  1. Johann Ludovar tsks as he shook his head to his nephew's words. He loved his family deeply, and he had great hopes for his sister's son. But it seemed that the son learned only from his selfish father rather than his beloved sister.

disappointed and with heavy hurt he made his way to Vidaus, to speak with his sister before he will take a stance on the matter.

  3. Johann Ludovar  squinted reading the missive, he was not suprised, from his past experience as Justiciar with the Ruthern, that his brother in law's ego would not let him acknowledge mistakes, yet was glad to receive a partly, even if obviously biased, broader view of the occurances. He decided to send his appointed Jovenaar who was on standby to now actively investigate and get the true big picture. @tcs_tonsils_

The Kongzem of Haense recognizes the importance of family bonds and the wish to support those dear to us in the pursuit for love and marriage, even in times of war. Therefore, in order for Wilhelm Lucius to accompany his daughter, Amadae Ulyssa d’Arkent-Carrington, who is well accepted within our society for long in the upcoming events of Lifstala, the High Jusiticar recognizes the importance of the presence of family members on such an exciting season and issue this writ of safe passage into the Kognzem and Karosgrad so that he may be beside his daughter.

Wilhelm Lucius shall be permitted entry into the Kongzem unarmed and with no malicious intent, and in return the Brotherhood of Saint Karl nor the Knight’s Table shall hinder this passage, and all Haeseni subjects shall oblige him with the traditions of Haeseni hospitality until the end of the social season.

  5. Raijen Stars sat in his small office in his lonely manor after hearing the news. Another one has left the world... His once loved one, then a dear friend and buisness partner has passed from this world...

The cold air that always seemed to surround his quiet house seemed to be even more bothersome especially today.

How has times changed... The days they were all young and energetic, they all had their aspirations and dreams... He missed those days. Maybe he even regrets a little not pursuing what his heart wished for a little more when he still could... Maybe everything would have been different then. Maybe then his cold home would have been a bit more warm and lively, maybe then they would not die one by one sad and alone...

He would have paid all his fortune to see such future... but it is too late now.

"Goodbye, Dianna. I will never forget you. I am sorry I did not do more for you..."

He sighed, taking a few more seconds looking at the roof aimlessly before putting his hands on the table to use for aid to get up as he did not have the power he once had. He left his house for yet another day at work at the farm. Another day at the exact life he tried to run away from about forty years ago.

  6. Johann Ludovar read the first letter he received from his daughters throughly, the letter from the daughter he was more worried about after her visible protest and difficulty to leave for the journey.

While reading the letter his smile grew wider and wider, while he showed confidence, he was very warry if the expedition will even bear fruits as this tradition was never done before in the family, but this was way more than he ever imagined. The words of his daughter touched his heart, hearing how she both grew to accept herself and determine her future, he was of course excited to hear as she wished to follow his own footsteps but more than anything - he was glad to hear of her love for the family.

There was not a single thing in this world Johann cares more about than his family, and he struggled through his youth wishing his family would feel the same.

With this letter he felt he did a good job educating his children and building an enviroment his family would enjoy and like to stay in, unlike previous generations.

With that, he proudly went to start preparing for the return and coming of age ceremonies of his daughters.

An Open Letter for My Daughters

    From the Count of Otistadt

    4 1 6 E.S

    To my dear daughters,

Soon, in the following year, the two of you will reach the age of eighteen, marking your reach of adulthood. While a proper ceremony of a debutante will be held, I wish to pass on a dream I had when I was your age onto you. When I was seventeen years old I was lost, overwhelmed by society and responsibility. I could not see the man I was between the unending work I had to do, I could not see anything but that in fact. To become a better man, I decided I should go on a journey. Leave behind everything I knew, all the roles I was given, all the plans, all the ties. Just for a little while. I wanted to figure out who I was, what I wanted to do with my life, how can I become a better man? Sadly, the risks of leaving were too high and I decided I should not take this time to explore myself, a decision I regret to this day.

Hence, I would like to grant you this time to explore yourself now that you are reaching adulthood. Amicia Valerie and Adele Emma, I send you on a quest, travel the world, not as the eldest daughters of the count of Otistadt, but as yourselves. You shall depart from Haense to have time away from all the current ties you have, to have a clearer mind.

    During your traveling you shall answer three questions for me;

        I. Who Are You?

II. Who Do You Wish to Be?

III. What is the real pleasure in life?

Only when you return from your quest will you be considered as ready to officially reach adulthood.

  11. The count of Otistadt have just left the clinic when he heard of his great aunt's death.

His already pale face lost yet another shade. He waited a bit before showing his real emotion, staying strong beside his daughter.

When he finally got to his cold room in the top of the keep, Johann broke down. His only aunt who stayed with them, the only aunt who always lent a hand when he needed her... "Spasibo for everything... Vy will be remembered. Spasibo.." He muttered

  12. I did it, Father.

[!] The halls of the crypt of Otistadt

it was awfully quiet suddenly as Johann walked in his now County alone.

He was not used to this quiet anymore…

The keep was often full of children running around and screaming, guests coming in to party or just visit, or just Johann’s brain full of noises either planning his next step or just wordless screams that fill his skull.

He made his way to the crypt after all were asleep, tired of the party and excitement of the day, a candle lighting his way in one hand and flowers on the other.

Johann glanced to one side of the crypt, to the far end of the hall where his late wife’s memorial place was before turning to another place, closer to the entrance.

    ‘Robert Ludovar, Baron of Otistadt’

He glanced at the sign then at the urn where his father’s ashes were.

Johann kneeled as he put down the flowers and laid down the candle. His hands clasped together before his face, eyes closing, praying.

“I remember the day father, the day of Marie’s betrothal dinner.

She was furious and so were you.

You were furious at how you were demoted. You shouted that we need to go to these lengths to rise.

I think that is the day both me and Marie understood the weight of our situation. We both  gave our souls ever since… devoted ourselves to working hard.”

Johann looked at his father’s remains with a pained expression, he sat there in silence, remembering all those years. The silence in the keep when all his uncles and aunts left on their ways. The shouts of his father scolding them, the fear… the fear of losing everything.

Johann then glanced at the light of the candle. A tear forming in his eye.

“Ever since I… I detested you father. You left me with this curse and showed me love and support whenever you were the but…

    YOU WERE NEVER THERE!

You left us for years then came back and did almost nothing… I had to carry all of this… all of this pressure alone. I married a woman who kept abusing me, I worked until my body could not move anymore, I scolded those I love… I had to shoulder this all alone…

But I surpassed you father. I manage this family by love and not fear.

I dreamed of following your path as the chief detective but I did not stop and became the High Justiciar.

I made our family prosper, if by money or by number or by positions.

I made the foundation you and your brother founded actually work.

While during your time our house was demoted, during my time we were promoted. A double promotion at that!” He let out a little chuckle, still finding it hard to believe.

“Now… I guess I have only one more aspect left to surpass you in.”

Johann looked to the rooftop of the crypt, as if looking past it to the sky.

It was not a lie his body was aging way too fast. His hair graying by thirty, his face getting wrinkled and the sacks under his eyes visible by the day.

His body was failing him more and more, he was never strong but his body was growing weaker and weaker, it was getting harder to stand and walk for long.

Johann looked back down and sighed

“I might join you sooner than later, father…

I am not as strong as it seems. My body… It is failing me way too soon…

I am trying to hide it from the family, I don’t want them to worry but…

I don’t know how much longer I could shoulder everything.

But my children are my pride and joy and I trust them… I trust them to keep the family going when I am gone.”

Johann closed his eyes in one last prayer before getting up, cleaning the dust from his armor. A small smile growing on his face

“Don’t expect me too soon though. I might not be a fighter on the field but I am in any other way.

I will fight to live a bit longer, even if my body will not stand too much more.

I can handle it now, because now I know… I know there are people who love me and are waiting for me to come back home at the end of the day to a keep that is now full of life.

    Thank You Father.

    I hope you are proud.”

  16. CIVIL AND CRIMINAL TRIALS

(OR, A STUDY ON THE PRINCIPAL DIFFERENCES OF CIVIL AND CRIMINAL TRIALS)

    BY

    JOHANN FREDRICK LUDOVAR

    4th of Wzuvar and Byvca, 411 E.S.

    Introduction

The duties of a Jovenaar of Haense is to find the truth, punish wrongdoers, and settle legal disputes. When a matter is brought before them in the Aulic Court, it can be either a criminal matter - where someone is accused of breaking the law - or a civil matter, in which two Haeseni have a disagreement of law or honour. A Jovenaar must, in either case, ensure that justice is done. This missive published by the Office of the Justiciar will detail the differences of each.

    The Civil Trial

The civil trial is when citizens petition the Aulic Court to settle a dispute with another person, and thus does involve the question of crimes - listed in Chapter II of the Haurul Caezk, the Haeseni lawbook - but rather questions of wrongdoing and dishonour. Thus, the goal of civil trial is to either reach a compromise between the disputing parties, or find the wrongdoing and issue a remedy.

Consequently, a Jovenaar may issue an order for a wrongdoing citizen to do or not do something, pay compensation, or other kinds of recompense for an act of dishonour -- these are known as an action order. Typical cases where an action order is applicable are questions of nuisance, harassment, duelling, trade, contracts, broken oaths, and dishonour. For example, were a carpenter to contract a lumberjack for wood but refuse to pay the agreed price, the Aulic Court may force him to do so with an action order.

In other cases, an acknowledgment order may be granted in cases where the Aulic Court is called upon to find the truth in a dispute. For example, if the parentage of a child, and possible infidelity, were to be raised, a Jovenaar may investigate and issue an order as to who the child’s parents truly are.

During civil trials, the prosecutor would be the plaintiff, the one directly affected by the action, or a representative of them.

    The Criminal Trial

The second one is a criminal trial. Those will take place when one broke a law of the kingdom, listed on chapter II of the Haurul Caezk such crimes usually threaten either the sense or physical security of the kingdom and/or it’s people.

While in civil trials might now be as defined, in criminal trials the rules are set in stone and clear, a deed is attached to an existing crime description.

During those trials, even if, for example, one was attacked, the victim would not be the plaintiff and is not the one in right to prosecute, but the crown, assigning its own prosecutor on the trial, as going against the law was a crime against the nation itself.

For example, in the case previously mentioned, while one was attacked, he might be the direct victim of the crime, yet the action itself threatened the safety and sense of security of the citizens of the kingdom, and broke the law the crown itself has assented, hence going against its words and authority, making it a matter of the crown to take action and responsibility for.

    Conclusion

In conclusion, while criminal trial is a term used for crimes assented to in law and/or causing a threat to the nation in one way or another, while a civil trial refers to other birchs of laws of the nation that are not defined as laws, in which an outer intervention and mediation is needed between the involved parties.

In the preparation for a trial the jovenaar shall identify the type of trial that stands before him in order to have the right kind of trial and approach to the case presented to them.
