McGrath is a Highlander who had joined a religious crusade at a young age to try and live up to his families expectations. Years passed, and he had become a respected individual in the large group he fought with. A week after his 40th birthday, he was crusading far north of Haense, in the ice plains of an unknown land. The Crusaders camped one night on the top of a massive glacier, which happened to be the home of a Blood Warlock, practicing the dark arts. Under the cover of night, he passed through the camp, looking for able-bodied and mentally strong subjects to experiment on, while silently killing those who were deemed unfit. Only 9 individuals, including McGrath, were personally selected. The 9 spent a year’s worth of time stuck in the glacier, subjected to unimaginable torture experiments and bone melding procedures, permanently disfiguring some and even killing 1. Eventually, the remaining 8 managed to kill the Warlock in a streak of luck, after he had drained too much of his own blood, and was too weak to re-lock the cells they resided in. They beat him to death and all escaped, bringing their lost friend for a proper burial and leaving the far-north with no intent to return. McGrath has done his best to try and stay in touch with his friends, sometimes meeting up in bars and other times helping each other out of rough spots. A ritual they follow every year to respect the people who died is to travel back to that glacier and camp on it, as a solemn nod to what should have happened that fateful night. McGrath does not fight much anymore, but is still skilled with a sword and shield.
