How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: It generally starts with character creation. If I create a character too powerful, it'll be harder to avoid power gaming so I avoid characters that are too powerful. The second, and more important action is making sure I participate in a proper back and forth with those I am roleplaying with. I ensure that I am not taking too much from the story and allowing others to participate equally. This generally encourages fair and equal roleplay where no one character is too powerful.
How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: Metagaming dampens the sense of immersion. When characters act on information they shouldn't know, the story is disrupted and less enjoyable and then feels less real.

You’ve just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As you look around, your gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. You duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? she begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

I raise my head slightly, wary of the woman before me. I slowly lower myself to the ground, taking the cushion she so graciously offered. "You've been... expecting me?" I say in a hushed tone. I look behind myself and then attempt to peak behind her. Once I feel at ease I relax a little. "Well, I suppose I could share a small morsel of my life with you before I must be going," I say as I readjust my position. I lean forward and begin. "I guess I've been travelling more lately, trying to figure things out. Life is long for elves, too long some might say. I am still young but I've been through just over 40 years and for many humans that is half their life. I need to know my purpose. I know at some point I want to settle down as all people do, rest surrounded by those I love, but that is barely within view. I have years before can even consider that and I haven't even found someone to share that with anyways. Friends and family are so few and far between. Everything so far has been so unremarkable, and worthless. Life is precious but what am I to do with it? I must find something." I stop, and look deep into the woman's eyes hoping for some impactful response.
