Growing up in the mountains and forests of the North, Gregor Kreiksson, eldest of three, was born first in one of the border villages, on the edge of Citadel territory, in Skjoldier. When word of the Witch Queen's army approached his village, Kreik, Gregor's father, made the decision to leave his roots, and bring his family to live in the wildlands of Skjoldier. Once in the wilderness, Gregor, 16 at this point, lost his younger brother to wolves, and his mother to starvation. In desperation Gregor, his father, and sister, travelled to the mountains on the northern coast of Skjoldier, where they had heard rumors of ranger activity. For weeks they searched, grew closer to death, yet to no avail. None could be found. After his father grew sick of searching, he planned to leave the search, and find a near city to restart his life in. Gregor's sister decided to join him, and it was then that Gregor found himself alone.
For months, Gregor survived off of the berries he could find in bushes, and the occasional bird or squirrel that would come too close to him. After another year, Gregor had become proficient in making tools for himself from his surroundings; a spear from a broken branch; a sharp knife carved of an animal’s bone; and eventually, a bow, quickly becoming Gregor’s most prized possession.

As Gregor steps off the cargo ship aboard which he hitched a ride, he goes to the market to buy some supplies. While entering, a well dressed portly man walks to Gregor, and says “Welcome to the City Market! What brings you here on this fine day?” Recoiling from the man’s exclamation, Gregor mutters “Oh, you know, just grabbing some food, and then continuing on my way.”
