    UNIFORM

Every fresh recruit is issued a pristine set of armor and weapons, paid for by the Confederation. The recruit will learn how to clean and use it, for it will be the only time armor is issued for free by the Legion. Initiates are issued a gambeson to wear underneath their chainmail. They are also equipped with plate pauldrons and mittens and greaves. To top it all off, a surcoat with the colors of the Confederation signifies the soldier’s allegiance.

To defend themselves aspiring legionnaires are issued with a wide variety of equipment. As one progresses through the ranks more state-issued weapons become available. Aspirants are however only issued one arming sword and shield bearing the colors of the Confederation. Once the aspirant passes their basic training, the halberd is then issued which becomes a staple weapon for the newly minted footman.

As the soldier progresses in rank, the uniform becomes much more plated and decorative, proudly displaying the many campaigns and awards achieved over a long career.

Captain Volker Hound of Petrus, circa 1513, before declaring Petrus for the Schismatics.

    CULTURE & TRADITIONS

The Legion of Saint Godwin is made up of men hailing from many cultures. There are those of the Petran peasantry speaking mostly only Noufeille Petran or the odd Waldenian sheep herder from the Langkette pass. They may not have been raised the same or speak the same language, but through the Legion, these men and women of different cultures are united and transformed. They owe allegiance not to Petra or Aaun, but to the Heartlands.

LEGIONNAIRES SALUTE - A remnant of the Imperial times. Before even the Novellen Empire, the legionnaires of the Empires saluted by clenching their right hand and placing it over their left chest. This tradition has been carried on for hundreds of years and is continued in the Legion of Saint Godwin.

A LIFE HONORED - After the passing of active duty personnel or a veteran of the Legion, the Legionnaires are expected to host a gathering after the funeral, where they sit at the table and say a prayer for the one who passed. As well as reminisce on memories of the deceased.

THE ARMORING CEREMONY - Following the completion of the Legion’s initiation, classes of Aspirants undergo group ceremony to purify themselves as they are outfitted with their armor. A deeply religious process, involving incense, holy water, and oaths of allegiance.

ROYAL MILITARY ACADEMY - As to best prepare newfound soldiers in their imminent duties, the Legion offers extensive programming for initiates, by way of the pen, sword, and artillery. Initiates enrolled in the Academy may expect tutelage in the matters of the Confederation’s history, its diversity between its constituent Kingdoms of Aaun and Petra, weapons mastery, alchemical combatry, and command of the artillery, among other things.

LORD MARSHAL DIRECTIVE - LEGION OF SAINT GODWIN

It has come to my attention that there was an attack by a band of trolls, directed at the Margravate of Marignan. There have been reports from the von Theonus family that the trolls are located in a nearby lair.

Later, the partisans of Marignan also discovered an interesting report, that there was rising trouble in the north, located near the east of Kretzen. Supposedly there is a specific threat which may harm trade between the Heartlander Confederation and Reinmar, a trusted ally to us Heartlanders.

It is time my Legionnaires, to show what the Legion of Saint Godwin is capable of. I will be meeting with Aurel von Theonus, the Margrave of Marignan, to discuss further. Once decided, we will spring into action. Investigating the matter that has threatened trade aswell as eliminating those wretched trolls.

Await further instructions. Remember, show them your wrath, but leave room for the wrath of God.

    STRIKE WITH A SURE HAND,
    HIS EXCELLENCY, Wilhelm von Wittenbach,

Lord Marshal of the Legion of St. Godwin

  3. Godric von Theonus reads the missive. His face contorting in all forms of anger before a moment of respite hit him. He shook his head and looked down as he rose from his seated position.

"To me this is a simple hatred showing its teeth that's been there since our arrival in the Petra. Towards not only Petra, but the von Theonus itself. They'd seemed rather jealous for a long time before their departure." He said to his family before turning around and ominously looking out the window as he spoke.

"It's our responsibility to look at the bright side, imagine what those imbeciles would've done by now had they still resided here?" he rose a glass.

"To Ghorm." he held a brief moment of silence, before taking a swig and shouting out the window across to the land of stupidity where Stassion resides.

"You'll only ever be a thorn in someone's side. Not good leaders, not even good allies, not anything. Just a self righteous and arrogant cancer that will be removed everywhere you lay claim."
he shouted out that window, before returning to his slumber.

    RESPONSIBILITIES & OBLIGATIONS

Below is an informational guide of what members of the Riverguard are expected to do while both on duty and off-duty, in order of importance.

Article I: The Obligation to Defend
All members of the Riverguard swore an oath, this means they must defend the Petra at all times, even if facing death. Upon seeing danger within the Petra, the Riverguard must always interfere and help, regardless if they are On Duty or not.

    Article II: Obeying Orders
The Riverguard must obey their higher ranks. Suggestions are always welcome but at the end of the day its what the highest rank says in the heat of battle that the Riverguard must do. In situations of high pressure there must be some form of order. The higher rank provides it. If there is a repeat offender that does not follow orders, there will be consequences depending on severity.

    Article III: Uniforms
Uniforms are to be worn when on duty at all times, however the wearer may decide whether to wear their helmet or not. The uniform must coincide with rank. Any members caught with the wrong uniform will be given one warning and any incidents after will involve immediate accusations of impersonating a higher rank.

Article IV: Pay and Resource Gathering
Anyone willing to earn extra mina may gather resources. Gathering resources is a necessity in the Riverguard, as preparing for possible war is expensive. There will be a list posted outside of the room where the materials will be placed that tells the compensation for each item. Simply put the materials in your designated barrel and they will be replaced with “Coin of the Riverguard” which can be exchanged for mina any time in the in-house shop. Gathering supplies is not only a decent way to earn mina, but a reliable way to be looked at for promotion. The Riverguard is in constant need of: Leather, Iron, Copper, Netherite, Coal, etc.

    Article V: Armory
The armory is home to the Riverguard’s gear, everyone is given a locker that will have two sets of armor, two weapons, and two satchels of food that are satiating enough to be used in battle. This will be supplied by the riverguard which means it is NOT owned by the individuals. It is Riverguard property.

    • Upon Petra needing it, the Riverguard will be instructed when to take their items out of their locker to prepare for battle. This includes: 1 set of armor, 1 weapon, and 1 satchel of food.

    • The lockers are checked fairly often, and if there is armor missing from someone's locker that isn’t accounted for, there will be harsh repercussions. If the member can’t explain themselves, they will have one saint’s day to replace it.

    • If the items are not replaced by that time, this may result in being kicked out of the Riverguard

     Article VI: Expeditions
On average, there are about two major expeditions per year. In these outings, the highest ranking member is tasked with delegating orders should the operation turn violent. Riverguard are considered on duty during these times, and must be in uniform.

     Article VII: Room and Board
Every member of the Riverguard ranks is entitled to a room within the barracks, as long as the individual doesn’t have any other holdings in Petra. Should a member get holdings they will kindly be asked to vacate their room to free up space for someone else who needs it. These rooms are tax free however, relatively small.

Article VIII: The Right of Mistreatment

Every member is still a soul that deserves fair treatment. Any Riverguard who feel they have been wronged by a higher up may reserve the right to speak about it to the Generale or even the Ruler of the Petra at the time. It is heavily encouraged to do so and by law they will not be judged.

    Article IX: Notice of Absence
The Riverguard needs an active populace. In the event a Riverguard member hasn’t been seen for 2 years without notice, The Generale reserves the right to evict them from the premises and the Riverguard as a whole. These individuals will be seen as oath-breakers by the members of the Riverguard, regularly shamed for making a commitment they couldn’t uphold.

    Article X: Recruitment
The Riverguard is in constant need of people, each Riverguard will be urged to invite other into our ranks. Simply introduce the prospect to a higher rank for recruitment. This also is heavily considered during the promotion phase.

    Article XI: An Oath Fulfilled
In times of great service, Riverguards may retire their oath as it had been fulfilled to the best of their abilities. This is seen as an honor because to earn it involves years upon years of servitude. Upon this happening, it is customary to place an art piece of them within the Bastion, so their servitude and legacy will never be forgotten.

    Sigismund von Theonus,

    Recruit of The River Guard,

    Elector of The Round Table

  7. Alphonse de Astrea, Decurion of the Elysian Army reads the missive.

"Hmm, seems like it's being handled well." he nodded happily, after seeing the example of the Vanaris and their wonderfully lead Lunaran guard. He pauses, an uneasy look on his face.

"Royalty? I'd never considered myself that." He shrugs, before speaking to himself oncemore.

"The Lunaran guard doesn't need to protect me, but I'm damn sure I'll enjoy fighting by their side if it seems I need protecting." He nods, before placing the missive on his desk and leaning back, propping the back of his head on his hands as he started to rest his eyes.

  8. Alphonse sighs.

"Once again, the answer to all of this is simply, leaving. There's plenty of other nations to be in."

he then threw the paper as he continued to walk but he looked back at it after around five paces.

    "Also... Who.... Asked?"

he said with a slight chuckle as he continued on his merry way.

    A Warrior’s Death
    Absolon de Astrea

Oh, the sweet bliss of retirement, one that Absolon sought out in his thirty plus years of service in leading Elysium’s military force. Though it was always the man’s true calling.
After being a Head Ranger of the ranger’s of Elysium, the Marshal of Norland for a short time, and eventually the Lord Commander once Elysium gained its independence, he was doomed. Doomed to live a life that he both loved and hated, a place where the highs were the highest but the lows were unbearably low. Constantly bound by his addiction to military life.
As he got older, the idleness got to him after a short amount of time. The retirement he’d thought would be good ended up a retirement to a mind that eventually turned to madness.

Sitting there as his bones grew older to the point where he could barely move, his arms unable to hold a sword right, his knees so old that he needed a cane everywhere he went. The idleness forced him not to think about war but rather the loneliness he was feeling. The life he had failed to build because he was so focused on the military. He started to think about his wife passing, his daughter passing, his son being a mercenary. He eventually realized that he had none of his kin left, and only a few remnants of family members who couldn’t take his thoughts away from it.

War, that’s what it was, but what was it for? He had found that it was all for Elysium, though it never managed to fill the void in his heart after retirement, the feeling of having no one close to you was all too much to bear. Eventually he had set his own mind. He would die a Warrior’s death, and fall to not old age, but a death of fighting for what he always fought for. What use was he?: he thought. Laying there and dying of old age? Or taking the fight to them?

One day, the opportunity finally arose.

“Bandits! Bandits outside the gates! Three of them!” A woman had called out.

Absolon sat in his usual place in the tavern, drinking his days away. He looked around, not a guard in sight.

“Eh’ll take care of it.” He arose, unsheathing his sword. All the while knowing he would die.

Quickly, he walked outside the gates, ignoring the bell which would’ve called tons of guards there. He was met with three bandits. Absolon’s old form rose as he dropped his cane, raising his sword that had been so damaged from war it was unrecognizable to be Ursine’s Vengeance: The sword he’d used to gut plenty of men on the battlefield.

He made quick work of two of them, quickly slashing them across their body, though they weren’t dead yet. The last bandit to see him was simply too quick, Absolon’s old body unable to catch the parry he would’ve been able to had he been younger.

A dagger slashing through his chest, as he pulled the last bandit’s form into him, Absolon stabbed the bandit with Ursine’s vengeance, all the while looking into his eyes as he watched his life leave him. The other two bandits stabbed Absolon in the back while this was going on. All of their wounds were fatal, though they all weren’t dead yet. Absolon fell to the ground with three daggers impaled into him, alongside the bandits who he had bested, though he had been bested too.

He looked to the sky as the rain started to pour. A smile formed on his face as his life flashed before his eyes, he remembered the crucial parts he had forgotten from being so focused on the army. He saw his wife, Lola, his two daughters: Penny and Amicia, ready to accept him with open arms. He idly reached into the sky, gripping for them as tears fell from his eyes. Maybe this was the key to being happy, being reunited with his kids and wife.

A moment of innocence came from the bandits, as they all knew they were on their last breath too.

“Was it all worth it?” The bandit who first stabbed him asked, probably in his own version of life passing before his eyes.

“....Yes” Absolon answered. Though he didn’t know if it was directed to him. Happy after defending Elysium and his real sister Azriel one last time. After a few fatal minutes, his arm fell to the ground, his smile faded, and his tears dried as life slowly left his eyes. Along with the bandits he had bested.

  11. [!] Absolon reads the missive while enjoying a cup of fresh mead. Upon reading the end, the mead is spat out in a sudden rage of laughter. [!]

"Financial hardship! Meh pockets an' Elysian's pockets're doin jus' fine! An' they'll continue teh be jus' fine!"

He looks to the tavernfolk around him, shouting:

"Go down teh my shop by theh river. Speak teh me fer bulk prices on all yer combat equipment. As far as eht stands, theh prices are better than most, ef not all of theh lands of almaris. Theh blockade of theh ferrymen aint theh only highway robbery goin' on!"

  12. Absolon de Astrea reads over the missive placed on his desk rather quickly, he pinches the bridge of his nose as he rests in front of the fire. "Ah damn shame teh be defined by two mishappenin's." he shakes his head, going to tell a story to his new grandchildren that were so young they'd never understand. "Aye, theh rangers may ave' had ah couple ah hiccups ehn their term as military. Such as defendin' theh ambassador ah urguan or stoppin' varhelm from takin' theh magic mirror no one but us knew more abou' at theh time." He looks to Acadia and Anya as they babble in nothingness with the inability to comprehend what he was saying, he leans back in the chair, continuing his system of venting by starting another story. "Although, eh'll tell yeh what they rangers did do. We supported norlan' fer years in theh beginnin's of Almaris. All while theh rangers were fresh an' new. Durin' theh war with oren, we built ah wall fer ourselves in jus' ah month teh defend our own in theh time a massacre happened ehn Elysium. We continued teh battle it out an' try our best fer norland, workin' effortlessly day an' night teh protect our home. When theh time for warclaims 'appened. We made theh majority of Norland's rally, givin' in nothin' but our best fer Norland and theh place we were able teh call home. Maybe thin's woulda turned out different if theh past kings or keepers 'ad been around more teh pass theh influence beyond Varhelm." he sighs, reaching to his hot cocoa that he only took the pleasure of drinking sometimes. "Ah damn shame fer us teh be painted here an' stripped away fer our ability teh uphold theh law when what we ave' done heavily outweighs theh mistakes thah were made." he shrugs, slouching back in the chair oncemore as his rickety old spine releases a few cracks. "Thirty two years, servin' norland, and theh group I've worked tirelessly weth many others teh make an' maintain continues teh be discredited, no matter what we do our overwhelmin' good'll never outweigh theh miniscule bad. Theh people outside ah Norlan' thinkin things like this abou' us. What has theh world come to, what type ah water are all of theh people ah Almaris drinkin?" he shakes his head oncemore, his one eye closed in disappointment. He takes a moment to think in silence before standing up and giving his grandchildren a light kiss on the forehead, as they had fallen asleep while he said his story. He escapes the room quietly, closing the door with extreme care.

"for this one, he was executed, but i was there at the mob by the bell. they wanted to do things so vile to the captured as if their souls were as black as the void. it truely is shame that war brings that side out of people.  its clear that they did horrible things but if we are to stoop to their lows we are no better then then doesn't matter how strong or moral we are. when you catch pray you put them down as humanely and quickly as possible."

"Couldn't agree more, it's a shame that people stoop as low as to not simply behead, but alas. We didn't torture them, and they were put down humanely. Regardless of what people around the bell said. Those are the people who's family have died horrendously in this war, maybe take a second to understand why they have such harsh words. No matter how vile it is, there's some justification as to why they act this way. Let us be humane in our actions atleast, since words mean nothing without action."
