In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Give and Take principle usually, in which every action has to be looked through the lense of "if i do x to xeta, what y can i give to xeta"; i like to describe it as "A game of chess would be easy if my opponent would not move their pieces... but also really boring"; in essence, it is the empathetic understanding that you are NOT the protagonist of the other persons story, and that they are trying to "play" and "win" just as much as you do, and for everyone to have fun at playing, there has to be at least the realistic and fun chance at succeeding at whatever they are doing (within reasonable measures, if a dude in dnd is hit with a "Hold Person" i believe it is safe to assume that there is little realistic give and take, though they have the chance to react to the cast etc.)

Or, to cut it simply, and how it is described in the wiki "To attempt" instead to "Do." outright.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: To a certain degree meta is unavoidable when characters meet up in a scripted manner of course; but metagaming is unfair if a player acts upon information/abuses information that they couldn't feasibly have. Examples for this include reading up upon powers and abilities and applying that knowledge within character without ever having encountered nor learnt that ability yourself, reading up upon weaknesses of creatures, reading into anothers character sheets to potentially use secrets that character may hold against them as option for blackmail, etc etc etc

Fair roleplay is, when a character gains an information and acts upon it, or is taken by surprise of a situation. Fairness can only come, if one side has the chance to surprise the other, which is denied through meta-gaming.

Character Name: Marya
Character Race: Highlander
Character Gender: Female
Character Age: 21
Physical Description: 6ft tall, 152lb heavy, ginger that is dyed with darker with red beets, blue eyes, long black cloaks, linen dresses and a crude set of glasses.
Roleplay Scenario:

Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

The interest of the woman was met with a piercing gaze of sheer mistrust, only for her to look quickly left and right, just to make sure she was actually being spoken to.

"Me?", finally escaped the young womans mouth, shuttering almost at the sound of her own voice, mustering the lady that approached her with wakeful eyes behind the concealing reflection of her classes, "You must be mistaken,... I am looking for someone, no one particular just someone that looks smart."

She took a short break in between words, just to let what was spoken sink in, and yet as the interest of the woman that had approached her didn't seem to waver, she picked up initiative again "Now that you are here though, do you mind helping me with my search? I am looking for a teacher, a powerful one would be great yet... someone that understands a thing or two about the functions of magic? I had seen that kind of man, once back in my town, a man that could weave the threads of fire in his fingers, sparking them, entertaining the townsfolk with his tricks. I was wondering if you would know where to find such a person, they seem rare, and yet I cannot help but yearn for these secrets. I just have to know."

There was a flame in her eyes, a flame that was lit so many years ago, and a hunger that drove her away from home, one that was constantly eating on what innocence she might hold.
