I liked Morrowind's journal system a lot and the fact that joining certain factions had consequences with others. Oblivion had more enjoyable sidequests and more memorable npcs for me.

I'm just not entirely a fan of the game holding my hand, you know? But I totally understand what you mean, hell, even the arena companion npc gives me fond memories.

Yeah, I had a lot of fun in Morrowind getting lost on the way to places and exploring off the beaten track. I just have little motivation to repeat the faction lines because of how long and tedious some are. I feel Oblivion had the balance right with having a decent story in each without making your character seem like 'the chosen one' in every faction like Skyrim did.
