Moodyne

Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

Fiore, lackadaisically entertaining what she assumes to be some charlatan, walks into the tent and plants herself onto a cushion.

"Though I have no inkling as to your ends, I'll play along for a geezer like you. Sometime during a famine decades ago, my father brought me to a village far from my birthplace, only to leave me in the care of a crotchety miser. Giacomo was both a shrewd and terrible man, never spending more than he needed yet unmatched in larceny. From a young age I was his accomplice, causing scenes and pickpocketing satchels. Giacomo always had a backup plan in place for when he was caught on multiple occasions, with bribes and excuses abound. As for me? I had little choice in our escapades, but despite Giacomo's rough exterior and harsh demeanor towards me, he'd make sure I was fed and became livid whenever a drunkard or rude brat insulted me."

"Eventually on our way to a larger city to find better marks, a week-long storm forced us to stay at an inn on a major road. The old man made sure to pilfer every shiny object with the misfortune of being seen by his greedy eyes. I took up a stint as a barmaid, thinking I could make extra coin during this stay before moving on. One night while looking for anything not nailed down in the stables, Giacomo would find a satchel of valuables on an ornery donkey. A lightning strike caused the donkey to panic and fatally bash into the now elderly Giacomo. He never recovered from the beating, and would die weeks after we planned to leave this inn. I stayed at this ramshackle place for another few weeks, but my stubborn old man's death would never stop my ambitions, and since I've travelled around stealing and lying. He's gone, but the old miser's habits never died I suppose. "

Fiore stands up, leaving with one last comment: "Oh, and thanks for the extra coins!"
