In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: I think it's important to be humble and realize that roleplay involves *real* people. It's natural to take enjoyment out of winning in combat scenarios, but you have to also take enjoyment in losing combat scenarios so that the other person can win too. Besides, roleplay in itself is random and chaotic, and you don't always have control- that's what makes it fun. To not powergame, I ground myself by stepping into my character's shoes and going over their capabilities. Do they exceed or recede my opponents' capabilities? And even if my character's abilities exceed theirs, there's no harm in letting them get wins where it's deserved.

I honestly believe that people powergame for 2 reasons:
1- They don't want to lose and are selfish
    2- They don't realize they're doing it

For the 2nd reason especially, it's important to hear out what other people in my roleplay are telling me. If they point out how something I'm doing is unfair, I shouldn't dismiss it.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Metagaming is using information that was acquired OOC for IC purposes. If everyone's characters knew everything, roleplay would be very shallow. No secrets, no surprises, no effort needed to actually *earn* power.
Let's assume I'm the ruler of a kingdom hiding away in my castle. Enemies have surrounded it and are looking for a way in. If I have a friend in the enemy group that's telling me every plan going on in a Discord call, that'd be very unfair as my character should have no idea what's going on. Even if my character had spies, he couldn't act on the spot, he would need this information delivered in character. Even the usage of spies and the deliverance of this information could be fantastic roleplay and intrigue that'd be lost if I was metagaming. But to answer the question, it'd disrupt this roleplay because my character could counter any possible attack, thus getting an unfair advantage.

Character Name: Caedric Greenwood
Character Race: Human
Character Gender: Male
Character Age: 20
Physical Description: Caedric is a 5'9 blonde human male on the skinnier side. He has forest green eyes, and usually wears fancy clothing.
Roleplay Scenario:

Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

Caedric entered the tent waving his hand across his face, clearly bothered by the swampy smells. A lute was slung over his shoulder, and he seemed confused by the hag's words.

"Hello, wonderful lady. I don't believe we've met, so I don't quite understand how you'd be expecting me."

Nonetheless, he bowed kindly- his right leg behind his bent left knee, and open arms to the side.

"I am Caedric Greenwood, a travelling bard by trade! I was just passing through and thought I could cheer the place up a bit." He brought his hand up to his mouth into a whispering motion, and lowered his voice. "It seems it may need it..."

After a moment of awkward silence, he picked a cushion to cross his legs on, and began his tale with a naive smile.

"Not much story to tell, really! I was born and raised in a humble village. My mother was a talented musician and taught me everything I know about instruments. My father, may he rest easy, taught me the basics of survival. I've only recently left the village to pursue my dream of becoming a bard.. I'm sorry, who are you, exactly? Would you like a song?"
