In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Metagaming is when you, as the player, take information that your character currently doesn't know through applicable roleplay context - information obttained through out-of-character means - and apply it to your character's knowledge.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Powergaming is when you have already expressed the outcome of your roleplay action without taking into consideration the other player's involvement in said encounter; this limits the other characters response and gives you an unfair advantage over the roleplay.

William Bourdain was born in 1785 during the middle of the seventh seed - the Deep Cold - to an exceptionally poor fisherman and his wife seated in a insignificant village outside of Helena, the capitol of the Holy Orenian Empire.  An exceptionally grim winter at the time, William's first few months were inarguably the most difficult of his life. William's father had issues with being able to routinely provide food to the family due to the rivers and lakes being iced over at the time, and the family lacked the money to be able to consistently afford anything from the markets; this inability to provide for his family caused a great rift to occur between William's father and his mother which would eventually worsen.

However, by the grace of the Creator, William survived his first winter. The first few years of William's life were very mundane in his village where there wasn't much to do aside from spending time with his father. While his family was very poor, his father tried his best to help William have somewhat of an education so that he could potentially have a bright future. The family couldn't afford sending him to a school, but William's father was intelligent enough to be able to teach him things such as math and language skills. William's mother was often times too busy with matters outside of the household to be able to help him with his education.

There weren't many children William's age in the village except the next-door farmer's son Henry Steinrich. Henry and him would often have their own little adventures near a rockbed outside of the village. One day at the age of six, Henry and William were playing until dark at the rockbed. Both children climbed on top of a boulder that resided on top of the rockbed which watched over it. William suggested that they horse-play on top of the boulder; the two soon began to push eachother, seeing who fell off first. With each shove, Henry began to move closer and closer to the boulder's edge where until eventually he slipped headfirst and fell to his death. After his only companion's death William soon realized that he should never make decisions on his own, for it was his decision that resulted in Henry's demise.

Shortly after, William began to properly heal from his friend's passing. It was one night at the age of seven that his mother stormed into the family's little shack with a male forest elf by her side. She exclaimed that she's leaving and that the forest elf could provide for her better than William's father ever could. This experience scarred William and caused him to develop hatred towards elves and distrust in women. He believed that elves are master manipulators are that's the reason why his mother left. William and his father's relationship grew very close as a result of these events, with William prioritizing his father's well-being because of how much he meant to him. The bond between father and son was inseperatable.

At the age of eleven was when William migrated from Arcas to Almaris with his father. Although there were more children his age in the place that they setlled at in Almaris, William was very reclusive due to the trauma that he experienced when he was younger. He instead focused more on educating himself through whatever means he could obtain; this usually meant stealing books. One evening while much older at the age of eighteen, William was caught red-handed stealing literature. As a result he was banished from his village. He promised his father that he would make him proud and ultimately better his father's life. He set out into the world with wanderlust, hoping to accomplish the promise he made his father.

It didn't take long before William ran out of minas to fund his "adventuring." It was then that he met Gustaven von Halsfield ((knights5544)), a founding-member of the Order of the Black Crow, a mercenary guild. Gustaven was by no means a mercenary, spending his time doing more drinking rather than fighting, but William soon became very close with him and joined the guild with him for the sake of needing steady income. William, young and inexperienced, is soon to learn much about the world ahead of  him.
