    THE SABARI LETTER

Penned by General Darius Sabari ‘The Colonel’

Greetings citizens of the Empire, if you’re reading this I have long since passed and the title of Empress and Emperor has transitioned towards Anne Augusta and Joseph and any cabinet members from the Reign of Peter the III has long since retired or passed on, though I had this letter commissioned to be published when times seemed dire for the Empire.

I have long known of the rising threat of the Inferni coming and dreaded the day your great years of strife will test you. Though not yet public I knew that this wasn’t the greater issue nor were the Nordlanders or the Ruberni warlords of the time as well as my peers did as I knew you were all well prepared. Our greatest threat would be ourselves. What is an Empire without faith in it’s institutions to guide them to a brighter tomorrow.  So we went to work and did what the Empire does best, uniting those willing to stand up against overwhelming odds to build these foundations you all will come to trust for and by the people in a time that any other ruler would attempt to force their will on their subjects in order to maintain order at the expense of freedom. Knowing that all our effort could very well be in vain and the end of our world had finally arrived even then holding our stance that this should be the way our new Empire will arise on the world stage unwilling to compromise. Though now as my life nears its end and a majority of my peers have now retired, I have finally been given a glimpse of what our future has in store for us and I can proudly speak for all my peers, when I say I am proud. We came a long way and while I and my peers were reaching the finish line, the future of our glorious city, the youth, were bright eyed and burning with passion looking towards the horizon. A passion that will far exceed any expectations that would be set upon the people of the Empire.

The Imperial State Army is a prime example of this, we went from a bunch of rag-tag soldiers living in tents to a fully uniformed army with discipline and numbers unheard of since the times of Emperor Godfrey. Though, without bandits or bureaucrats filled with racist ideologies and hatred within our ranks but with intelligent men willing to die for our country and its people no matter their heritage or race. Soldiers are provided free housing, medical treatments and an education. Something I envy the youth for, as I was never fully educated in my youth in Rubern and lost my dear young sister due the lack of infrastructure that we now provide to all men of the Empire.

Our city government gives every man and woman an opportunity to be heard equally within the eyes of the law. Giving justice to all no matter their social status. Something our very ancestors could not provide towards their people without a cost to the common man or a political assassination and, at times. risk a civil war. Now men argue with logic and empathy looking to create a better future for their fellow citizens and not only just their selves. Senators walk through the streets to speak to their constituents and ensure their opinions are heard. Allowing citizens to sit in their meetings so they may ensure that a fair trial.

The Stewards of Helena work diligently to maintain a fair market and work for housing to those unable to afford the cost of living within the city of Helena. Provided with employment so they too may thrive within our Empire. The Empire investing in local businesses such as Carrington Co. followed by the many that have since sprouted. This had led to our economy to boom since the times of early Helena where the roads were poorly built and unable to maintain such a large volume of people. The housing at times falling apart due to vacancy. Now in their place sits paved roads with sewage systems that are regularly maintained. The water supply has long since been so pure nobody worries of sickness anymore plaguing our youth. Houses filled with families that have sprouted many generations that will inhabit our world and remember our glorious city.

Helena is unlike anything I have ever seen before or imagined in my early years, and it’s existence shames every other nation in it’s progression towards the future. Making leaps so that life may soon become easy for the average person, free of all evil that plagues this world we all walk together on. And I must say, since the retirement of my peers and myself, the progression by the people of the Empire is nothing short of that better tomorrow we strive to create.

So citizens of the Empire, I leave you with this. Will you surrender yourself to invaders with ideals that plagued our past Empires, leaving everything we lost be for nothing, or will stand alongside your brothers and sisters no matter your differences in defence of our glorious Empire, paying each step backwards and each soul lost towards our cause to a better tomorrow twofold in kind. Look to your fellow man and ask them the same. Who will you be descendants of our ruby city? What will your life mean to the greater plan GOD has destined for us and will you walk alongside your fellow man in a quest to a better tomorrow?

  2. Joseph Leopold sat there, reading over the missive. His eyes would glance down towards his tabletop, moving to pen a response to the people of Providence.

"While the Pontiff's words are encouraging we cannot ignore that he is blind to the situation at hand. This man puts moralities brought up by years of strife at jeopardy. Imploring that these men we consider heroes would think otherwise of our actions. We were raised by these heroes, we know them too well for anyone else to use them against us and is another insult on top of the many. Your own subordinates act on their own accord by publicly publishing letters clearly meant to harm the image of the Empire while in the midst of your own sins coming to light. The cracks of your administration are starting to show, turning those attempting to cooperate away, while the people of the Empire consolidated under a common cause. I want to state clearly, that the people of Providence have not strayed from the path of righteousness. They've in fact brought up a moral code with them, and you're drowning in your own ego, unable to accept your own faults, that you turn your back on these people and publish such a tone deaf statement. Furthering the divide between faithful and the church. This statement only proves my suspicions that the road we're traveling will be a dark one and the people of the Empire will set a flame ablaze as they have done in the past. So we may prosper."

  3. Joseph Leopold sat in his office, reading over this very notice of The Red March. Setting the paper down, Joseph looked at his the portrait of his mother, Anne Augusta, hanging in his office.

"So we march. One more time, mother."

  4. You walk into the Immigration office of Helena where you are met with a posh young man, seated behind his desk. He looks at you with a friendly smile as you catch his attention. “Hello! Welcome to Providence! Care to write you name down so you can stay up to date with all the ongoing within the city?” He passes you a ledger filled to the brim with names. “Just sign your name there and you’re good to go!”

  5. Somewhere in the beaches of Sutica the Colonel Darius Sabari rest peacefully as the waves crash on the shore. At peace, happy he was able to grant Anne one more Tuvmas with her mother, Lorena Augusta, before she was able to grow up and turn into the woman he's so proud of. "This isn't the same girl who rush to her mother's side that day in tears. Rest well, Anne.." whispered Virgil DeNurem, once ward of Darius Sabari, knew the situation quite well.

    Journey Into Mystery: Deliverance

With the siege of Mt. Augustus repelled the Azogs march to Mirtok DeNurem’s base of operations. Having heard rumors of his return, the aged Maur’Azog couldn’t wait to see his old friend again and had detached with a few select Uruks from the main war band for this detour.

    “Welcome back, brother.”

“Mirtok DeNurem,” Smiled the robed figure as he approached his old friend. Long has it been since he’s seen that face. “You look intact.” He lowered his hood to reveal his warped face. His eyes now fully purple in the whites and his nose sunken into his skull. Tusk stabbing into the flesh of his face.

“The same can be done for you. Remove that foul taint that burdens your soul. You Azogs have done much for me. The least I can do for you, friend.”

“I thank you, DeNurem, but these are mine to carry for the journey is about to begin to the promised lands. This is the moment we’ve both known was coming..”

    “You mean you’re not staying?”

“Yub... To see the face of my friend and thank him for everything he has given me. I know you’re not one for goodbyes either.” he dryly chuckles, pulling out a piece of ink. Mushing the index on his palm onto his index finger.

“You had no reason to take in my brothers under your protection when they were shunned by their race. Yet you found it in your heart to call them your own and fight alongside them in the trenches of every battle we’ve fought together. And from there we found the meaning of community and family. There we found purpose and fate in a GOD. For we are cursed children of this GOD but under my guidance I will lead them to redemption in the eyes of this GOD which we call the spirits. This gave me meaning when I died in the nether. And for this, I bestow upon you three gifts in representation of the three Azogs you took in but first.”

“Mirtok DeNurem, I hereby bestow the honor of the name of Azog. Absolved of all past titles men have stained your name with hopes to diminish your accomplishments as they have done to our people in the past. Granting you the blessing of the spirits who had pushed us to glory and have destined your family to be reunited again. Rivaling only the Azogs in strength.” He raised his index finger, drawing a black cross upon the Hochmeister’s face.

The Orc looked down upon his friend, allowing the memories of their journey that has led to this very moment slip down his cheek. A silent tear rolled down the face of the withering Orc’s alligator skin. Yet the Hochmesiter remained resilient throughout all of this, showing no emotion as the Orc has. Though Maur’Azog knew by his silence, that he was afraid of showing the emotion that had hurt him in the past. But his silence spoke volumes to the Orc. This wasn’t an easy goodbye for the both of them. “This is the last time I see you, brother. Thank you for taking a chance on us.”

Maur’Azog gestures for three Orcs of his war band to bring forth a large ornate gold casket. “As for our three gifts.” The three Orcs moved and pulled a casket from the pile of loot the Orcish warband carried. A large golden warhammer in the center with locations of the DeNurems offsprings entrusted in the care of the Azogs when Castle GreyWynn fell. “I cared for them as if they were my own. Letting them go was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. Their place is alongside humans though and I found them respected quiet families to give them that. Find them and give them the same chance you gave us when you found us. Farewell, friend.”

    The Great Fire of Helena

    About 300 Years later...

    ...
    Thud!
    ...
    Thud!
    ...
    GASP

The child gasps for air, coughing out the smoke he’s inhaled in his sleep, “Mother I’m stuck help me!” he cried towards the doorway of his bedroom. Only to be met with no response but the crackling of the house coming nearer to collapsing on the young boy.

Slowly his vision faded into darkness, only hearing a voice to the side. “Come, son. The other two await you. Virgil.” A man spoke from his window sill, features obscured by the shadow his figure casted into the room with the sun’s ray shining brightly behind him. Slowly  he approached him; the orc from his dream he thought! Though without much choice he allowed himself to be taken by him up from the bed.

‘Other two? What? This is just a bad dream....’

    ‘Fate.’ Responded the man.

How did he know his name, this couldn’t just be a coincidence, he thought. Though as the figure carried him out of danger he found that his mind wasn’t on the vivid dream he had just experienced or the that his home was burning down.. It was on how this mad man with a thick beard was smoking a cigar through the black smoke of the burning house.

*A dusty old Orc sits on a rock, telling a story to any of those willing to listen.*

Days have passed since the Battle of the Sands. The Siege of Mount Augustus is underway and the Carrions face complete decimation by hands of the newly allied forces of The White Rose and Dwarves atop their last holdout. Urik’Azog has called a meeting atop of his grand temple to discuss their next move.

“They fight each other now, brother. Look at them, our allies align themselves with the people we wished to destroy and have pushed us off to the side in favor of them.” Urik’Azog snarled, looking off towards the siege of Mt. Augustus.

“Careful, brother....” said the hooded figure, staring into the flames of the brazzier. “Your anger will consume you. Think.” The hooded figure lowered his hood, revealing his horribly disfigured face. “The spirits granted us our vengeance at the Battle of the Sands against the Carrions. Now they grant us another opportunity. Can’t you see? The spirits never wanted us to destroy the home of these men as they did to ours many winters ago. If that Mountain Peak falls, the spirits will turn their back on us and the promised lands will forever be lost.”

“Isn’t this what we wanted? To completely wipe out those Carrion-scum who aligned themselves with bandits whenever tides of war aren’t in their favor. The nether has completely warped your sanity, brother.”

He chuckles dryly, turning his purple eyes over to him. “Brother, I see it far clearer than you will ever be able to. All our enemies have fallen and fear the horns of our war bands when we approach. We’ve accomplished all we’ve ever wanted, brother. The Ugluks bend their knee to an Azog Rex, something unthinkable when we were banished from the lands we rule now. The Kaxils, we feared them in our early years. Look at them, scattered and never to be heard of again. The Gorkils, our father clan, remained useless after years of attempts to recreate the facade of glory and honor Mogroka Gorkil sold them. But now our Clan’s name is spoken with fear by every single mortal on this continent. Even King Henry recognizes our power from the crypt he hides in, not even daring to show his face in the Battle of the Sands.”

Maur’Azog shifted his hand above the fire, “But our place isn’t here, as Kings covered in gold, it's in the promised lands. And it is time to depart, but not after settling the score with the Roses... Fairly this time. You know just as much as I do, staying here will only harm us and our hatred is the only thing holding us back from reaching that what was promised to us. Forgive the Crows. We’ve settled it.”

Urik simply exhaled, “You’ve lost your mind, brother. I hope you know what you’re proposing here..”

An Orc peon rushes into the courtroom, hastily rushing to kneel before Rex. “The Lurs are rebelling, my Rex! They claim you’ve reigned as a tyrant and wish to place a female Lur in your place!”

“A sign, brother. Our time is limited. These people cannot be saved, brother. Ours can.”

“What of our ‘allies’?” He rested back into his seat, looking over to Warchief Snuup’Azog. “They underestimate our ability to shift the tide of war. As they always do. Wulfgar though, he would never understand our motives.”

“None of them ever understood us to begin with.”

    “We silence them all now.”

“What’s meant to be is meant to be, so the story goes on

On and on and back and forth, the evolution’s absolute

With a sword in their hand and honor in their name

Wouldn’t hesitate if they had to kill, though they rather not

Forever been the elephant in the room

That everyone can’t wait to run and tell about
The head to the body of the belligerent militant group
That sponsors the revolution that will not be documented in the history books
Decide to cross those lil' guys, you've obviously been ill-advised
Yet and still, the question that arises to the mind
Did they make it? Was it worth it?
Did they win? Did they survive?”

“It’s been a long journey here.” The Colonel walked up to a patch of settled dark soil. A tombstone right above it that read; ‘In Loving Memory of Nameless Soldier’. The war is over and finally the old scholar can sit down and spend some time with his son. As he had promised before. No more to fear a feeling he wished both had lived to experience but he was just as loyal to the Empire as his father was. “I’m sorry, son.” he slowly wept. “Nobody will remember your name from this war. But we will. The war is coming to an end. It's our time to join hands and ensure that all of our sacrifices will not be in vain.” On the horizon came a platoon of men dressed in Helena reds marching towards the capital city. Turning his head over to the cheers echoing throughout the valley where a lot of the war’s blood was spilled. Now men marched coming back from the front. “We’re all coming home, son.”

A letter written by Darius Sabari to the servicemen of the Imperial State Army

    Spoiler

“Men and women of the Imperial State Army, you’ve done your nation a great service. I was never one for speeches as many of you know already. So I will state it simple for my own sake as I am now an older man. We had nothing at the beginning, not even a functioning gatehouse to even work with. Yet you all stood together alongside people who you took up as brothers and sisters against a threat to protect each other's way of life and created a union stronger that gave meaning and drive to the Imperial State Army. We've molded this city ourselves and now that an end to this war is in sight, it is all of our duty, soldier or not, to protect it from those who wish to destroy it.  We’ve all lost a tremendous amount, let’s make it not be in vain. Every day we live is for one of our Nameless soldiers who could not come home to family, like the rest of us. The Empire and I want to thank you. We truly owe a great debt to the servicemen who put themselves in the center of this war to ensure what we have built prospers for centuries. Thank you all for this experience of a lifetime, soldiers.”

  10. The Colonel stood from atop of his office, where watched Alren DeNurem give a speech to the troops. The glimmer of hope of every single one of them showed in their eyes. They found their purpose in every word of it. The young Captain had come a long way in such a short amount of time. “Strange times we live in.”

    MISSION STATEMENT
    EXTRACTION
    1st Regiment of Helena
    2nd Regiment of Kaedrin
    Army of Haense
    Briefing:
We got word they captured a civilian on the road and are demanding a large sum of minas. Colonel's orders are to bring her back alive showing Lorriane the might of the Empire. Cyrus has been in negotiations with the Lorrainians and has a reputation of paying lump sums to their command structure for release of captives. With Cyrus' volunteering to lure the Lorrainians out, we set a trap at tower 7 on the 6th of Sigismund’s End with the rally point set at Haense. No casualties were taken from the joint forces of the Empire and the captive was safely escorted back to Helena, swiftly being taken into the care of Vexilia. Although we managed to capture a Lorrianian the captive ended up bleeding out due to the wounds he received when combat ensued. The captive was quickly disposed of by being tossed into the river and left for dead. Mission accomplished.

  13. The 5th of Horen’s Calling, 1746

Muffled shouts can be heard drifting in through the hallway and past a large wooden door left ajar. Colonel Sabari sits behind a large dark oak desk, an ever-growing mass of paperwork dominates a corner of the wooden surface as the days affairs marched on. His hand gloved in a very fine yet sturdy leather hovers near his face as he occasionally strokes his chin in thought. As the clamoring outside comes to rest he knew it was time to address his congregation waiting diligently outside. In a smooth motion, he rises from his seat and without a thought grabs the imperial coat slung on the back of his chair; draping it smartly from shoulder to shoulder.

In a matter of moments he was already through his office door and down the hall that was lit in a warm orange glow of the afternoon sun. As he would appear before the courtyard a loud crack would echo across the air as a legion of Imperial Army soldiers would snap to attention, the heels of their boots smacking together in unison. Giving a moment of pause before he spoke he would remark to himself proudly of what he saw. Brave men, both young and old, willing to lay down their lives for something that meant so much more than the sum of its parts. A slight smile would creep across his lips just before vanishing as he addressed his comrades.

“Men of the Imperial Army, it is with great pleasure that I am able to stand before you today and share with you such great news. It is truly a sight to behold you all, shoulder to shoulder, in the colours of the Empire. The sacrifices you must make on a daily basis are of immeasurable magnitude. And such is the fact that you are all of a volunteer force, ready and willing to lay down your lives in service to this great Empire. If you have not heard it, I thank you. Your fellow citizens thank you, this whole city thanks you, and most of all your Emperor thanks you.”

“In absolute recognition of your selfless and dutiful sacrifices, we of your upper leadership body would like to make your service to this mighty army even more worthwhile- past whatever justification you already hold dear.

Veteran soldiers, after your fourth year of faithful service to the army, you will become entitled to your own homestead. One that is provided by the state and exempt from taxation. In addition, you will be awarded a plot of some of the Empires most fertile soil within which you may grow your own food, support your family, and contribute to a community of your own making. These homes shall be built by Imperial master craftsmen and shall adequately reflect our appreciation for what you all do for this organization. Take this opportunity to spread your roots and give increased meaning behind what it is that you fight for.”

“Speak with your company sergeants or your brigade captains for further information regarding this announcement. I look forward to the future that we create together. Long live the Emperor, Ave Oren!”

In yet another smooth and calculated motion, the Colonel performs an about-face and disappears from before the formation of soldiers and back into the red keep. His work never quite ending, he would return to his office. This time, the large wooden door would drift closed in his wake, ending with the light clank as the door latch finds its home with the stone frame.

To recognize the selfless service and sacrifice of our brave Imperial State Army soldiers, the following will become the rite of all eligible members.

    • Upon the completion of one’s fourth year and until their final year of faithful service to the Imperial State Army, the member becomes entitled to the following:
    • State-provided, tax-exempt, homestead within the walled confines of the newly dubbed Harlingen Estates.
    • State-provided, fertile agricultural land plot within which any myriad of crops or livestock may be cultivated for the benefit of the member and the community of the Harlingen Estate.
    • Access to the community stores of the Harlingen Estates.

A modest tariff of 20% of all produced goods within the state-provided land plots shall be directly contributed to the Imperial State Army.

Eligible members may invite their immediate family members to take up residence within the provided home and participate in the community of the Harlingen Estates. Additionally, non-eligible military members or Imperial citizens may be given access to the Harlingen Estates so long as they are sponsored by a current eligible member. Responsibility and accountability of sponsored individuals falls solely on the sponsor.

The Imperial State Army encourages the establishment of familial military lineage. As such, as a soldier continues their service, increases in rank, and assumes higher responsibility; said members may enjoy increased and improved living conditions. This may come in many forms but most notably as larger and more opulent homesteads.

Furthermore, veteran soldiers may continue to receive all of the aforementioned entitlements even after the conclusion of their military service through military lineage. Offspring may inherit said entitlements without having to achieve veteran status so long as they join the Imperial State Army as soon as they come of age; with these benefits extending to their respective household patriarchs. For each family member that joins from a veteran status household, they shall receive a service lineage pay bonus.
