Willyan went with his father, but he threw him onto the mountain path and left without looking back. After an intense afternoon and cold night, fleeing from monsters and animals, he encounters Ronan Sparks, who hears the cries and runs after him, saving Willyan. Explaining what had happened up to that point to Ronan, who, having a good heart despite being a rogue, adopts him as his son. Willyan spends time being trained to be a rogue.

They duck into one of the shacks, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the small room, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town?" She begins, then pauses to study their face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a chair, “Where do you come from? What do you hope to make of yourself?”
Willyan sits down and replies, "I come from a place where air is scarce." He pauses, looks around, and then back at the witch, "I plan to have a better life here." Then he asks, "And you, what are your intentions?" he says, crossing his arms.
