  1. Peridot Carrington muses at a fireside somewhere in the world. He palms a tea cup, moving it about from hand to hand. ”The old papu, retired?” Peri had suspected that his family friend would be calling it quits. He lasted far longer than he had suspected.  The playwright speaks to nobody in particular, ”He was like the grandfather I never had. I am a mutt, but he gave me culture, affirmation in this city. There was a reason that baba found this man a friend and I a family member. Without his guidance, I do not know how surefooted I would have felt during my hay-day. A tempering, controlled flame in the chaos of life. A hearth to return to, a sharp mind to dance with and a sage to consult to. This nation, he served well. My family, my father, he served just the same. I...” Peri pauses. He sets the tea cup down and lights a cigarette, ”I am happy for the old papu, for he can indulge once more in the leisure of life and of free thought.” The playwright sets down to write a letter to the Basridi sage, to make time for a match of the King’s Game.

    To whom it may concern,

The lovely burgheress Madame Maria Augustina de Mariotti has seen fit to join in holy matrimony with the artist Master Peridot B. Carrington. In doing so, the Madame Mariotti will assume the surname of Carrington. The lovely couple has designated the wedding day to occur in this Saint’s Week. The couple invites all to attend their union at The Basilica of the Final Revelation in Helena. All citizens of the Ruby City, Helena, are invited to attend this grand occasion. The after-party will be held at the Carrington Manor, where drinks and entertainment will be provided.

  3. To the voters of the Empire,

It is my wish that our constitution and our voices are upheld in parliament. Though briefly, I did serve in our House of Commons. The game of politics is in a league of its own and not all, no matter charisma nor promise, are cut out for such a field. It is a noble and honorable profession to be a parliamentarian. You require dignity, you require drive, you require patience and intellect. You must put the needs of the people above your own, above your party. The former House of Commons was dominated by toxic verbal warfare between the two parties. I have high hopes that the new generation of independently run candidates will bring about a new age of cordiality and actual policy production.

With this in mind, I, Peridot Carrington, as a representative of the Company of Thespians and Revelers, as a representative of the Imperial Association of Performing Arts, and as a representative of the Lucky Lotus Casino endorse the following candidates. My endorsement also reflects the stance of the governing boards of these aforementioned organizations.

I implore all who will listen, or rather read, to vote for these three candidates.

    Candidate 1: Farooq Gray

Farooq Gray is the Solicitor-General of the Imperial Constabulary. He is a master of the law, of justice. He is a person who, for the long ten years that I’ve known him, has been adamant in putting his community, his country, affront his own ambitions. Further, having served under Farooq, I know that he will maintain a level head and seek to produce a policy that will benefit our great people.

    Candidate 2: Jonah Stahl-Elendil

Jonah is a long-time parliamentarian. Unlike those of the past generations though, unlike his former peers, Jonah truly cares for the immaculate status of our great representative system. He is the steadfast face of the Josephite vision and, despite the lack of a List System, will serve to advance the interests of that organization without the shackles of partisan bickering. Jonah will fight for the equality of man, for the representation of all people no matter their standing.

    Candidate 3: George Galbraith

Grey, formally referred to as George, is the epitome of a city man. The Galbraith has served well in the municipal office and, ever since his arrival in the city, has been a servant of its streets, of its people. Without the kind-hearted nature of George, I fear that this House would be lacking in humility and dignity.

    VOTE FOR FAROOQ GRAY

    VOTE FOR JONAH STAHL-ELENDIL

    VOTE FOR GEORGE GALBRAITH

    You are hereby invited…

To a party like none other! The former, defunct Helena Gambling House has been completely remodeled by the owners of Carrington Games Inc., Peridot Carrington and Kinsrell Commandore. The old wooden place has been converted into an exclusive club, adorned in fine quartz pillars and immaculate onyx walls.

Engage in the NOBLE SIN of gambling. Test your luck at the roulette table or with the dice, while you enjoy a series of never before seen performances on the stage. There will be drinks, there will be beautiful people, and there will be debauchery. Whether or not you win or lose at the tables, you will bring home the most exciting memories to grace your time on this strange plane.

While you gamble and drink to your heart’s content, set your ears and eyes to the stage! The famed romantic and artistic master Peridot Carrington shall give forth a speech of the evening and divest well-wishes upon the crowd. There will be a large set of performers ranging from J. Ba’as with Rhenyari Rhythmic Poetry to Marlowe Browe with standup comedy. Further, the in-house violinist Asra shall be leading our quartet in musical ambiance.

Whether you are a gambler or not, you must come to this party. There will be plenty of music, drink, dancing, and laughter. Perhaps you will brush shoulders, and cards, with celebrities. Rumor has it the famed Simon Basrid will be in attendance. Perhaps you’ll share a drink or a game with the Archchancellor, that old and awe-inspiring sage. If not the Archchancellor, perhaps a Sultan. If not a celebrity, perhaps you will meet a lover or a drinking friend! The night is young and everlasting. Come and indulge, come and let go, come and live.

Entry for the normal gambler is 200 mina, whereas entry with access to the V.I.P. section costs 600 mina.

A gaggle of aristocratic monkeys gambling, 1769

The primary attraction of the night, of course, is our wide selection of gambling and game options. The attendees of our gala are compelled to, and rather should, engage in this noble sin. There is to be a variety of gambling based games. The cover may be steep, but you will have your chance to earn back your earnings and more at the tables with these games.

    The King’s Game

The King’s Game, also called Ugluk Blackjack, is a card-based affair. There is a dealer who distributes two cards to each player. Thusly, the player checks their card numbers. The goal of the match is to not break over 21 but to get as close as possible. Whoever finishes the round closest wins.

    Carrington Craps

Carrington Craps, sometimes referred to as Carrington Craps in the d’Arkent style, is a high stake dice-based game. Each player rolls a multi-sided dice. Usually, these dies take the form of five-hundred sided dies, however, some have been known to use lesser sides to save money. These people are cowards. The person with the highest number of wins and each other player pays the difference.

    Roulette Game

Often called spins by old Helenan gamblers, the roulette table involves a ball spinning amongst a variety of colored zones. Each player places a bet on the colored zone, with certain colors being worth higher values. A twenty-sided die is rolled by the dealer, forthwith they count down and then stop the ball at zero. The players collect their earnings.

  7. Peridot Carrington reclined in the office above Green Carrington’s old pawn shop. He scans Simon’s missive, “Tell the old sage I will produce whatever he desires.” The romantic, after thanking the old Basrid’s courier and tipping him, sits down to indulge in the play’s script. He shuffles page after page, enthralled in the expertly crafted saga. “A sorceress of the written word indeed...” he mutters. The purple clad master of arts puffs on his cigarette and takes out a quill. He writes a letter.

    @Urara

To the mysterious playwright La Fleur

I thank you for the obvious time and dedication set upon this page. You are a masterful wordsmith and, while I know not you nor this story, you’ve brought emotion to my eyes and a frog to my throat. At the Archchancellor’s wish, I will set this script to the stage and make sure it is remembered for generations. All, whether old and lonely Basridi grandfathers or prickly noble women, shall take this story with them to their dreams and feel for these characters as if they knew them, as if they were in that tower. You may live in lands afar or you may be long dead, but I invite you nonetheless to witness your play and offer instruction in my production of it, if you so wish. If not, then I hope you hear of its glory.

    Thank you dearly,

    Peridot B. Carrington

  8. Addressed to the President of the Commons and all representatives,

We’ve been assembled for a short year or so. But, I know in my gut what my choice must be. I have recently found success in my artistic pursuits, found myself as master of a livery company, and everso called by the duties placed upon me in the Ministry of Justice. For these reasons and more, I find myself unable to maintain commitment to the people of Oren and Helena, to represent them in the House of Commons. My service will always be to the ideals of the Josephite party and to a representative society, but this shall not be as a legislator. I call upon Majority Leader Elendil to raise a replacement for my seat and to accept my letter of resignation.

Forthwith, I forfeit the moniker of HCH and all honors associated with such duty. I extend my apologies not only to my fellow members of the House but also to the people who were inspired by my candidacy. I will continue to serve. I know, though, that I cannot fulfill these duties as properly as somebody entirely committed to the job.

    Signed,
    Peridot Beryl Carrington

The Merriment of Horenites, Equal. (P. Carrington 1769)

The common man walks down the street, he passes by a noblewoman and a man of the army. They struck in conversation, with each treating each other as equals. A gaggle of other unique, equally important, citizens gather about them and all enjoy a great bout of merriment. None treat each other with disrespect, and if they do it is in a manner of jest and met with equal jest! Even the dog eats well, so treated by his kindly masters. All are joined in a fraternal union. A brotherly union. A humanly union.

This is the ideal society. This is the future all should pursue, one in which the children of Horen are joined not in contempt or split by class, but instead lifted up and finding purpose within themselves. The arts flourish, there is just war, and all bear the burdens of society equally. Long are we from the time of the streltsy and other peasants, but the fight is not yet won. It may well never be won, but if that is true we should pursue it nonetheless. This society cannot be attained while we fling **** at one another like monkeys in the faraway jungles. This society cannot be attained when the common man feels ostracized from society because of their status when the common man is but a servant and not his own master! The Josephites seek to protect the rights of man and of man’s world. In our natural state, all men are equal and all are key instruments of this thing we call existence.

The party of the Josephites stands for the importance of the common person, affordable taxes, and the unalienable rights to life, liberty, and trial. The ideal society, a romantic and unattainable goal, must be strived for as we say, nonetheless. This pursuit will be achieved in the lifting of the welfare of each and every man. An ideal society, pervasive and impossible. But a just one, not so! This is what the Josephite platform seeks. To chip away at the unmoving stone of time and worldly oppression, to lighten the load on the common man and incorporate them more thoroughly with the purpose of our society! The Josephites, like Mister Elendil, have fought in our imperial campaigns to secure peace and safety for all. The Josephites, like Sir Terrence May, have fought in the parliament to oppose unjust rules and speedy criminal systems that would improperly convict the common man. The Josephites, like I, Peridot Carrington, wish to fight day in and day out for a Just Society. One in which all men can flourish and all men’s souls find purpose, fairness, and achievement.

    About this Worshipful Guild

The Imperial Association of the Performing Arts, established 1769, is a guild under the blanket administration of The Livery Company of Thespians and Revelers. The corporation is a cooperative assembly of verbalist artists. Formed by Peridot Beryl Carrington, the guild represents the interests of comedians, spoken word poets, musicians, actors, playwrights, and other performance-based artists. The guild organizes events for these performers to enlighten the masses, spread their so-saught after fame, and, of course, make money. The primary goal of this merry association is to bring entertainment to all the crowds of Oren, whether it be a high society gala or the local tavern.

    The Chamber of Romantics

The guild is governed in a loose manner, so as not to oppose the freedoms of its performers. Each man or woman is their own, the guild serves more as a means to hone their craft, create bonds with the rest of the performance community, and find jobs. Further, membership is accompanied by a license from the Company of Thespians and Revelers; a member of this guild is a member of that company as well and attains all rights that come with that status. Despite this loose structure, there are basic rankings amongst the group: the organization of this ranking is called the Chamber of Romantics. A key necessary to understanding our organization is that rights afforded to each rank are relatively fluid and ceremonial in nature. Each performer, regardless of their rank in the Chamber, is an individual and has the right to their pursue own activities without oversight.

Director-President: The Director-President is the chief amongst the Chamber of Romantics. They are charged with the overall management of the guild and organizing guild-wide events. Further, they are charged with the duty of the purse and are the primary representative to the Company of Thespians and Revelers. The Director-President acts as a manager for all artists and will represent them to potential clients.

Master: A master has proved themselves a capable performing artist. Whatever their form may be, they are recognized across the land as a titan of art. Within the guild, masters can induct official apprentices whom they can teach in the arts. Lesser Romantics can also take on students, but these students will not be immediately inducted as apprentices.

Journeyman: A journeyman has proved they are above instruction from a master. They can provide their own lessons and earn the right to independent representation. Journeymen are afforded the ability to organize their own events, incorporating other guild members as they please.

Apprentice: Usually young, the apprentice is just learning their craft. Apprentices are assigned to a master of their craft if there is one. If not, they are supervised by the Director-President when possible in their performances. Relatively, the apprentice has free reign on their journey to becoming a full-fledged artist as there is no true plan to make somebody into an artist.

    The Enlightened Endeavor: Stagecraft

While the guild does indeed field a wide array of sound-based performers, ranging from musicians to poets to comedians, the primary and recurring function of these artists is the pursuit of drama. Those who come onto the company as thespians will find themselves as the actors of a variety of plays. Further, the company seeks out talented playwrights and directors to aid in the creation and production of these spectacles. The entirety of the guild is incorporated, with musicians and comedians both being brought into the unifying art of stagecraft.

Associated Playwrights: Playwrights with associated status are those who primarily identify with the troupe itself. These playwrights can produce their entirely unique scripts and utilize the expert artists and thespians of the guild at their will. The guild, ultimately the Director-President, will act as a producer for the playwright’s plays and coordinate times, venues, and handle the marketing side of the art. These talented writers need to make money after all!

Associated Thespians: Actors with associated status are those thespians who run with the troupe and see regular employment in the many dramas set by the company.  Thespians of the guild rely on the playwrights (whom they can also be themselves, as artists can be both actor and writer) to provide them with plays and will hone their craft through such endeavors. Actors receive a paygrade from the Director-General via commission of the plays and an actor’s respected role within said play.

Vibius de Sola, Marshal of the Chivay Empire

    To whom it may concern,

I, Peridot Carrington, am seeking a handful of actors to partake in one of the great tragedies of our history. I took upon myself to complete this play, initially began so many years ago by Blessed Pontiff Lucien III. In the archive, I did discover a half-written draft and have brought this to the big stage. I require men, or women, who have a love for drama and the arts.

The open characters are as follows:

Vibius de Sola: Marshal of humanity. Caesar. Vibius has a decorated history serving the Chivays and the Empire. He has won many battles and proven himself a man of valor. He has respect from all of humanity for his marshal ability. The hero of the play, he leads a coup against the emperor Robert for alleged crimes against humanity. He falls to desperate actions to retain control of Petrus after overthrowing the Emperor.

Robert Chivay: The Emperor of Man! Robert has a grand duel with Vibius and then serves as a reminder for his crimes later on. He avoids capture and his flight serves to drive Vibius astray.

Blind Man: The blind beggar is present at the start and end of the play. He warns Vibius of his fate and serves to foreshadow the grave ending of the play.

Vibian Soldier: A side-character. The loyal warrior of the marshal. Throughout the play he protects and serves the hero; he will have a grand duel at the end of the affair.

Richard de Bar: A vassal of the de Savoie family. Richard is the leader of the Order of St. Amyas. The group has pledged their sword to Vibius, as they view Robert as an apostate emperor. He stands as a voice of piety against Vibius’ rule in the city.

Amyasman: A side-character. Amyasman serves as the soldier of Richard de Bar. (Can also play the Decterum Soldier)

Decterum Soldier: A side-character. A messenger of the House Carrion. The Decterum soldier is a messenger and brief character. (Can also play the Amyasman)

Caius de Sola: Caius rides to reinforce his father at the end of the play. He serves as an honorable foil to the distraught character that Vibius turns into.

Michael: A citizen of Petrus! Michael welcomes the Vibian host into the city and partakes in a protest against Vibius’ wroth actions.

John: A citizen of Petrus! John welcomes the Vibian host into the city and partakes in a protest against Vibius’ wroth actions.

Priest: The priest leads a protest against Vibius’ harsh actions as dictator.
