i just feel the need to say something as someone who took a course with a mummification and atypical burial unit...

cremation is extremely difficult without modern tools. in the past it was very hard to get temperatures high enough to cremate bones. hence, mass burials, where bodies would be placed on top of each other with thin layers of dirt separating them. mass burials werent usually "just throw them in the pit," there was a method to it. and bodies were burnt to stop the spread of disease, not to cremate.
