed for the game of Bottezk Zvaerdz. The average Zvaerd weighs approximately 3oz and is carved from solid wood into a heavy-duty spinning top. Official Zvaerdz have detailed engravings upon the top, otherwise known as facepieces. Official Zvaerdz may be purchased from the Roger & Co. shop. The shop currently offers Golden Crow Zvaerdz, HRA Zvaerdz, (LE) Koeng Josef Zvaerdz, (LE) Koenas Isabel Zvaerdz, and (LE) Lord Manfred Zvaerdz. Zvaerdz can be made by one’s self; however, size and weight may be inconsistent.

The Bottezk Zvaerdz arenas consist of large, shallow wooden battle stadiums, which resemble oversized serving bowls. The interior wood should be sanded smooth for maximum spin. These can be found in various locations around New Reza, or easily carved on one's own.

  2. Kamila Baruch dug her nails into the palm of her hand as she sat in the childhood bedroom she had shared with her sisters. She recalled the years of their father’s abuse, the events which had led to her sister’s untimely death. As always, she was devastated and angry but not tearful. Since her parents’ deaths, never expressing emotion. She rubbed the tips of her fingers along the scars that had never quite healed along her wrists, those hands that were always gloved, the same as her sister’s. “Res’ easy, Roza. Whoever did this isn’ goin’ where yer goin’.” she ground out.

  3. Eleanora Mannox, the prosecutor of the case, nods along as she reads. "Law and Order will prevail. My many thanks to the Jovenaar for explaining to these fools the difference between treason and opinion." The folds the paper up, setting it on the rickety kitchen table of her family's shabby home. She proceeds to weep over the inability for her to change both font and text color in responses.

I write of a story told to me and my brothers by our mother, Marya Baruch var Ruthern, back when we were children many years ago. As the last of her children, and as the sickness spreads throughout my bones, I saw it fit to write this tale down on parchment for the first time since it was originally told generations ago. I dedicate the first written version of this folktale to my four sons: Karl, Rickard, Aldrik, and Varon. May they grow to be strong northerners, as their family before them.

Centuries ago, in the faraway lands of Vailor, the isles of olde were riddled with the marring of violence and warfare. The unjust Duke of Courland, removing his vassals from their lands to expand his power, had angered his human neighbors. The strong men of Carnatia and Vasiland allied their forces and set off to battle against the Courlandic threat, led by an ancient Barbanov.

During one such battle, that of the Battle of the Curon Forest, the Coalition was in trouble. The forest was slick from the heavy rainfall as the troupes pushed on through the tree cover. The commanders had abandoned their steeds miles back, being unable to pass through the dense underbrush and hazardous mud. The two commanders led their men onwards, toward the awaiting enemy. The Duke of Courland commanded three times the forces of the Coalition, despite this knowledge, the brave soldiers marched forth. The Courland forces hid among the trees not far off, lacking in strength and honour but not in wiliness, they brandished alchemist’s fire.

As the sky grew dark and night fell, the troops drew to a halt, setting up camp not a few miles from the front lines at the orders of their Barbanov commander. They didn’t dare light a fire, eating stale bread for their supper and sleeping atop the boggy earth. Throughout the night, the Courlanders lay in wait.

As dawn broke, the soldiers ate their measly rations and proceeded, cautiously, deeper into the forest. The Barbanov leader sent a scout ahead, knowing they were drawing near. Unfortunately, it was too late, in the blink of an eye, everything around the troops was flaming. The shattering of glass bottles sounded through the trees. The commander’s boot slipped with the startling sudden attack, and he was thrown to the muddied ground. His voice rang out over the shouts of his men, commanding them to get back into position.

Following the Barbanov’s every order, the soldiers pushed forth, but they were beyond outnumbered. For each Courlander cut down, another two sprang up. The commander led the push nonetheless. As they started to lose ground, the commander realized his men were losing faith. He called out loudly, but the clash of blades and the sounds of combat drowned him out. Through the trees ahead, however, he could see something running.

As it drew closer, he realized what it was. A massive northern stag, larger than a fully mature horse, burst through the trees. He continued to fight as the beast ran directly to him, leaving trampled Courlanders in its wake. In a moments gap in the onslaught, the stag lowered itself to the ground, and without hesitation, the commander hoisted himself onto its back.

The Barbanov’s voice boomed louder now as he called out to the soldiers of the Coalition. Far more Courland uniforms now lay still. The commander and the mighty stag cut down all in their path, and the soldiers followed suit.

All at once, an arrow whistled through the air above the battle, and pierced through the commander’s chest as his steed was midstride. He toppled from the stag, the life seeping from his body before it hit the earth. The men nearest him bellowed in rage, but followed as the stag pressed onward. Their commander was gone, yet they pushed forward until the entire enemy force lay still in the mud, and the victor’s banners were waved high.

The stag retreated back into the forest from which it had come, and a cheer of northern glory echoed from the men on the battlefield. Despite their losses, they had won.

  5. The nation mourns the loss of a talented poet, and in particular, a spirited mousey-haired woman welcomes the author into the Seven Skies. A dedicated writer, and yet a man who had taken the then-squire under his wing, the man to teach her how to wield a blade. A near-forgotten Primrose Kortrevich thanks the man who led her to knighthood.

    Coats and Furs

    Khanbej

(Khan = Coat, Bej = Long)

The khanbej is a traditional, high-quality coat, commonly worn by Haensemen of high standing. The coats are generally rather long, sometimes decorated with detailed embroidery or patterning. The khanbej is a favored clothing item of Ruskan descent, hailing back hundreds of years. Although worn out of necessity in the cold northern climate, the garment also displays power, masculinity, and wealth.

    Darskholv

(Darusz = Furry, Kholv = Cold)

The darskholv is a common clothing piece worn by both men and women throughout the kingdom. Both fur stoles and fur coats are included in the generalized term, ‘darskholv.’ These garments are worn to stave off the biting cold during frigid Haeseni winters. Generally tailored of rabbit, fox, or mink fur, they offer not only protection from the cold, but unique fashion within the Haeseni courts. Men and women of high status and skill may wear darskholvz of wolf pelt to display honor and bravery. The darskholv, just like the khanbej, was also a historically Ruskan vestment.

    Dresses and Gowns

    Sanguss

(Sansk = Dress, Guss = Poor)

The sanguss is a traditional dress worn by Haeseni women of low status. These dresses, generally sewn with inexpensive or cheap fabrics, are beautiful nonetheless. The dresses feature distinct cinching strings across the bodice, and ribbon bows around the waist. The positioning of the ribbon, if worn properly, is important to note. A woman with a bow-tied against her right hip is displaying her married status, a woman with a bow tied across her middle may be undecided or courting, and a woman with a bow on her left hip remains unspoken for. This garment is traditional of Hansetian dress, passed down through generations of Haeseni women.

    Sanbej

(Sansk = Dress, Bej = Long)

The sanbej is the expensive counterpart to the sanguss. These fine gowns, worn by women of high standing and wealth, are common among the royalty and nobility within Hanseti-Ruska. They are finely tailored with materials such as silk, satin, and linen. These dresses do not generally feature the classic bow of the sanguss, and instead, don classier patterns and embroidering. These gowns are most often worn at floor-length, and consist of multiple layers of fabric, helping to insulate against the chill.

    Hats, Shoes, and Otherwise

    Heusjet

    (Heut = Hat)

The heusjet, known in common as the beret, is the most commonly worn hat in the Kingdom of Hanseti-Ruska. These are usually worn by men, but women may also be seen donning these hats. The heusjet is a more recent addition to tradition Haeseni garb, becoming more common within the last century, and has recently been added to the uniforms of the Haense Royal Army.

    Baijlejz

    (Baijlej = Boot)

Baijlejz are the most commonly worn footwear, having been crafted and sold for hundreds of years. These boots are made of sturdy leather and can range from ankle-high to more than halfway up the shin. The soles of these boots are generally made from maple or elmwood and are well polished and sealed. A wide range of options can be seen in these shoes, and are worn by both men and women.

    Anzkhanz

(Anz = Hands, Khan = Coat)

Anzkhan is simply the New Marian word for ‘glove.’ Usually made out of leather or wool, anzkhanz are worn throughout the winter months to protect the hands from the icy cold. These small accessories are generally fairly simple in appearance, worn more so for practicality than a sense of fashion.

    Plate and Uniforms

    Platen

    (Platen = Plate Armor)

Platen is mostly worn by the nobility of the Kingdom, the majority of which represents the colors of each House. Consisting of more expensive material, platen is not seen as often, unless worn by a soldier of higher ranking, or the aforementioned nobility. Due to the colder climate of Hanseti-Ruska the armor is typically insulated and worn with varying amounts of fur.

    Junen

    (Junen = Uniform)

Junen is adorned most often by the Royal Army of the Kingdom, though can be seen within the levies of the past and present. The current junen of the Kingdom represents the coat of arms of the King, displaying a red and white background with the colors of House Barbanov forming the shape of a shield.

“Of the three princesses will remain two, one’s color is faded the other in blue. The shadow grows, it moves closer. Tick. Tick. Tick. Louder and louder. Fire… fire and war. So much war.”

The words of a child, ginger-haired and eerily spoken, radiated through the red princess’s mind as the sounds of the forest echoed around her. Her mind was fuzzy, and she could feel her clarity slipping through the cracks. Cheers and song echoed through the tall, northern trees as the small Haeseni troop drew to a halt.

    -=-

‘Moonfire’ they had called it. The sickly scent of the purple smoke had been intoxicating, and the Scyflings had been unsettlingly kind and inviting. A night where the violence and cruelty of war were null and void, and loud celebrations were held. The Scyflings had invited the Haensemen into their camps to drink and be merry. And merry they were, for the purple flames bloomed puffs of strong incense, working its way into their heads and forming a false sense of joy among their ranks.

    -=-

They had hastily left the camp as the effects had begun to take hold, those now-jolly Haensemen, working their way through the trees to scout out their other acquaintances. They, too, seemed to be celebrating this holiday and its mind-clouding vapor. The troops, however, were high-strung, the forest creatures causing them to jump and start despite the festivities.

    -=-

Unfortunately, their paranoia was not unwarranted, as a lone arrow thudded to the ground before them. At the raised exclamations of the Haeseni, the drunken Scyfling celebrators rushed to their aid. They quickly started for New Reza, not bolstering the numbers to engage in a conflict. Unfortunately, as they crossed Boot Bridge, they realized they had no choice. A group of Scyflings, intricately dressed, clambered over the ridge before them. The young princess in their midst, being the only one to spot them, quickly called for the soldiers to raise their shields. But she herself stood front and center, as to take the brunt of the first volley of arrows.

    -=-

Amelya reeled backward as an arrow buried itself in her navel, causing her to cry out in pain. One of the knights rushed to her aid, shielding her as he assisted in her retreat. As her strength faltered and the blood pooled, however, Ser Ivan resorted to carrying her, causing her beloved beret to fall to the muddied road.

    -=-

The boy’s prophecy continued to toll in her worsening mind, echoing and repeating as her gaze fell upon the river at their flank. This river, she knew, led to the cursed lake she had been terrified of since her childhood. It had taken her grandmother, her aunt, it was there she had disposed of her mother’s assailant. It was why she had never learned to swim; never dared to try. Despite this, in her weakening state, the water called to her. She would not allow Bralt to have her, she wished to return to her family.

    -=-

With the last of her strength, she wrenched free of Ser Ivan’s grasp, dragging herself to the bank. By the time her Uncle Godfric arrived, the man who had raised the orphaned princess for the majority of her brief life, the princess was nearly dead, oblivious to all but the choppy words clanging in her head. As she attempted to look to those offering help,  another arrow struck her in the side. She jolted, tumbling into the water she had dragged herself too. She was swept away instantly, the rapidly moving river sending the near-dead woman down the length of the foothills.

    “Rest with the moon, Crow.”

Hardly anything passed through her mind as the river spat her out into the frigid lake. No memories, no final vows, only the words of the prophecy. Down she sank, too weak to even flail, the prophecy pounding in her skull. Tick. Tick. Tick. Her numbed hands managed to unclasp the last of her plate as the air left her lungs. Fire… fire and war. The bubbles rose as she mouthed it. Finally, as her mouth closed, the life faded from her body, and up she rose.

    -=-

Hours later, a small child in a tiara darted past, skittering to a halt along the lake’s shore. “A-Auntie Amelya!” the child had called out, waving to her aunt as she swam in the lake. The child’s brows furrowed as she noticed the woman’s lack of response, lack of movement. “..Auntie Amelya?” she repeated, eyes widening in disbelief. A wail echoed from the young princess as the realization washed over her. She stared at her aunt, floating motionless in the freezing water. With that, she ran breathlessly for the city, her fine skirts billowing behind her as she carried the terrible news to their family.

“Of the three princesses will remain two, one’s color is faded the other in blue.”

“If I can not die for our people, why should they die for me?”

  9. Princess Amelya Valeriya gasps as she dismounts her horse, having ridden to the burial site upon reading the missive. She draws a hand to her mouth as she looks over the desecrated grave of the woman who had died defending her. The grave she had dug herself to lay the Helvetti woman peacefully to rest, lay churned and ruined. “What putrid, rancid people. To dig up one from their final resting place is an act against Godan himself. Lady Arianne was a woman of Haense, this will not go unpunished.” The young woman cursed under her breath, laying a lone flower across the headstone that was now knocked askew. “Requiescat en pasce.” she murmured, “We’ll see this injustice solved.”

Following four years of constant battles and conflict, the Lady Speaker has decided that it is no longer reasonable to withhold sessions of the Royal Duma. The reasoning for this decision is as stated below.

    1.  After four years without a gathering of the body, there is a necessity for the resuming of legislation within the Kingdom.
    2. Although the Scyflings remain a threat, domestic law must return to its previous standing for the good of our civil state.
    3. The voices of our lords and governmental representatives must continue to be heard despite outside threat.

Due to these reasons, the Royal Duma of Hanseti-Ruska shall hereby resume its sessions on the 8th of Tov and Yermey, 326.

  12. Suspension of the Royal Duma, 1769

    10th of Jula and Piov, 322 E.S.|10th of Malin’s Welcome, 1769

Issued by Her Excellency, Marya Kortrevich, Lady Speaker of the Royal Duma and confirmed by His Majesty Sigmund II of Haense

Due to the recent aggressions along our northern coasts, the Lady Speaker has decided that it is in the best interest of the Kingdom that the Royal Duma be suspended until the threat has passed. The reasoning for this decision is as stated below.

    1. Our lords and military commanders are needed on the battlefront as frequently as possible, rather than in the chambers.
    2. The focus on the Scyfling invasion allows little time for the proper formulating and writing of bills.
    3. Members should be focused on war happenings and the security of our coasts over attending the Royal Duma at this time.

Sessions of the Royal Duma will resume once the Scyfling invaders have been defeated and disposed of. The Lady Speaker will see to it that sessions return to normal once approval is received from the King to do so.

    IV JOVEO MAAN,

Her Excellency, Lady Marya of the House of Kortrevich, Lady Speaker of the Kingdom of Hanseti-Ruska, Margravine of Korstadt, Baroness of Koravia

  13. Though the two had never spoken, Dame Primrose Kortrevich welcomed the young Haeseni swords-woman into the Seven Skies with open arms. “Yet another woman who died to protect our kingdom.” the aged knight-ess spoke to her in an admiring tone. “There’s no better way to go, young one, but you went too soon. A grand dame you would have made, child. A grand dame.”

The Royal Academy of Saint Catherine was originally put in place by Her Late Majesty Maya of Muldav; however, due to her untimely death, the state of The Academy fell into a state of disuse for a period. Armande de Falstaff had attempted to take charge of it and reform classes, though remained occupied by other matters. So, Her Royal Majesty Viktoria and two of the Royal Triplets, Princess Alexandria and Princess Amelya, have decided to come together and breathe life back into The Academy and offer education to the denizens of Hanseti-Ruska; as Her Late Majesty had once attempted years ago. The Academy will be run and managed by the Princesses Alexandria and Amelya Barbanov.

         Va Birodeo Herzenav e Edlervik,

As is custom of the realm, a general election shall be held in order to determine the officeholders of the elected positions within the Kingdom of Hanseti-Ruska.

There are three positions that shall be open for citizens to run for, those being the offices of the Grand Maer of New Reza, the Royal Alderman, and Tribune. Those wishing to run must submit an application. Incumbents for these offices shall be automatically be added to the ballot unless otherwise told, although it is highly recommended that they still tender an application to the Office of the Lord Palatine for record-keeping purposes.

For those unfamiliar with the roles of our Kingdom’s elected positions, the duties of these offices are as follows:

The Royal Alderman: Aldermen are elected to represent the people of the kingdom in the Royal Duma, the legislative body of the realm. The single most popular candidate from each election cycle is chosen to serve as this representative, and are tasked with listening to their constituents and proposing laws relating to their interests in the Duma.

Grand Maer of New Reza: The Maer is charged with orchestrating the daily operations of the royal capital. His or her job is to see to the proper maintenance of the royally sanctioned tavern, the attraction of new businesses and economic growth to the Kingdom of Hanseti-Ruska, and the regular organization of city events. He or she reports directly to the High Steward, who in turn reports to the Crown.

Tribune: The Tribune is an elected position in the Royal Duma. It must be filled by one who is of common birth to further ensure the representation of the lower classes in the body. Tribunes are tasked with listening to their constituents and relating their actions in the Duma with their interests in mind.

As well, Denizens are reminded that the following prerequisites have been established in order to both vote and stand for these offices:

  16. The Loss of Haeseni Cultures

Restoring historical Haeseni culture to the highlander people

Through my studies within the Royal Academy of Saint Catherine as well as private tutoring throughout my childhood, I’ve come to realize that the culture within our great kingdom’s highlander roots has begun to fade away over time. This document I’ve written encompasses the loss of both recent and ancient cultural aspects that we’ve since forgotten; its aim is to remind the public of their ancestry and breathe their customs back to life.

    The Speech of the Highlands

A strong, well-known feature of strong northern men is the distinct gruffness and drawl to their tone. Though these accents have faded over the centuries of our kingdom’s great existence, remnants of the past remain within some of our nobility. The northern men of House Baruch, in particular, retain the strongest northern and Marian-like accent in our time. This accent includes deepness of tone, the omission of hard ‘H’ sounds as well as ‘T’s.

Though the return of such accents to our people as a whole is unlikely, it’s important to recollect upon the changes in our kingdom. Our strong, Raev roots are the building blocks for the individuality and great history of Hanseti-Ruska, and we must acknowledge such.

    Traditional Dress

Haeseni dress has always differed largely from that of our Crownlander counterparts. This is mainly due to the major change in climates between our cities; our own homeland being far colder than that of the Orenians. It has always been custom for highlanders to wear furs and cloaks for insulation purposes, but we seem to have forgotten other elements and trends from the past.

Colorful garb has always been a beautiful element of Haeseni style, and one that we seem to have left behind in recent years. Old paintings depict colorful and spectacular articles of clothing, rather than the shabby, colorless overcoats that have flooded our dirt streets. Though black clothing is generally preferred in today’s society, the lack of color and individuality among our gowns and tailcoats has reached its peak. It’s time to throw out the musty potato sacks and make room for wonderful colors.

Not only have we grown distant from colorful clothing, but also accessories worn in the past. Berets were worn frequently, The Blue Berets during the War of Two Emperors were a notable group who wore such hats. Thanks to the work of our king, in recent years berets have made a strong return in the uniforms of the Haense Royal Army (HRA).

    Haeseni Cuisine

Though Carrion Black has been a key staple of our drinking habits for decades, we seem to have forgotten the old Haeseni treat of rum-spiked cocoa. An important recipe to the women of House Barbanov for generations, hot cocoa quickly made its way to the bars of common-folk and nobility alike. As with any beverage, the northern men of Haense spiked the favorable drink. Rum, the sweet alcohol created from distilling molasses, was a natural option.

This warm, soothing drink became a beloved drink of soldiers weathering the cold in war camps, a warming beverage to enjoy while spending late nights drinking in the tavern, and a welcome gift to a home-coming husband or son upon returning from duty. A vague recipe is as listed below.

Recently, four traditional berries have made their way back into Haeseni cuisine. These fruits, generally known as Prikaz berries, are found upon rocks and can be used to create a variety of beverages and foods. Wild Prikaz is commonly used to make Prikaz Tea. Red Prikaz is used to make Prikaz Wine, a staple beverage within the kingdom, and to make jams. Hansetian Prikaz can be used in cooking, or sun-dried and eaten alone. Royal Prikaz is fermented to create Edeylvise, a traditional red wine. These berries are delectable and have many general uses for the Haeseni people.

With these points, I leave my devout readers to ponder the ancient histories of this great kingdom. It is our highlander blood that differentiates our honorable people from the rest of humanity, and thus our customs must differ as well.

  18. Amelya Valeriya’s eyes widened as she read the missive. She fell back on her bed, hands shaking as her vision clouds. “U-Uncle Otto?” murmurs the girl in disbelief, her breathing quickening as she heaved. “Did you… did you remember me before you went?” The young princess tugged at her sleeves, rising from her bed with a start no sooner than she had lowered herself onto it. This man had been one of the only parental figures she had left, now there was only one.

The girl stood in the middle of her room, remembering back to the day months ago where her beloved uncle had forgotten her name. “I can’t quite remember your name, but I know that you’re someone I love.” he had told her, the man having forgotten his whereabouts, thinking himself to be back in his youth. It pained her to think of her uncle’s deteriorating health, but what hurt more was to know one of the men who raised her could no longer recall her name.

The girl crumpled the paper between her palms, her knuckles whitening as she did so. Though her sisters were usually the first she ran to, they were not the first on her mind. Out of her room, the girl sprinted, thundering down the stairs. Tears streaming down her face, the girl ran for the Alimar manor, one thought on her mind. Her Uncle Godfric, the only father she had left.

She barged in through the doors, hurrying frantically to where she spotted her uncle, seated silently at the table. He turned as she entered, and the young girl barrelled into his chest. “I- I love you.” the child whispered, before descending into a fit of child-like sobs.

  19. Amelya Valeriya smiles as she sees the portrait of herself and her sisters tending to their loyal soldiers. “We could not call ourselves Princesses if we did not care for our warriors, hm?” she says softly, smiling to her triplets.
