In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: To avoid power gaming in an RP setting, I feel like you have to be a bit more deliberate in the way you game. Gaming sometimes can be a more autopilot kind of activity, but RP is sotry telling, its different. You have to intentional with the way you are thinking and acting in scenarios. I think a lot about the good books and bad books I've read and draw inspo in that way- in the books i didnt like, I felt like I was being coddled or told what thoughts and opinions to form by the author. In a good book, I was being immersed into the character, and learning and acting with them. I came to knowledge as the main character was- these are the books that suck you in. In RP, you can achieve that same "book high" by being deliberate. What does your character know. What can they do? What can't they do that they would like to do- latch onto that and let that direct your next actions or be your purpose for your next engagement. I dont think of RP as a normal video game where they goal is to just win- rather its to try and live out those best books. I think a good RP steward can also gently discourage powergaming without coming out of character in the social interactions they have too, which benefits those around them/the environment, with their in character reactions, communication, and actions. That collaborative effort can also keep you from accidentally getting into a mindset that is bordering powergaming.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Metagaming reminds me a bit of spoilers in real life, and for me then also brings up the concept of treat others how they would like to be treated- the respectful way to engage in a group story to me means, "no spoilers" aka "no metagaming!" As a long time fantasy and sci-fi enjoyer, this is a foundational way of thinking- I wouldn't want my story spoiled, and so I wouldn't spoil it for others. I think too it creates imbalances that throw off those trying to engage- plus, it takes the enjoyment out! I think if I were presented with someone attempting to engage in metagaming, I would just politely redirect and remind that the best experience in an RP situation for me is to not have outside/IRL influences.

Character Name: Moro Menthiel
Character Race: Wood Elf
Character Gender: Female
Character Age: 30
Physical Description: Moro is a tall wood elf standing right at 6' with waist length light brown hair and eyes that in between green-blue-grey color, in light green robes
Roleplay Scenario:

Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

Example: Moro approaches the hag, studying her closely and trying to gauge the experience she believes this woman has with what she has heard, and wants to believe to be true. She pulls out the chair across from the hag, sitting delicately on the edge and giving the tea on the table a withering look.

"I've been seeking you out" Moro says evenly, with a steady a cadence as she is capable in this moment. "I've traveled far from my woods. My people have been battling hard against the rotting disease thats been taking our trees one by one, faster now each passing season. They look to me with hope- after all I've spent a lifetime in the art of leaves and fungi. I should have the knowledge needed to stop this rot. Yet... " Moro pauses

"Ahh, admitting a gap in knowledge is not weakness, elf" the Hag drawls "say what it is you came here to ask."

Moro takes a steading breath. "Moon Moss. It exists. I have heard you know how to cultivate it. I have chased myth for months now but I know you hold the secret. You must teach me, I need this knowledge."

Moro holds the hags eyes with hers. She also holds her breath.

"Very well Moro Menthiel. Yes, I know you. I know of your triumphs and your ego in the ways of the wild things that grow. I will teach you. But first," the Hag pauses. "You will do something for me"
