Matthias was born to unknown parents, and left at the entrance of a Church of the Canon. It was there he was housed by a lesser priest and educated in the ways of the Creator and the Four Holy Scrolls. Had he a knack for scholarly work, he might have sought a living in the Church, however, it was made clear at a young age that Matthias wasn’t cut out for a learned path. Impulsive and quick to anger, Matthias was often disciplined by his father-figure, to little avail. Although kind-hearted, Matthias often found himself in trouble. In his early teens, after an accident where Matthias and a group of urchin-boys mistakenly broke a stained glass window, Matthias was driven from the Church which he called sanctuary. Despite this, he still held utmost respect for his father-figure and the Church as a whole.
From that day onward, Matthias attempted to make an honest living, working whatever odd-jobs he could. His knack for finding trouble never left him, which often prevented him from developing a trade. It seemed Matthias would always be an unskilled laborer, but perhaps his luck would turn.
