In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Using information outside of roleplay to their advantage. This allows a character to know things they shouldn’t and be able to make decisions to their own advantage. It makes the role play unfair and unrealistic.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Making your character unrealistically strong to win roleplay scenarios. If somebody powergames it’s an unfun experience for everyone as it breaks suspension of disbelief and is unfair to the person on the other side of things.

Njord had been born from the winds. Upon his birth a striking wind has struck upon his childhood hometown in the Empire of Renatus. Being close to the water, most days in the area had inclement weather, but that day was special as there was a forceful yet gentle attribute to the breeze. That’s when his mother decided to name him Njord. The Vindurs weren’t a particularly well-off family, Njords father was a flawed man who despite his attempts to help his family, failed in many attempts. He was a local blacksmith who did small repair on the locals weapons and farming tools, but was outclassed by the other competition in his town. Despite not showing this side of himself to his family, he was a drunk who would spend many nights in a tavern. Njords mother was a caring woman who spent a lot of her time teaching him moral values to make up for her own mistakes she made in the past. Njord wasn’t like the other highlander kids, he spent most of his younger years scavenging the books in the towns small library, as well as occasionally playing a lute for the local band. Njord was a happy go-lucky child, always smiling and talking with locals. He would self-educate himself during these younger years, however times were getting rougher, and his family had become too poor to even feed themselves. His parents decided that at the age of 12 they’d send him off with a local military group recruiting young men, in hopes that he would at least be able to eat.

During his time in the military camp Njord was put through heavy amounts of training, pushing his young body to its limits. However Njord kept on pushing past his own limits, hardening him and making him much stronger. The other kids in the military camp were much more fierce and well-off than he was, growing a disconnect from some of his colleagues. Those same kids would pick on the much weaker and frail kids at the military camp; seeing this made Njord upset and he would take it out on spars with them. Though he would consistently lose to these kids he kept sparring them, day after day, until eventually he was able to beat one of them. He learned from this that he could be one to defend the weak, however he couldn’t be weak himself. This would cause Njord to cause a change in himself becoming a much more calm, quiet, and serious person. He remembered his father used to do the same things and be considered a strong man among hi peers, so Njord replicated that. From there his skills in swordsmanship would grow exponentially, becoming a great fighter. During this he still kept up with his love for literature as a child, and read all that he could when his military group would come back with supplies from other villages. This would grow Njords passion for self-improvement and he would continue to push himself for years to come. Despite all this improvement, he wasn’t all that popular in the military group, only having a small group of friends that he wasn’t as close to as he could have been. He always had envy seeing all the other kids assimilating themselves well into the group, wondering why he couldn’t do so. He would continue to be in this military group up until he was 17 when he would move back with his parents. His parents were much different people when he came back, his father had switched careers to a baker and was very successful in the business. He became a much more happy man, gaining weight and always having a smile on his face. His mother also continued to move from her past joining his father in the bakery business. They also had another child while he was out there, whom they named Jojo. Njord was happy to see the faces of his parents again but they were not the family he used to remember. He stayed with them for 2 years, helping them out in their bakery, however there was just something missing there that he couldn’t quite realize; he was stagnant. Seeking freedom and a purpose he decides to move out at the age of 19 and adventure the land Arcas. Tears were exchanged, and as he takes one long look at his family waving him off, he gives off a slight sigh, the wind blowing heavy as he goes onwards to his travels.
