Marcus Vult was born an only child to two peasants, Mary and Ben Vult. They were very poor but Marcus loved to watch the knights ride out of the local castle to defend the land. He dreamed of someday becoming one of the holy knights and purging heretics from the land. One day the duke who lived in the castle called for all eligible men to come to the castle and try out for knighthood; Marcus had been waiting his whole life for this! When he started training it was clear, this boy was a natural at swordplay. Marcus soon climbed the ranks of knighthood and rose to the forefront of his battalion and headed the battles. They were a mighty crew, purging heretics and slaying sacarens from the land without remorse. But Marcus got too hasty, and ended up killing a woman and her baby in her arms. The castle never trained him for this. He was distraught. When his superiors found out about the deed he had done, they banished him from the land never to return. He traveled countless miles across mountains and plains. But in the horizon he found a land where no one would know of the thing he had done. A place where he could call home, and maybe even get a second chance at knighthood.
