    .~|The Hammer Bregolach|~.

    | The Sudden Flame |

    Creator MC name:

    _Fid_

    Creator RP name:

    Belestram Sylvaeri

    Magical properties:

Bregolach is a large smithing-hammer wrought entirely of adamant silver-steel, forged in the waning days of Axios by Belestram Sylvaeri. Crafted in the style of the Elves save for its proportion, the hammer is extensive in size and heavy beyond the norm; the haft of the mallet is almost three feet in length, and cord-bound in fine black leather which is smooth but unyielding to the touch. Upon this shaft is set a hammer-head of elegance and function made one, shaped in the handsome likeness of a rolling sea-wave, with the etched wings of sea-birds flanking it on either side. Along the haft's length flowing Elvish script is graved, and the letters glow like pale starlight when the hammer is held by a Servant of Aeriel. Translated to the Common Speech, they may be read thusly:

    ~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~

"Weaver of Spells, Breaker of Ores,

    Hammer of the Wright and Bearer of the Burning Ember;

Bregolach am I, the Sudden Flame! My Song is Glad,

and until the End of Days shall it Ring!"

    ~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~

While it can be used to impressive effect in the field of mundane smithing, it is in the craft of Ascended Infusion that Bregolach sounds the brightest. By employing it in the hand-forging of weaponry and armour, an Ascended smith is able to weave his or her Embers directly into the material being forged, resulting in a considerably more powerful enchantment.  Beyond this, Bregolach may be used in combat (though it was made for peace, and therefore lends itself to warfare with reluctance.)

    Explanation of the Effects:

The hammer is effectively an energy conduit; instead of delivering the embers of the infusion by hand as most Ascended are wont to do, the wright who bears Bregolach imparts them through the hammer while the metal is being wrought, binding them directly to the material and therefore weaving the divine energies into the essence of the forged item itself. The result is an enhanced form of Aerielian artificery, one which makes the infusion markedly more potent. (A T1 Ascended who is forging a Emberthorn blade from scratch would be able to create a T2 infusion, a T2 Ascended a T3 infusion, and so on and so forth.) Apart from the difference in delivery system and Tier amplification, the hammer changes nothing in the effect of the enchantments themselves; infusions created by this method are not more permanent, and must be recharged just as regular infusions are (though the material will directly absorb the fuel ember instead of accepting it into a receptacle as is the usual manner.)

While it is ostensibly a smithing-hammer and therefore a tool rather than a weapon, Bregolach can in moments of dire need be used in combat, and once activated will bear effects similar to a T5 Ruinous Hearth enchantment for a period of up to FOUR (4) emotes before guttering out. This is not its intended purpose, and such use will render the Hammer inert for a period of one Elven day  afterwards before it may be used again.

    Red Lines:

[!] In order for the boons granted by Bregolach to apply to an infusion, the smith of the infusion in question must actually forge the item in role-play. The over-arching purpose of these artifacts is to provide a more in-depth  "crafting" experience to Ascended holy alteration, and skipping the necessary RP is at odds with this goal. [!]

-In simple terms, Bregolach enhances the Ascended infusions of its user, amplifying their potential for such craft. It possesses no intrinsic enchanting power of its own, and therefore cannot “create” an enchantment from scratch.

-Due to the above-mentioned limitation and reasons of general logic, the hammer cannot be used by a non-Ascended save for purposes of  mundane smithing; one who does not possess Embers cannot infuse with it.

-Bregolach can only enhance an infusion the equivalent of one Tier, up to T5 but not further. Therefore a T5 Ascended employing the hammer would find that their enchantment is only marginally stronger than one infused in the traditional fashion (by hand), if at all.

-If used in a combat situation as a Hearth weapon, the hammer will deplete the residual energies left behind by previous uses, and as such will only operate for a period of up to 4 emotes before going out. After running on these "fumes", the Hammer will be completely inert for a period of one OOC day before it can be used again, and must be employed to create further infusions before it may be wielded as a weapon again.

    Thomas Woodlaw

    _Fid_ (with Jallentime.)

    Creator RP name:

    Belestram Sylvaeri (with Delaselva Vientos.)

    Magical Properties:

The pair of the Hammer Bregolach, Oninthil was wrought in the latter days of Axios by the artificer Belestram Sylvaeri. It is more powerful  and yet more reserved than its brother, for in its making participated Delaselva Vientos, who is Master Sage, and by the collaboration of these two wills was created a truly unique and priceless masterpiece of Aerielian craft. It is in material appearance similar to the Hammer, and vast indeed in its dimensions, being five feet and more from horn to heel. This polished expanse shines like a silver-steel mirror, and is adorned with lines of glowing Elvish script which form three great circles upon its unmarred surface. Translated into the Common Speech, they may be read thusly:

    ~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~

     "Ring-maker, Sword-crafter, and Gem-cutter,

    Anvil of the Wright and Keeper of the Stalwart Fire;

Oninthil am I, of Light Unceasing! Hear my hymn,

and may it sound until the End of Days!"

    ~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~~=~

The two lesser circles bear ring-moulds at their center, but the larger, middle third bears no such divots, and is exceptionally well-suited to any manner of mundane forging; as with Bregolach, however, the true power of Oninthil lies in Ascended Infusion. The anvil does not enhance the wrought infusion beyond the power lent by the wright, for it serves a more elegant purpose than its pair, and operates in far more mysterious ways. When forging an infusion upon Oninthil’s surface, a wright of the Rapture school will find that they are able to enchant in the style of the Ruin wright, and vice-versa. While this unlocks the potential of the Ascended infuser to create the full range of Aerielian enchantments rather than only their respective type, an infusion which is not of the enchanter's school will be considerably weaker than their usual efforts.

Due to its immense amount of confined power (and unlike the Hammer Bregolach, which is fairly grounded in design and usage,) the Anvil Oninthil possesses a powerful aura of holiness which in practice resembles a low-tier Ascended Brazier. In its presence neither miasma nor taint may spread; all un-corrupted souls will hear whispered hymnals of beauty ethereal issuing from its shining surfaces, and twisted beings will instead hear a horrific, insistent shrieking akin to the scraping of metal.

    Explanation of the Effects:

The nature of the magic which stems from the Anvil is somewhat more complicated than that of Bregolach, because it is completely unique in form and function. In simple terms, the ability to “convert” infusions stems from the latent energies which the Anvil possesses of either school, as both sub-types were present at its creation (Ruin by Belestram, and Rapture by Delaselva.)  Multifarious embers were supplied to the metal until it thrummed with  divine energy, creating what is in essence a reservoir of holy magic. When a desired Infusion is not of the Ascended wright’s sub-type, the Anvil draws upon this bank of power to help "convert" the enchantment; this is done at a loss, for efficiency is the price of versatility, and both the embers provided by the smith and one of the Anvil's "charges" are consumed, with the result being weaker than the infuser's Tier. Employed in this manner, the reservoir is limited to FIVE (5) uses, and upon exhaustion must be replenished by Ascended of both Rapture and Ruin schools in order to continue operating properly. It is important to note that both sub-types must be present at the fueling, regardless of which magic was employed during the "conversions".

This colossal amount of stored power is the source of the effects which emulate a Brazier, for in the Anvil's heart burns a powerful flame stoked by two Elder Ascended and fueled by continuous re-charging. Just as a Brazier's Soulflame would, this stalwart fire radiates holy energy and prevents Oninthil’s immediate surroundings from being overcome by dark miasmas and taint. This serves a limited purpose, however, because the effectiveness of the quasi-brazier decreases proportionally as the Anvil is drained.

    Red Lines:

[!] In order for the boons granted by Oninthil to apply to an infusion, the smith of the infusion in question must actually forge the item in role-play. The over-arching purpose of these artifacts is to provide a more in-depth  crafting experience to Ascended holy alteration, and skipping the necessary RP is at odds with this goal. [!]

-While Oninthil is shaped of adamant and therefore resilient to mundane means of destruction, T4-5 Fire evocation, enchanted tools, dragonflame, and other such methods may be employed to destroy the anvil and dispel its magic. It is destructible.

-An Ascended wright forging an enchantment of the opposite school upon the Anvil Oninthil will find that his or her enchantment is one (1) Tier lower than their actual Tier. By this logic a T3 Ruin Ascended  forging an infusion of Rapturous Emberthorn would find that the resultant enchantment is only T2. This effect can, however, be negated if both Oninthil AND Bregolach are present in the forging.

-After five enchantments of any type (Rapture or Ruin,) the Anvil must be recharged by two Ascended of T3 or higher, of either School, before it can be used to infuse again.

-The ‘warding’ effect of the anvil acts as a “large” class brazier would and does not prevent dark creatures from entering its field of influence. It is a passive effect; which reduces proportionally as the Anvil's power is exhausted. It's effective range is therefore 30 blocks at 5/5 charges, 24 blocks at 4/5 charges, 18 blocks at 3/5 charges, and so on and so forth.

  3.

It is a quiet evening in the Grand Capital of Kal’Omith, and nowhere in the great stone city more-so than the Clan Hall of the Emberhorns. There, among the calm stone pillars and gnarled roots, Lodbairn stands before a thick oaken feast-table, broad arms folded over his braided auburn beard. A letter writ in runes lies flat before him, and the Clan Father’s characteristically solemn emerald eyes fill with wrothful fury like a glass poured with vitriol. “Imrid amrâd ursul!” he roars suddenly, causing dust to tumble from the rafters. With a brutal side-ways swipe the dwarf-lord casts the page to the floor, slamming his clenched fists unto the table with nigh-unbridled rage. “Tuh teh foires wit’ ye fer t’is idioceh. ‘As t’is war turned yeh all stark-mad?!”

His massive, meaty fists slam down upon the table again with a clamour, upending a nearby plate as he continues to bellow. “And WHU es t’is feckin’ “Dain Ironspoine”? Sence w’en does som’ streetwoise mongrel pup ‘ave teh roight tuh challenge ah Clan Fat’eh? Foind meh Aldal Oire’eart!” he roars, in the direction of any dwarf unfortunate enough to be in the vicinity.

I'm glad you kept the Blade Runner reference I slipped in there.

On a more serious note I am very pleased with how this lore has progressed since I phased out of the project and obviously I give my full support/+1/etc.

When we were starting this project I remember it being particularly important that the creatures be of such rarity as to effectively skirt the line of myth. There isn't meant to be a set progression from Doppelganger to Replicant because no such standard exists; each (of the two) homunculi who exist with souls received them in diverse fashions. It's intended to provide definition to an undefined concept and as such is both necessary and constructive.

  5. I happen to know that you've worked on this lore tirelessly for a long time, and it really shows. The effort displayed here is admirable and I commend you for it.

Furthermore, while I cannot pretend to know the current feelings of the LT on Aengudaemonic submissions, I do know that you are willing to work with anyone and everyone to make this lore a credit to the server. Therefore, though I foresee possible issues and discrepacies, I can whole-heartedly and without hesitation give you my +1 endorsement.

    Nice work, Jordan.

How long have you played on LotC?:

    Around five years.

How many hours per day/week are you available?:

I tend to have around 6 hours available for the server in each day, which can vary depending on classwork. If properly managed I can usually set aside enough time to both write (should I need to) and roleplay.

Have you read and do you thoroughly understand Magic Lore?:

I do my best to keep abreast of lore, new and old. Despite never possessing voidal magics, for instance, I strive very strongly to understand how and why things work the way they do.

What Magic Lore do you hold the most experience with?:

I am very well-versed in Holy magics, with a focused expertise on the Ascended (in which I have a TA.) I have been practicing the magic for quite some time (both pre- and post-rewrite) and  can comfortably say that I understand it second perhaps only to Jallentime, the writer of its most recent iteration. Additionally, due to the nature of this magic and the character who practices it, I have found it both constructive and tremendously helpful to obtain at the very least a working understanding of dark magics, (with the exception perhaps of Dark Shamanism/Soul Puppetry, etc. which I have had very limited experience with.)

It also stands to be noted that I have recently resumed playing my druid of 3+ years and become a Soul-Tree, and I have reacquainted myself with the lore with zeal. There are other MT who might have a better grasp on it, but I have a soft spot in my heart for the lore and like to think I understand it well.

Write about a magic-related topic that you find interesting (e.g. How mental barriers work):

I have a particular fondness for the relatively-new Thulean, or "blood" Druidism, by Swgrclan.

With the sheer amount of magic lore on the server, I have developed a deep appreciation for magics which manage to be fresh and original without being superfluous; it gladdens the heart to pay witness to old concepts revitalized in ways that enhance but do not fundamentally alter them. For years, Druidry has walked more or less the same paths- with the exception of the occasional set of clarifications and changes the magic has remained static for the better part of half a decade. It is a comprehensive, steady, and enjoyable art to roleplay, and many I'm sure would be loth to see it change. Therefore by merging the nebulous concept of blood magic with a stalwart server mainstay, by allowing the two schools to work in tandem WITHOUT making changes to either lorepiece, the writer was able to create a seamless variation on a theme almost as old as the server itself. It's the sort of thing I, as a player and a future MT, would be delighted to see more of: a magic greater than the sum of its parts.

Give a Summary of any Staff/Lead positions you’ve held on any Minecraft Server in the past:

I have served on the ET in the far past (around the end of Anthos/Fringe era) and had a generally decent time of it. I left the team during the wipe after the Fringe and simply did not re-apply. I also currently write for the WT, mostly "Notable Figures" articles.

Do you have a Discord account? (You may post it here, or choose to keep it private until you are asked for it. Note; Discord is required to communicate with the team):

    You've got it, I believe.

Have you ever receive a Magical Blacklist, if so, please link it:

    No.

  7. He doesn't need to be defended, he knows his merits and I doubt heartily that forum screamers will change that. For the record, even though the Ascended got f*cked in the ear by this event I do not blame him in the slightest- and the initial release and exploration of Malin's City was an ET masterclass in how to keep a large number of players entertained without exerting enormous amounts of manpower.

Was it perfect and RP heavy? Did it suit everyone? Not necessarily. Did I enjoy it? Yeah.

Regarding the Ascended: yes, we got railed by the backlash to this event, and yes, of course we're unhappy with it. Dynamic RP is dynamic RP, can't argue with that... and you'll notice that no-one's asked for a rollback or something stupid like that to relieve the pressure on us. It is what it is.

However, as has been stated and must be stated again, we were WRITTEN into the event without our foreknowledge or approval- that's the rub here. We actually discussed this several times during the event: "Should we trust Mesmodyne" came up in plurality, but each time we came to realize that while the ILLUSION of a choice was there, the Staff of Hope (which housed the Fragment) was tied to us IRP and we couldn't just "ignore it." Furthermore, if you've read the leaked document and/or spoken with us about it, you would find that Jallentime's name comes up in the text as a source for the Fragment's power. We didn't know or approve of the Aengudaemon using us as a battery- it just happened. I could go on, but I implore you to understand, at least, that while the Ascended have their faults, we KNOW that people don't want for Aengudaemon groups to be the protagonists.

We had hoped that our further actions during this event might help our image by undoing the damage that the ET had us do- sh*t-canning it seems a bit disingenuous. The Ascended march on.

RP Name of creator(s) of Artifact (N/A if not applicable):

    Belestram Sylvaeri and Delaselva Vientos

    Effect(s) of Artifact:

Put simply, the Ring alters the physical form of the Descendant who wears it, and bestows via Infusion (Holy Alteration) a reinforcement of the flesh somewhat akin to the Ascended's own. Upon recital of the prayer inscribed along its inside circle, the Ring’s deific power begins to course through the wearer’s frame, slowly changing their countenance: the eyes would turn to some shade of gold, silver, or cerulean, hair and skin lightening and becoming unblemished respectively. By the third Elven day of use, the Descendant’s physical outward appearance would come to resemble that of a fully-altered Ascended.

After the third day, the Ring's advanced effects slowly take hold: the artifact’s Aengulic energies begin to further saturate the Descendant’s flesh, reinforcing their mortal frame with holy light in a very basic imitation of an Ascended’s own changed form. This rudimentary suffusion grants neither the regenerating factor present in Ascended, nor resistance to Soul-alteration; it does not even bestow a 'true' immortality, despite its name. Rather, if properly recharged, the Ring reinforces the mortal frame just enough to  extend the wearer's lifespan a finite amount. A boon of this caliber seldom comes without cost, however,  for the unbridled energies of the Archaengul are not safely bestowed upon the mortal flesh. Unbeknownst to the smith and his peers, the energies which course through the Ring bestow a curse alongside their blessing- the changes which occur to the wearer’s physiology render them completely infertile, regardless of gender, age or race.

    Red Lines of Artifact:

    - The recipient of the Ring's blessing MUST be advised of its effects in full, and OOC consent must be given.

    - The Ring DOES NOT bestow the immortality that would be found in “true” Ascended, Keepers, Soul Trees, etc… only an imitation thereof, achieved by means of magical reinforcement of the flesh similar to the Ascended.

-It can extend the lifespan of an individual Descendant by NO MORE than one hundred and fifty years. Furthermore...

-In order to evince the maximum effectiveness of the Ring, it MUST be periodically (every few years) recharged by no less than a T5 Ascended (any lesser will be unable to replenish the power necessary). If this is not done, the enchantment becomes dormant, the holy energy departs from the flesh, and the wearer will resume aging as normal.

    - The Ring DOES NOT represent a connection to Aeriel, and is at its core simply a powerful blessing granted to a trusted ally of the Order. It also DOES NOT bestow any of the other  hallmarks of the Ascended (regeneration, immunity to disease, resistance to soul-alteration, etc.)

    - Due to the alterations caused upon the Descendant’s body, the individual in question is rendered completely sterile.

    - As a Holy artifact which draws its energy from the Archaengul, this Ring would simply burn  when in contact with beings of a soul-corrupted nature, having no further effect.

Explanation of effect(s) (i.e. how it does what it does - slight bending of magic lore is allowed):

This artifact was created by two powerful Ascended infusers with the intent to bestow a powerful Aerielian blessing upon a close ally of the Order who is, for whatever reason, unable or unwilling to take up a full connection to the Archaengul. Basing their work in part upon the rudimentary Emberblood Pendants (which can bestow some of the outward earmarks of Ascension upon the Descendant wearer,)  the smiths of the Ring intended to expand upon and perfect the holy enchantment by employing a more complex and powerful series of infusions. After a great deal of experimentation and several failures, they managed to bind the desired holy energy to a band of silver and gold. The divine energies of Aeriel proved harder to manipulate than the creators had expected, however, and whether by Her divine will or simple happenstance, the Ring was only a shadow of what they had hoped it would be. While they had intended to find a way to grant an altered form akin to the Ascended themselves, they achieved only a pale imitation thereof.

The Ring's magical effects are achieved by virtue of a tremendous amount of Aerielian energy, which stems from the two Embers infused into the artifact's band. With the slight lore-bending allowed by the MArt process, these Embers will be allowed to act in a similar fashion to the living Embers which burn inside the Ascended, and if continuously recharged will have a similar (if much, much weaker) effect upon the wearer's body.

Summarize the Lore of this Magic:

In ages past the source of Ascended magic and power was the legendary ‘Tree of Life’, but in recent days the Living Flame which once dwelt within its boughs has transferred to an Ascended host- the Grand Sage. It is from this mortal conduit that the embers of each and every Ascended originate, and burn in their hearts forever. Their mortal form is suffused by the Song of Aeriel, and they receive the Archaengul's gifts. Through these changes they are granted several boons- a heightened level of passive regeneration outside of combat, a general resistance to corruption of the soul, the ability to Soulmend, and of course the capacity to employ the signature Aerielian flame, or Soulfire.

Soulfire itself comes in three variants, though the first two (Ruin and Rapture) are considerably more powerful than the last (the Demi-Ascended flame.) Ruinous soulfire is employed to destroy the tainted creature forthwith, to tear away at the tainted essence until nothing is left. Rapturous soulfire, on the other hand, is employed to sap the strength of the dark creature in question- making it more useful for capture and subjugation of the foes of the Archaengul. The third variant is the Demi-Ascended Flame, which is forever weaker due to the practitioner's continued use of voidal magic.

Write up a lesson that your character would give to a student:

The winds which howled down from among the mountain-heights were deadly cold, their frigid shrieks echoing amidst the far peaks and moraines. It was a desolate place, and treacherous- each step among the stones could give way to a frozen gorge, each unwary movement result in an avalanche to sweep a clumsy mountaineer to his death. And even still, the Acolyte thinks to himself, I find myself here, at the end of the world. He shivers, adjusting his grip on the rapidly freezing bowl of soup in his hands, and for the thousandth time curses his foolishness at volunteering, in the company of the Justicar Sylvaeri and several other Ascended, to scout the north of Ceru. Camped on the edge of a cliff and lashed by the endless wind, their cluster of frozen tents seemed small in the gathered slopes- vulnerable, forgotten.

His reverie is broken by the tread of armoured boots, and through the rising blizzard his eyes find the shape of the armoured Justicar. “Cold?” Belestram smiles, his luminescent silver eyes intense beneath his fur-lined hood. Without waiting for an answer (indeed, what answer could there be, save a resounding yes?) the elven knight makes to seat himself upon the blanketed stone beside the Acolyte, drawing from his satchel a piece of jerky and beginning to tear at it with his teeth.

“I’m told you’ve taken well to the histories and lore of the Order,” he remarks between mouthfuls of the portable meal. “Passed the written with flying colours, Delaselva said.”

“Ninety-five percent,” the Acolyte mutters with reservation, shifting his collar upwards against the wind.

“And how do you like doing field-work for a change?” the elf laughs, though the sound is largely snatched away by a particularly large gust of wind which buffets the camp. “On second thought, son… don’t answer that.” Tucking away the jerky and brushing off his gloved hands, the Justicar shifts to face the Acolyte more fully upon the stone. “You’ll find our work takes many forms- a day in the noble-courts of Linandria, the next slogging the swamps of Mardon. One gets used to it. Anyway… have you attempted to summon the flame since we last spoke?”

The Acolyte shivers slightly, rubbing his hands together to ward off the cold. “I have t-tried, aye. M-my flame isn’t large, yet, b-but… it’s getting t-there.”

The Justicar nods, inclining his head momentarily in concentration. The wind whips at his cloak incessantly, but as his eyes open once again they are akin to silver pools of bright molten metal. They glow brightly, even in the stormy darkness, and turning to the Acolyte focus intently upon his form. What veins are visible upon his person pulse gently with light as well. “Summon Aeriel’s Gift, then, and we shall see how far you have come.”

The student nods solemnly, closing his own eyes and beginning to deepen his breathing so as to calm and steady his mind. After a long moment he grimaces, evidently having trouble concentrating in the adverse conditions.

“Focus,” the Justicar chides grimly, resting his gloved wrist upon the hilt of the longsword which juts up from his belt. “The forces of darkness will not allow you greater respite than the howling wind, I can promise you that. Clear your mind, block the noise of the world- they matter not, for when you are summoning the Flame all that matters is yourself and Our Lady of Sacellum.”

“Y-yes, sir.” the Acolyte chatters, furrowing his cold brow as he settles into a second attempt. A few seconds pass- a minute, five. Finally, visible even among the snowflakes whipping about them, a small flame bursts forth above the student’s upturned hand- scarce more than a candle in size. The man’s eyes open, aglow with a similar light, to gaze upon the summoned with a fascinated expression.

Belestram’s mouth curls into a small, approving smile as his pupil overcomes the conditions to focus, nodding. “Very good. I want you to practice summoning in poor conditions; in haste, in disarray- work on being able to focus, son, regardless of where you are in the world. I want to be able to wake you in the middle of the night with your boots off and find a fistful of Soulfire in my face.”

The Acolyte cannot restrain a smile at that, nodding gratefully at the praise. His flame flickers but remains steady, the man exerting a certain amount of concentration to keep it at its present size and strength.

“It’s saved my life a few times,” the teacher grunts, eyeing the Acolyte’s Soulfire and noting its only somewhat steady nature. “I see you’ve been working on keeping the flame active, as well… this is good. Employing Soulfire is like using a muscle- the more you exercise it, the easier it becomes to use. Don’t be afraid to push against the bounds of your abilities.” The elf glances up at the storm around them, shaking his head. “It’s unlikely we will be pressing any further north tomorrow, so let us see what you are capable of now. I’d like you to expand your flame- will it to grow, and evince this will into the corporeal.”

The pupil nods, a scowl of concentration appearing on his lips as he renews his focus- attempting to coax the flickering flame into a larger form. Slowly, like a fire catching upon kindling, the flame grows and expands until it rests at about the size of a large peach-pit. The Acolyte’s brow sheens with sweat at the effort, a shudder appearing in his limbs that has little to do with the cold.

“Sulian. Good.” The Justicar says after a moment, clapping his gloved hands together to allow his pupil respite. The latter releases a breath of relief, and like a candle being snuffed out his flame recedes entirely from existence. “You are doing well, Acolyte- very well. I’d like you to continue finding the time, each day, to summon forth a flame- and push the limits of what you can do. Each day, attempt to hold the connection longer, more steadily.

  10. A sturdy piece of parchment is pinned to a prominent wall in Kal’Omith, its bordure dark and message brief-written in black ink.

    Greetings be upon ye, reader.

Let it be heard and known that I, Lodbairn, known to some but not yet all Dwed who live in this fair city Omith, wish to honour the memory of my departed wife Dagmar by donating to the Temple of Brathmordakin in her name a sum of five-thousand silver pieces.

She came naught by land as she should have, but by sea, and in storm her ship was sundered and all souls lost. To her honour I bid you raise a tankard, for she was a hardy woman, and good-hearted. I only wish that she had learnt to swim.

    That be all.

When harpers and warrior-poets sing the tales and epics manifold of the grand citadel Kal’Omith, there is scarce doubt that all goodly Dwarves will weep to hear the ruin which befell her when the kinslayers came. Omithiel’s name she bore, this stalwart bastion; capital of Kingdom and gem of Dwarvendom … and yet cast down  and besmirched was she by the dishonour of rebellion ‘gainst rightful King. By faithless dwarves for whom her name and meaning bore little import was she stripped and neglected, and at their passing left to fall into decay and abandonment.

Fie! Would that it was so, and naught more! Alas, for it is known that ill-deeds beget evil, and thus by kinslaying, the greatest crime of all, was begotten a great evil indeed.

For in the black pits and caves of the Deep Roads dark things dwell, and finding beloved Omith abandoned they issued forth and built their twisted homes there, defiling much that was once beautiful and revered. The city was given over to darkness; thrown down were the statues and stonework, broken the seals and crypts. The gates were shut to the world, and evil such festered within that even the natural world beyond marked its coming and despaired.

Yet even in these black days there were Dwarves of courage and repute, who stood loyal and free beside the Grand King Gror Ireheart in fair Tal’Azmar. The Great Clans gathered to him, and to relieve their capital the King and his Legion did march forth across the far lands to retake it, though they knew the pitch of battle was a treacherous one. This great host of armoured Dwarves, grim and determined, crossed the desert and came to the lands twixt Mountain and Sea where the gate of Kal'Omith stands.

And there upon the field they beheld a far multitudinous mass of goblin-men, and where lesser Dwarves would have quailed, they steeled their hearts and raised their shining weapons proud. A charge was sounded, and like the waves of a mighty sea the Legion and its allies battered forth. A fight akin to none that has been seen in recent years was had, then, and many a Dwarf wreathed himself in heroism upon that day, or met an end in glorious battle for King and Dwarvendom. Casting the Goblins down to all sides the heroic warriors breached the gate and fought their way, hard-pressed, into the dark hole which was once their capital.

For twain long years the Dwarves of the Grand Kingdom gave desperate battle to goblin hordes, their once-mighty Omith in defilement and ruin about their heels. The caverns rang with brash clamour of steel and iron, and stank of death- the dying cries of many a good and honest Dwarf lay heavy upon that air. But for all this tragedy there was glory also, and made feared was the name of the Legion once more. When the last goblin fell dead the Dwarves let forth a roar such that it shook the land, for Omith once again was theirs.

For many months the noble dwed toiled in the black pit which had once been Kal’Omith, and the hammers of the smiths and masons fell akin to ringing bells throughout. They rebuilt their guildhalls and their homes, and raised anew the statues and crypts of honour which were greatly revered. And afore many years had passed, anew Kal’Omith shone; the star in the crown of Dwarvendom, and capital of the mighty, resurgent Grand Kingdom of Urguan.

    - An Excerpt from Tales of Axios, Volume IV

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    In many cities across Axios the following missive is pinned, its message simple and written upon parchment with golden ink. Those who would be awake at such a time would note that they are put there by stocky, green-hooded figures in the small hours of the morning.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Denizens of the Isles,

    Noble Peoples of Axios,

It is the purpose of this missive to announce that the gates of the great City of Kal’Omith are to be opened, so that she may shine brightly once again in her rightful place as Capital of the Grand Kingdom of Urguan, and Seat of the Grand King Gror Ireheart. May his beard grow ever longer, and never fall out.

Herein are shops manifold, and homes for all who need them- be they dwed or otherwise. Let it be known that all are welcome within our city who bear peaceful purpose, for the halls of the Dwarves bear wealth aplenty and ample fiscal opportunity for those with the motivation to seize it. Herein also are many great architectures to behold for the discerning tourist, for the Temple of the Brathmordakin is remade, and renewed to past glory is the Obsidian Throne.

Briefly explain the lore behind this construct or creature:

A Soul Tree is a rare gift granted to elder Druids, allowing them to leave the fetters of their mortal frame behind. Grown through the Druid by way of their own natural magic, the tree is intended to accept within it the soul of the practitioner, binding it to the growing sapling even as it grows through their flesh. This is a dangerous and potentially fatal process- but, if successful, the growing plant becomes a "Soul Tree", bearing within its form the soul of the perished Druid.  The tree (and the soul within it) contains an immense amount of natural energy and becomes able to create a "husk" mimicking the Druid's former self, which becomes the avatar of the character in the world.

This husk and its tree have several notable strengths, weaknesses and red-lines. To begin with, the ritual  undertaken to receive the gift carries with it a PK clause wherein a roll out of one hundred determines whether the Druid will survive (with modifiers pre-determined by the OOC overseer of the rite.)  If the ritual is successful, the Soul Tree becomes impervious to most fire (save for the most powerful, such as T5 evocation and dragonflame) and mundane tools, but can be susceptible to soul-based magic. The husk, meanwhile, takes on the attributes of his chosen tree; due to the wooden weight of the recreated body, the Tree Lord is much slower than a "normal" version of their frame would be. For similar reasons, they are more susceptible to catching aflame, and can be affected by land blight.

A Tree Lord husk  cannot be harmed by soul-based magic, healed by healing spells or be affected by Control/Communion.

As the tree must re-create the husk when it is destroyed, the process takes twelve (12) OOC hours to complete, including the first time the Tree Lord is reborn.
