Maengol was born into the world as a commoner, but was trained in combat from the age he could pick up a dagger. His parents grew up in the Lennox clan of the Warhawkes. He was very talented in combat, so much so that his parents decided to cut his education for his combat training, leaving him with basic education. He was able to train in all kinds of combat, but is most proficient is with Estocs, Halberds, and Roundshields. His view of magic is resultant of his education; he sees mages as power-hungry and evil. The worst kind of magic is voidal magic according to him. His parents cared about him very much, and spoiled him as much as possible. Despite this, he still grew up with a strong work and training ethic, using time he should be relaxing to train.
All Warhawkes are taught combat from a young age
The Lennox clan in particular is not fond of magic, he was taught it by the patriarch of the clan

She begins, then pauses to study their face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a chair, “Where do you come from? What do you hope to make of yourself?”
