In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: respect shared control, RP is collaborative storytelling not winning a game and don’t decide outcomes for other characters.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: it creates unfair advantages and it destroys immersion

Roleplay Scenario:

Long before the tent was ever raised in the swamp, before the candle learned to burn without warmth, there had been a village at the water’s edge—half-sunk even then, its wooden walkways sagging into dark, patient mud.

No one agreed on when the dreams began.

Some said it started with a fever that passed from house to house without leaving marks. Others claimed it came after a fisherman dragged something up in his net that should have stayed below. Most simply remembered the nights—thick, airless, and filled with the same quiet image pressing into every sleeper’s mind.

A shape. Waiting.

At first, the dreams were harmless. Vague. Forgettable. But they lingered longer with each passing night. Faces began to turn toward the swamp without knowing why. People paused mid-sentence, distracted by something just beyond hearing. A few wandered too far into the reeds and did not return.

The village did not panic. Not immediately. It adjusted, as people do. Doors were barred. Lamps were left burning. Children were told not to listen if they heard their names called from the water.

It didn’t help.

Because the dreams changed.

They stopped showing the shape.

They began showing the dreamers.

Not as they were—but as they would be, standing at the edge of the black water, speaking words they had never learned, offering something they did not remember giving.

By then, she had already arrived.

No one saw her come into the village. One day there was simply a tent at the edge of the marsh, where the ground dipped low and the fog never quite lifted. The cloth was pale and always damp, though it never rained directly on it.

She did not call herself anything.

But people went to her.

One by one, at first. Then in pairs. Then in quiet, desperate lines that formed at dusk and dissolved before morning. Those who entered always came back out—changed in ways that were difficult to name. Calmer, some said. Relieved.

Others said emptier.

She never gave warnings. Never told anyone to leave. She only listened. Asked questions in that soft, doubled voice. Questions that seemed to reach past what was said and settle somewhere deeper.

And always, always, she asked about the dreams.

It took time before anyone noticed the pattern.

Those who spoke to her stopped resisting.

They no longer barred their doors. No longer avoided the swamp. When they dreamed, they did not wake in fear—they leaned into it. Followed it.

Walked.

The first to vanish after visiting her was a hunter. Then a mother. Then three brothers who had sworn to keep each other from going near the water.

Each disappearance made the village quieter.

Smaller.

Eventually, someone tried to burn the tent.

The fire would not catch.

The cloth blackened, curled, and then smoothed itself as though it had never been touched. The woman inside did not come out. The next morning, the person who had lit the flame walked into the swamp before anyone could stop them.

After that, no one tried again.

Seasons passed, though the village could no longer agree how many. Fewer lights burned at night. Fewer voices carried over the water. The dreams no longer needed to come every night—they had already taken root.

And beneath it all, something waited.

Not in the water, exactly.

Not in the earth.

But close enough to both that the boundary had begun to thin.

The woman in the tent was not its master.

Nor its servant.

She was something else—something that listened at the edge of its awareness and, in turn, made others easier to hear.

A door, perhaps.

Or the memory of one.

By the time the last few villagers understood, it was too late to leave. Those who tried found themselves turned around in the reeds, walking in circles until the path led them back to the same pale tent.

Back to her.

Back to the questions.

Years later—or perhaps only days, depending on how the dreams were counted—a new figure would step through the damp flap of that same tent, drawn by something they could not name.

And she would already be waiting.

Not because she knew them.

But because something else had started to learn their shape.
