so, if i release war rules can i remove basketball without any concessions then

If you help create a healthier environment with **** to do I’m saying it’d remove itself. It’s about more than just grand scale wars.

on a serious note, ever since stepping down from WT I've jumped on the "grr staff" bandwagon and have disliked staff as much as the next guy, but I have to admit

this backlash is kind of silly

it's cute as a little forum game or whatever, but for there to be riots and protest en masse to the fact that staff are not allowing 100% modernized basketball courts in roleplay is baffling to me, especially with being reminded that this is not a new, shocking revelation. players have attempted to make NBA basketball courts in RP before, and staff have removed it before

how is this even explained in roleplay? better yet, how is this explained to a new player? why is there an undoubtedly modern convention such as a literal basketball court, jerseys, bleachers, etc, in what they were told was a medieval-fantasy roleplaying server? why are basketball courts the special exception when it seems like a major concern for a lot of players is inconsistency regarding staff verdicts?

there's a difference in having your immersion broken by something such as a [!] bird for example, and having your immersion broken by a modern basketball court in the middle of the racial capitol of a minecraft medieval fantasy roleplaying server

even then, you're still allowed to play your sports in-game. you're still allowed to take inspiration and make your own version of a sport such as basketball, there has literally never been any restriction against taking inspiration from pretty much anything ever. do that if u want ur basketball, you could probably make it function the exact same as "modern" basketball even if a court was built to fit our medieval fantasy aesthetic or whatever.

there is literally zero reason this cannot be done

I agree to an extent. I think some people are taking such a hard stance on this because it's giving us a reason to speak out on several things that we find disappointing at the moment. Do I think basketball on LoTC is kind of silly? Sure. Do I also dislike how ridiculous the overregulation and gatekeeping of certain types of RP disguised as moderation has taken over the server? Also yes. There is absolutely nothing happening right now and there haven't been many exciting things to occur outside of staff controlled and staff organized events. LoTC literally advertises itself as a place that allows players to create awesome characters, act out their fantasy lives or be anything/anyone they want to be but if we are being honest, it isn't at this point.

    Is it really though?

You go to a tavern with 2 buddies and someone insults you, do you decide to defend your honor? Nope too bad. That man is on the OOC guard list so he has guard default and you violate the law that says "obey guards always". So now he gets guard default and decides maybe his advantage is CRP. So he and his 10 friends decide to fight you in CRP. You decide that your characters natural reaction is to request your friends help. Guard enters LOOC and complains that if your friends join in that's a raid and they are on cooldown. One friend steps aside but it's now a 2v10. Wait a second that means you finally get PvP default, still a hard fight but you have a chance. Guard knows you could win or escape in PvP combat so he goes back to LOOC. "No wait, Steve here hasn't emoted yet so its only 11 people!" He then PMs or tells Steve in Discord to not emote so they can force CRP. Steve follows orders, after all he only joined a week ago so what this guy tells him must be okay right? In reality he was just given information OOCly to not get involved, going against what his character would naturally do i.e. metagming.

These things turn a situation that could have simply been a fist fight and lead to a feud between two random characters that could develop into something bigger. Now it's foiled and has left a bad taste in everybody's mouth. That is small scale too. There are tons of other loopholes or rule abusing/rule sharking that people use to avoid consequence. Oddly enough the same people that say they want realistic RP and dynamic RP are the same ones that go to OOC the second things don't go their way. Instead of playing their characters, they want rules to protect them from RP that they deem unworthy of their time.

Let's say this guy has been around in Oren for a few years now. He has joined the army and made a ton of friends on his character. He is displeased with how the Emperor is handling things and thinks he is corrupt. (just an example @BenevolentManaclesdon't be mad at me) This guy realizes he has more support than he knew and some think he would be a better leader despite not being of the Horen bloodline. His character decides a coup is the best option for him to take, The Emperor won't hear reason peacefully so he must. Nope, coups are not allowed sorry. He is frustrated and tries a different method, he tries to assassinate the Emperor. With his support, he successfully kills the Emperor but the Emperor doesn't feel like PKing because he had more he wanted to do. PKs aren't enforced so he is alive again but the entire world just watched him die? The guy is stripped of his rank and is now an outlaw. Can he attempt a coup again? No because he would need more than the raid cap allows to do it and because he has been branded a criminal it is considered a raid. His other option is to declare open rebellion and war in which his raid cap would increase. Oh he needs a nation to declare war from? He doesn't have that so he gets frustrated with how this went down and eventually puts less and less effort into the character he thought would be something cool and inevitably quits the server.

Again, something that could have been awesome and something enjoyable is curbed by staff and overregulation instead of moderating a situation like the title Moderator implies. Not to prevent it from happening, but to make sure it goes down in an organized way. His coup could've been the next 18 Year's War or Courland Rebellion that noobs years from now will read on the wiki as they prepare to submit their application. It is added to bios and stories that are handed down and people bond over it. Two characters become best friends because of the war they fought in together and their families go on to become nobles who are revered by heads of militaries for their skill.

These are all things we are missing out on and to me that is the bigger picture. It's less about basketball than it is about overregulation and the curbing of RP whether it be intentional or not. @ScreamingDingo Just my two cents for whatever it's worth to you. I want to enjoy my time when I log on. Not jump in circles around the map because the only other option is tavern RP that I don't truly enjoy. So to me, if people are resorting to playing fake basketball here, I would look at what I can shift their attention toward rather than forcefully removing it altogether. If they want to invent basketball why not help them?

hot take lotc basketball is dumb and bad for rp. absolutely hate the imposition of modern values/concepts/things on lotc

that said, yeah, staff u rly shouldnt be surprised when ppl do this because at this point minecraft basketball is the only medium for inter-nation conflict LOL

also this. basketball obviously isnt my first choice for conflict between nations and it isnt my first choice of entertainment. but seeing as how you've enabled and helped to create a stagnant lackluster environment for literally everyone who doesnt find enjoyment from sitting in a tavern talking about sewing... can you blame us for finding alternate methods? there havent been any significant history altering moves or actions made by players in literal years and I am baffled nobody sees that as a problematic

[!] The wind howled through the forests of Elvenesse as an eerie silence was broken by the thunder of Orcish boots meeting the ground. The warband of Orcs ran through the trees as they made their way to the shores in Elfish lands. They pushed their rowboats into the ocean and followed along the coast before storming the docks of Elvenesse. The Orcs quietly moved about the docks, hiding amongst the crates and nets. It was clear to most that these Orcs intended to catch the Elves by surprise.

After setting themselves up on the docks, the Orcs began to scheme and devise a plan of attack. However, their schemes were interrupted by a familiar sound. The sound of an Elvenessi warhorn echoed throughout the city! The Orcs had been spotted and the Elves were ready for them! Amaesil Vuln’miruel, Commander of the Elfish forces, called forth his bowmen. The Elfs, numbering a solid twelve soldiers, stood defiantly before the band of Orcs. Shouts of pride and bravery could be heard from the Elvenessi natives as they readied themselves for the looming fight.

Rex Azhug’Gorkil, personally leading his forces on the raid, stood ready to face the Elvenessi Commander. “Zheeldz!” he called out, as the Elfs readied their bows. The Orcs, seemingly more organized than during the previous conflicts, banded together and formed a shield wall. “Loose!” shouted Amaesil, a fiery tone taking presence in his voice, as a volley of arrows was unleashed upon the Orcish forces. The volley of arrows, after bouncing off the shields of the War Nation’s forces, was soon followed by a shout from Azhug and Burgharz. “CHARGE!” shouted the pair of Orcs as they rushed forward into the Elvenessi soldiers!

BANG! The clash of the forces, so loud that it made a Dwarfish mine seem silent, was heard by all in the city! The Orcs, numbering a mere eight in comparison to the Elves twelve, fought ferociously! Burgharz swung his blade, cleaving Elves left and right. The outnumbered Orc soon found himself surrounded by five of the Elvenessi soldiers, a challenge the green giant would never shy away from. One by one, Burgharz slew the Elves where they stood, until only Amaesil remained. Amaesil, in an act of bravery or perhaps folly, stepped forward to fight Burgharz. After a fearsome battle, Burgharz once again emerged victorious!

Seeing their commander fall, the Elvenessi forces began to lose heart. Fleeing back into the city, they turned their back on the Orcs, a mistake they will not soon forget as they were cut down one by one. Rex Azhug claimed the heads of three before the final soldier, an Elf by the name of Pardek, escaped to tell the tale. The Orcs divided their loot and headed home to Krugmar.

The Elves were warned, and Krugmar delivered.

[!] In the throne room of Krugmar, Rex Azhug’Gorkil addressed the Orcs of the War Nation. His voice echoed throughout the halls as the citizens of Krugmar stood in silence.

“Brothers!” he began “We issued our demands to Elvenesse. We asked for nothing more than justice for the wrongs that had been performed upon us. I gave them three Krug days to reach out and accept our demands. Three Krug days went by and still, I received no reply. Today, I reached out to the Twiggy Rex and summoned him to Krugmar to accept the demands brought before him. This was an offer that he refused.”

[!] The crowd began to roar and shout in disapproval before Azhug raised his hand, calling for silence so he may continue.

“He refused to make amends for the wrongdoings of him and his people. Anyone who read my missive would know that I offered him a solution. I offered him a way out and he refused. I am an Orc of my word, as the Codes of Krug demand, and I intend to follow through with my promises.”

[!] Azhug’Gorkil unsheathed an axe from his waist. As he suddenly raised it above his head, the crowd of gathered Orcs began to cheer and roar with excitement. With a powerful swing, Azhug buried the axe into the throne of Krugmar.

“I warned you twiggiez. Consider this my declaration of war upon you. Let this mark the beginning of the First Tribute Wagh of Elvenesse. Let this mark the beginning of our fight for justice and honor.”

[!] Azhug’Gorkil roared, his eyes filled with a rage few have seen displayed by him before. Azhug leaped from the throne and headed straight for the square where the celebrations began. Several Orcs danced around the bonfire as others began painting their skin with war paints. Orcs tested their strength against one another, all while the tower of smoke grew higher. “They will see these flames from Elvenesse.” said the Rex “They will know what it means…” he paused before looking to his fellow Orcs.

    “WAAAAAAAAAGGGHHHH!"

[!] An official declaration of war was spread throughout the lands. Upon reading it you would be informed of the events described above. The declaration was sealed with the official seal of Krugmar and signed by several leaders of the War Nation.

The whole grrr bandit thing is just a bad stereotype that got engraved into players heads after bad encounters with previous bandits. It's not the hard to avoid bandits if ya don't want your role-play to get ruined. Just don't use the main roads lol.

Anyways, thank you Ferrymen for providing good quality banditing roleplay. Every interaction i've had with a ferryman member has been enjoyable & a good laugh.

Why do we call it ruined roleplay? because not everyone on the server conforms to what someone else wants the RP to be? everyone talks up dynamic events and RP but cries when the events have negative impacts. Just because you don't get your way doesn't mean RP was ruined.

Edit: realize how this could be misconstrued at targeting you specifically so I wanted to clarify. I appreciate your attitude toward Ferrymen and you'll be met with equal respect for sure. You just happened to use a phrase I see all too often so I used your comment as a base for my own.

  8. Labelling the Orenian community as "the" lotc community doesnt support your pathetic attempts at disproving this post @orenshills. If you wanna talk about a group that has been constantly told to go away ask yourself why you are on your 7th or 8th iteration of your nation. All I've seen is you guys wanting to hold everybody else accountable while neglecting to do the same for your own guys. Toxicity isn't a term that only applies when you want it to.
