  1. Have you not been listening? There's no restriction to who can and cannot learn science and become an engineer or physicist or chemist or alchemist. The regulation is a community thing, the community of scientists and of course the LM's decide whether or not a new type of technology will work. Your fears are ill placed.
  2. Technological advancement, by the way, doesn't mean just weaponry. It means more-easily built structures, better and safer bridges, medicine, and the likes. Of course some people will try to make an elitist system of it, but that once again goes for everything. People will safeguard their secrets and people will innovate themselves and distribute it. You can't sit there and say that all scientists are not going to give things out and make a superiority system. Edit: not to mention that science can be taught with books and don't need a teacher, you use magic as an example but that was for the most part fixed, and science will be the same way. It's not something locked that only a select few people can master, it just requires dedication
  3. The only reason that happened with magic was because magic was inherently so powerful and couldn't be profiteered off of. Controlled (notice the word CONTROLLED) technological advancement adds a competitive economy as well as, well, scientific advancement. Technology can't ever truly be used in an elitist form, especially when everyone is open to the ability to technologically innovate something. I understand your concern but it will not happen, it simply can't. Once someone figures out how to make something they know how to make it, plain and simple. They can then spread their knowledge. Magic is a combat-oriented, system of power. Science by nature is designed to be shared
  4. Anyone is open to learn about science at any time, for instance I just went to the library and got three books on physics. It's unimportant to have a prerequisite knowledge of science to roleplay here, most science will have to be adjusted anyway because we have to fit mech-standard, and you can always learn from others, same as magic and swordplay. Plus no one is being forced to be a scientist in rp, it's a choice. And regardless, as my good friend Questions just said, science will continue regardless of whether or not someone likes it or has a problem with it, and will be rp'ed in the wilds without your knowledge. I feel it would be much better for people to be accustomed to the facet of science in LotC instead of halting all scientific progress altogether because they're not knowledgeable on the subject in question. By not having science, you're breeding ignorance of other roleplay ideas.
  5. That's in everything though, magic, smithing, swordfighting, all of it. Gaining advantages is a normal thing in LotC, and just because you don't want to do "this science business" doesn't mean no one else wants to, and it certainly doesn't mean that we just want this implemented so that we may have an advantage. We all have to start out from square one like everyone else in the server.
  6. So you're basic your disapproval of this because you find it boring? Also if you're doing magic right there's loads of theory to learn, and as with science there is an immediate practicality in everything. And we're not saying that technology isn't advantageous, we're saying it is utilized by everyone or a large amount of people. Also please stop using "boat-plane" or "gun" as an example, we've already vigorously told you that wouldn't be allowed. Also maybe to some people learning mathematics and engineering is fun. You're pretty much stating irrelevant (or already answered) arguments at this point
  7. Not to mention the fact that they're using an argument based on the idea of a lack of regulation. They're using examples that would be immediately weeded out with regulation
  8. To the first part: guns wouldn't be allowed, and aeronautics most definitely wouldn't be allowed To the second part: wasn't the same fierce criticism met with the de-regulation of magic? And the last part about alienating those who don't want to "take science lessons for fun" is hypocritical. You said so yourself, magic requires extreme dedication as well. This doesn't alienate people, it just makes a guideline for how people that wish to RP this way should RP in said way. Also science doesn't give any specific person RP advantages either, the idea of science is to bring more rp to everyone.
  9. You spent all of your arguments on the idea that we wouldn't have enough regulation and control over the system. Why do you simply refuse an idea that adds to roleplay when an idea to regulate it and advance it in a controlled way is presented to you?
  10. To the first part: probably because there wasn't a proper system set up to deal with it To the second part: originally some of that will happen, yes. But as the technology were to grow and expand and as the system were to change with the growing amount of science roleplay, as well as the hoops people would realistically have to jump through to get technology on the server, would make it rather difficult for that to come through. You're making assumptions about a system that hasn't even been instated yet
  11. I'd assume minecraft, as a majority of the system base for mech-standard revolves around specifically the minecraft table
  12. Also, with current lore we have, because of the system set up for adding new ideas and lore people can't just steal ideas from others. We already have a system in place for lore that works and disproves your original problem with the addition of science and slow yet steady technological advancement onto the server
  13. That won't happen though. For instance your argument about the steam engine. In order to get around the originally invented steam engine, you would have to innovate your own way into making it work, thus requiring much more research just to get around the fact that you don't want to waste your time learning how to make a steam engine. Also, by adding a system where players can peer-review other people's scientific work (and also attempt to discredit it) would mean you would have to have a reason as to why the technology works, not just because "it's a copy". For instance say you make a steam engine and post it on the forums and everyone loves it and it works. Say I want to make a steam engine my own way, I couldn't just make it and go "lol", I would have to put it on the peer review of the forums and have everyone else see if it were technologically and mathematically feasible. A lot more than just copying stuff goes into engineering and technological development. It is a lot of math and a lot of trial and error.
  14. Also I recommend a system in which we use for the foundation of measurements, whether that be the metric system or one of our own, crazy LotC-based systems
  15. Is this sarcasm or a serious question?
  16. I wish for everyone to realize that their help and contribution to making this a thing (i.e deciding upon what technologies should and should not be accepted on the server) would be most appreciated. As all of science was not done at a single time by a single person, neither can it be on this server Edit: Also I really appreciate all the people that think this would be a good idea, I hope that together we can help include science and scientific discovery into LotC
  17. To answer the first thing I quoted: Advancements in weapons such as crossbows to a certain degree (maintaining a majority of the original structure: i.e making the body of it longer or the cord of a different type to require more force to be acted upon which in turn makes the weapon more powerful), the sextant would be an awesome idea, and in fact any other sort of medieval instrument designed for land navigation. Also anything revolving around some of the most basic principles of physics and chemistry (forces acting on each other and their calculations etc. etc.) as well as the creation of new formulas (I feel that we should start off from the basics: not even knowing the acceleration of gravity acting upon everyone) And as to the second one: I agree whole-heartedly, except for one thing (which I do both agree and disagree to). I feel that scientific research on the server should be spread in character through the use of books and papers and such, however on second thought and realizing that not many people could be arsed to do that, I agree with the idea of a peer-review roleplay part of the forum
  18. Also, your example was a poor one. Of course when a great technological advancement occurs it will become more and more utilized by the general public in LotC. The same thing happened with magic
  19. It is because of the reason you just stated right there that the LM's and GM's give a specific list of what is and is not possible to do with the technology, so that way people aren't just going on the forums and taking stuff OOCly and applying it in-character. And of course there's going to be copied technology, it happens in the real world all the time. I feel that that would just spur people to be more safe about their technology, and even cause conflicts between other groups of people that they have to resolve in character. And just to repeat, having LM's and the GM's give a detailed list of what is and is not possible could prevent people from having to post on the forums, therefore could help stop some of this MC technological piracy.
  20. While I agree with you that locked magics have to be taught, I disagree with you in thinking that having these multiple different approaches to technology are bad. I feel that that adds a bit of friendly competition, and forces players in the game to learn how to keep their technology a secret, have proper research, and have governments set up patenting systems and the like. I see no way how technology subtracts; it only adds
  21. Assuming people actually follow the fact that it requires a teacher to learn. Also you can put in your character's background that there was a teacher that taught them a specific magic, or have a source of magical knowledge in their background. Same with technology
  22. Such trouble with connecting to server. I'm pretty sure it has to do with the fact that I use linux, curse you Ubuntu!

    1. Rissing

      Rissing

I am having trouble too, no Ubuntu.

  23. I added steam power as an example of being monitored because with it people could potentially use it to make ridiculous advancements in technology over a short period of time
  24. First off, Magics also have the potential to be metagamed, and technology can also be moderated alongside magic. The situations you're describing could be completely rid of if the LM's and GM's worked together to make a statement about the current state of affairs with science, i.e this is what we know, and this is what we don't know. I also stated near the end that my suggestion is that we revert scientific knowledge to the point of the renaissance. If the LM's and GM's could make an in-depth list of what is and is not possible to do, technology could be grown into a potentially fun aspect of RP
