This is a greeting that has not been used in our family for a long time, but it feels right to use it now. A few of you have already heard the news, mostly those who were old enough to have known her. For the younger generation of Vourkehardts, this may be the first time you are hearing it.

My sister, Vanya Vourkehardt, has passed away peacefully in her sleep.

I send this message so the younger members of our family may know of her and learn her name, and in hope that my siblings—those still living but scattered across the world—will hear this and come home.

To family and friends, please come to Idunia, to the keep of Ardrossil. Many of you didn’t get the chance to know her well, or to share a memory, or a laugh, or a drink with her. But I would still like you there. We will light a bonfire and return her body to the flames, so the embers of her being may rise to the Seven Skies and join the stars of our kin. And to memorialize her, I will speak of my sister, of who she was, who she became, and what she would wish for us all so that she will never be forgotten.

Afterwards, we shall do what any family does when faced with a loss. Grieve.

Far from a test of mettle, it acts as an almost superstitious test of character meant to predict and guide a Vourkehardt’s future. This custom requires the young Vourkehardt to only stand and wait, while the family head draws forth three foals - one from each line of the Legacy Steeds. Their reigns are untied and they’re set free to wander. Whichever steed approaches the young Vourkehardt first is declared theres, and thus the line they ride beneath.

Blood welled within Anruthion’s throat. He’d never liked the taste of it. It woke him up, and yet smothered him in its cloying, metallic manner. Pain, ran through him, yet it was… distant. He supposed that was what it was like to die. To have everything simply… shut down, the agony distant as his mind made him accept what was coming. Much like blood, that too was cloying. It soothed him, it told him everything was going to be alright, and it was time to simply rest…

Yet it was the screaming of the young woman he had been teaching that brought him forward into the world once more. The woman he had brought along on patrol- endangered, when that Werebeast came barrelling out to attack her. It wasn’t even a fully conscious action, as Anruthion gripped the spike of his broken morningstar, the bloodied and ruined man stumbling to his feet one last time.

The beast turned, expecting its fallen prey. It met only the broken and determined form of a man, desperate to save the child. He swung. The spike gleamed in the early morning light, aimed right for the beast’s ear-

And as darkness crowded his vision, and his body fell, he’d never truly know if he saved her or not.

As the night grew cold, did Anneliese Vourkehardt grow still. Having kept herself buried in her chambers for years past, with only short visits into the outside world, did her mind grow restless, yearning for freedom.

Freedom of what? Freedom to live? Or the freedom of death? Anne knew naught, but she knew it was her last day. 

Her health waned. Her body, once strong, grew tired. Every movement accompanied with an ache, a machine left untreated. Her mind, once sharp, now dulling once more.

She spent her last day out of her room, steps slow, as a braid amassing eleven-feet dangled from her head, dragging along the ground. Anne had never cut it, not once. She never would. 

It was a symbol, a token, to remember her ancestors, her parents, who passed away long ago.

It carried within its weaves the memories of her father, bright and sunny, and her mother, clouded, unpredictable as a wave. Their life. And their death.

It held first-greetings, Ani meeting Baldric for the very first time in Reinmar. Meeting Wernher, meeting Valeska.

Horrors woven in, Stein’s body burning, charred, fleshy smoke billowing above the crowd. Eduard’s head, rolling off the gallow in a heap of torn muscle.

The braid contained heartbreak, when her beloved betrayed her over, and over, and over again. Weakness, as she forgave. Over. and Over. and Over again.

Weight, of sunken shoulders, as she failed. In being a wife, in being a mother, in being a sister and a daughter.

Over.

And over.

And over again.

The braid grew longer, intertwined with the fate of a life lived in sorrows and shadows, in haunts and confusion, as her mind took a toll, rotting inside her head.

Gray strands appeared. Her fiery locks stained with dull hues. It was as her youth began to wrinkle, did she reflect.

Memories, not nightmares, not horrors…

Her wedding day. The happiest day of her life.

The day her children were born. A new purpose bestowed.

Talking with her sister. Every word was remembered.

Dean. The man she should've married.

Meeting her grandchildren. A sign that Anneliese could rest easy. A finality that she was no longer alone.

She spent that day speaking to her son, cradling his face, observing his ashen hues a final time. Her beautiful son, now grown into man, scars blemishing his skin. 

She spent that day further in Agrenost, speaking briefly with her beloved sister. Briefly, only briefly. 

Finally, she spent that evening in the presence of faces, new and old, at a small dinner. Her final fast had come to an end. Anne had a slice of pie, the last thing to ever grace her tongue.

It was odd to sit there, lonely in the knowledge that she would be faded away by sunrise. But Anne sat, and smiled, enjoying the lasting cacophony of small talk. It was simple. Peaceful. 

Her steps thereafter carried her back to Caladras. She gazed upon the castle, dragging a pallid hand across the grooves of the stone as she neared the gate. Anne entered, taking graceful, fluid steps to her chambers. She then painted the hours away, until her wrist could no longer bless the canvas.

She changed to her nightdress, laying down, hands asleep on her stomach as that braid of hers coiled around her arm.

A breath was taken, calm, slow.

Anneliese rested, staring up at her cold, shadowed ceiling. Her eyes went to a close, and for once,

Everything went quiet.

In the embrace of duty and the passage of time, I, Elerríon Saoren Seregon, humbly pen this missive to convey a rather monumental  decision that has weighed heavily upon my heart and conscience. It is with a blend of nostalgia, gratitude, and profound trust that I hereby declare my abdication from the titled holdings of Caladras and as Lord of Caladras, and with it, the mantle of leadership that encompasses House Seregon.

The echoes of history reverberate far beyond these stone walls, each telling its own tale through shared endeavors, challenges, and triumphs that have defined my life and this community. Through the turning of seasons and the forging of bonds, we have thrived as a united House under the guiding hand of the Exilic Kingdom. Yet, as the river of time courses unyielding, it demands recognition of its inexorable flow.

To this end, I have pondered long upon the legacy of our House and the torch that lights our way into the future. In the realm of inevitability, I have found solace in the knowledge that the essence of Caladras, its spirit and resilience, shall persist in capable hands. Music was provided by a surprisingly cordial host of demons and skeletons.
