Order of the Enigma
Master Anogon approached the group of new students in the library. It was late, and the usual mage-lights that kept the room well lit had been sealed for the night. The group was reading by candle-light, mumbling quietly to one another as they discovered something of interest.
Master Anogon stopped before each student, and peeked at the books they were reading, before moving on to the next student and doing the same.
He finally reached the last student, sitting a little further from the rest, and checked her book. He dropped his invisibility, and startled the group of students, causing more than a couple to shriek in fright. Grabbing both the book, and the girl’s wrist, he dragged both away.
“What is your name, girl?”
The young girl, an Imperial, stuttered, not meeting his eye. “A-Alecia, s-sir. Alecia S-Silavana.”
“Why are you reading such an advanced book? This isn’t meant for novices. I know of adepts who barely understand the concepts in this book.”
Alecia fidgets, her robes too large for her slight frame. “T-the concepts in that b-book aren’t t-terribly difficult s-sir. I-I thought i-it’d be okay…”
Master Anogon stopped, and studied the girl, and then glanced at the book again. “Reality and Other Falsehoods, hm? You say this isn’t terribly difficult?”
Alecia fidgets again, twiddling her thumbs, still not meeting Master Anogon’s eyes. “N-No sir. R-Reality is j-just a s-s-series of p-perceptions, t-that we u-use to explain t-the world around u-u-us… O-or is t-that wrong?”
Master Anogon studies the girl for a moment longer. “No. That’s correct.” He hands her back the book. “If you find this simple, you might just be worth teaching personally. From tomorrow onwards, you will visit my personal chamber when I call for you, as soon as I call for you, without exceptions. While there, I will personally instruct you in the finer aspects of magic. Do you understand?”
Alecia was silent for a moment, before nodding, still not meeting Master Anogon’s eyes. “Y-yes, Master A-Anogon…”
Master Anogon nodded, and took several steps away, before Alecia spoke up. “May the Woodland Man grant you that which you seek.”
Master Anogon turned to look at the girl once more, and nodded. “And you as well, Alecia.”
