What magic(s) will you be teaching?: Voidal shifting

Summarise the Lore of this magic(s):

Voidal shifting is the art of travelling short straight line distances through the void. By using an anchor one can pick where they wish to be dragged out, once they enter the void.

Given the limitations, up and down do not work very well. Nor can you fit through bars or small gaps, and you can not bring anyone but yourself with you during the shift.

The straight line nature, one must be able to see where they wish to place the anchor before they can place it, thus making the straight lines only available where one can see it. No shifting around corners. It also means you can't shift through people, thus making a large weakness of the magic being people themselves.

Just as for void translocation would fill an object with mana, the mage must fill themselves head to toe in their own mana, normally causing a rather noticeable shudder. The anchor itself often appears as a small, pea like black dot before the mage decides to shift, and upon shifting. The Mage will implode into a mist of the aura's colour, signalling the start of the shift and another explosion of mist at the other end a moment later.

Write up a lesson that your character would give to a student:

Velu claps her hands together, before rubbing them from the snowy cold. “Ok ok... lets see. So you worked out the connection part. Now for the fun part, and by fun I mean the anchor. This little invention is the only reason we come out the other side of the void. Without it, we'd be lost forever.” she chuckles softly shaking her head with a grin. “Not too dangerous, right?” she steps into the largish room decorated sparsely. With careful steps she moves to the center, before whirling upon the student

The student nods softly. Giving his own grin in return.  His hands clasping together as he watches Velu closely.

Velu steps forth raising up her arms in a dramatic fashion “Now! To shift yourself, you must first gather up the mana within yourself. Always a giveaway sadly but tis the price we pay.” Velulaei stops to focus for a few seconds, her body letting out a clear shudder. “Given how we must flood our body with mana to match. Our 'ticks' so to say are often easy to spot.” she lets out a deep breath, motioning her hand forth towards the student. “Think you can copy such?”

The student focuses hard, intently and after a time he simply shakes his head. “I can't.”

Velu smiles gently, moving across the room near to her student. Kneeling down slightly next to him. “Well, you are but a novice. The actual shifting part of voidal shifting is very draining, so the mana build up to prepare for it is just as hard. So we must do the anchor instead.” she raises her hand up in front of her, after a few moments the black pea sized dot forms from the nothingness of the void. “The anchor is the end point of the shift. No higher, no lower. Just level.” she motions to the student.

After a lot.. and I mean a lot of focus, effort and intense work. The student follows suit, making his own little anchor just in front of him.

Velu nods with a grin. “Very good, very good. That alone is all you will be able to do right now.” she steps over behind him. Before moving to smack him hard on the back, the sudden shock causing the anchor to poof out and the connection to cut. “And with the focus needed to keep it going. You can't be doing other things at this stage. So focus on anchor forming in a private, quiet place.”

The student nods again, before falling back, resting with deep breaths. His body drained from the effort as he simply pants for a bit of time.

Velulaei nods once more. “Also get some rest, each time you do this will drain you. So keep practising and next time we shall see if you are ready to progress.”
