Walter was born and raised in Renatus Marna. Maybe if he was born somewhere else he wouldn't of been so troubled. Renatus Marna may be an amazing place to live, if you're a noble, but the Grey family was engulfed in poverty. Peasants having few rights in the Renatus Marna effected Walter, and may of caused his hate for the rich. Another thing that changed him was his relationship with his parents. They barely talked because they all always worked on the farm. The only person he was close with was his older sister Mary, he looked up to her, and he helped her. She was a year older then him, this didn't make things awkward though.
One day at supper time something peculiar happened. This was uncommon, them always living a normal, peasant life. His mother, Alys brought something up.
"Mary, Walter. Your father will not be at supper tonight."
Walter didn't want to know, he was afraid, afraid of many things, but one stood out, death. The rest of dinner they did not speak.
The next day Mary told him what had really happened.
"He got subject to some illness Walt.. thought ye' might as well need to see the truth for yourself."
Walter stayed quiet, from that day on he stayed quiet, even if he didn't know his father well, it still was a tragedy to him, even if he was eleven only, as he got older, it still held the same sadness. Days passed, days felt like months, months felt like years, things were harder with one less person to help bring in money. After a month they lost most of the furniture, after two months they only had what felt like a crumb a day. After half a year they lost their home.
After they had nothing to get money from they started stealing, needing to survive somehow. They continued this life style for five years. One day, when Walter was sixteen, he was tired of this, tired of life, tired of this way to live. He ran, he ran. Not away from his family, but to something big. Something expensive.
He ran until he found something expensive. Silk he passed by, he knew that material anywhere. He slowly took a few steps back. One step. Two steps. Three steps. He grabbed the cloth and ran, ran with all his might, he was panting, he heard yelling and people behind him. He would keep running, he would not stop until he got to his destination, he was a fast runner from stealing. Once upon a time he may of had many morals, now many of those were gone. He looked behind, there they were, guards and one angry merchant. He was panting now, had he ran that far before? He saw his families "home." In reality it was a tent in a gap between two buildings. They saw him, this was bad, before he had time to figure out a better strategy he ran into the "home." Instantly, Mary saw the silk.
"Walter-." She started to say.
"Shhh." He replied.
He carefully adjusted his stance, reached down at grabbed a small knife they all shared for defense. A single guard came in, but Walter was already hiding, he looked around. No Walter, that was because Walter had slipped out. The guard finally left, without saying a word. After a few minutes of Walter hiding right behind a merchant stall. He carefully snuck back in. Life was a bit easier from that day on, but not much. That is, until Walter was twenty one, still loyal to his family. Until one day Walter had grabbed bread that was left on the ground. It was a big loaf, could feed them for a few days in fact, this of course was a fairly stupid idea, but Walter did not think of this, being excited that he for once struggle might be a bit easier. His mother was now dead, she had been old to begin with, but it's hard to live a life of stealing and poverty when old. Walter walked over to the tent, they had kept that same hideout since the first day. He waited in the tent for a few minutes for Mary to come. She came with a single apple, stolen he assumed, looked too good to be bought. When he showed her they were both ecstatic, they split it, and only had a bit, but they hadn't had fun like this since they were young. The next day Mary came with a cough. The next day the cough got worse. The next day Walter watched over her all day. She was clearly ill. He'd get a doctor, he'd do anything, he'd give his own life, but he had nothing, nothing to give to keep her, and you can't steal a doctor. Three days after that, when Walter felt as if he may starve, but kept watching her Mary died, food poisoning, she may of been able to survive without a doctor if she had of been in a better condition with food, water and rest, but they couldn't do that. After that day Walter swore he'd get her back, it was his fault and he wasn't going to just let her die. He'd bring her back, somehow. So he got his little food, a small bit of water, and a bag with the tent in it, which he would use to sleep on, and he head off, to a new, better town. He didn't know where he was going, all he knew was he would get Mary back, whatever it took. Even though any educated person knew this was a guaranteed impossibility. Walter would keep going, he was almost insane from everything he'd gone through, but not quite. He still could come back from this, but that possibility was slim. The thing that had truly started this 'adventure.' Was that it was his fault, his fault his sister was dead... his fault. That haunted him. He'd get the Cloud Monks to bring her back, he would, he must, and if they didn't agree. He'd learn himself. So he went out, to adventure to get Mary, and maybe learn some things for a better life on the way.
