Ulfric was born and raised among the Hanseti kingdom, growing up to seek battle, but differing from them in the religious aspect. He enlisted to the army as soon as he could, and became a skillful warrior; but also a proficient strategist and sort of a intellectual. This made him to be overconfident of his capacities - physical and psychologically -, so he usually did things recklessly; resulting in frequent wounds.
As he had some difficulties to understand emotions, he had a fight with another soldier, and he slashed Ulfric with a dagger in the face in pure anger; leaving a scar that would stay there for years. This didn't affect his proudness over himself, but gave him a very important lesson: you have to pay attention to your surroundings and actions.
He decided that religion should be the only thing at the world whom he shows his emotions.
Since then, he matured mentally, and started to really see the world with other eyes.
