    A Thesis on the Dark

    -By the Immortal Loreholder.

“In times of yore, times from which many of us dreamed of being alive, the Arch Daemon cursed our lands with foul beasts and equally foul arts. The Undead of Iblees, the Harbingers and beyond are all dangers of legend that have faded with time. Long since, the arts we curse and disgrace have changed purpose drastically.

In Axios, or in Atlas itself, you can already note the difference in the behaviour regarding the tainted and the weavers. They no longer seek the destruction of the Descendants, but rather they seclude themselves in their own covens, one in the Tainted Mountain, and the Temple of Xion, epicenter of the followers of the Old Dark; Xionism. Never have I seen such quiet, passive dark. And fret not, t’is not a problem. In my thoughts, I see the weavers and all the others thought-to-be dark arts practicioners as trying to help us. Aid us from the claws of the Gods and their blind servants. Tahariae, Xan, Aeriel. All of these from which come Clerics, Paladins and Ascended respectfully. These blind followers, these maleficar were the ones that aided Gazardiel on Axios, on his quest to purge the land from Descendant filth.

These are the ones you must fret, good men and women of Atlas. Not the Old Dark, not the weavers, tainted and victims of undeath. These maleficar are snakes. They seek nothing but the destruction of those afflicted, in pain. They seek naught to try and help those by reverting what caused their ultimate fate. They only seek death and destruction to all those that are not in the standards they have established. I see reasoning, of course, in fearing the taint, the dark. I myself do. Though I must re-assure; Iblees is a danger of yore, only to be feared in history books.

One mustn’t instantly relate a weaver, a tainted being to be instantly a servant of Iblees. I, a graven, wizened with time, am myself a Xionist. I can assure whoever wants re-assurance, that I not only do not follow Iblees, but despise his actions against my once-brethren, the descendants. His actions sought destruction to all we knew, and possibly even to the arts you curse and disgrace.

This is all I have to say on the Dark, the victims of undeath and the supposed ‘Light’, maleficar, blind servants under hungering Gods."

Making it so mystics, are required for semi-corporeal to exist is quite an issue. You're turning them into inferior ghouls rather than the alternative to ghosts for wrapping up loose ends. Ghouls already require a creator and a corpse. A graven is a shadow of a soul created by the intense drive to finish the task they left undone in life. Why would a mystic randomly create a being and then not control it? Let alone not put it into a more powerful form to begin with?

    Why wouldn't they?

But I get where you're coming from.

A semi-corporeal may not necesarily be created. (Again, subject to change)

Though what you don't seem to understand is that, regardless if the graven serves or not the mystic that created it has full control over it. The mystic, if it's near or has contact with the Graven may do as they please with it. They are bound to a life pact. Should the mystic meet death and ultimately a possible PK, the Graven is left masterless and trying to complete it's task... What then?

If a semi-corporeal finishes it's task, it may turn to it's mystic and say 'hey, transcend me into a spectral or a corporeal so I can keep living and perform more tasks'

Gravens are plain and quite simple as they currently stand. They need more flavour. People are unatraccted by Gravens because they just lack the 'Wow' factor. They're literally suits of armour bound to something they were commited to in life. One cannot expect to already be created a Spectral. No mystic with a healthy mind would do such.

However, what you asked is the same thing as asking 'why would a Lich ascend a ghoul into a Lich'? It can become more powerful than himself, so why would he even ordain the ghoul in the first place?

  3. 6 minutes ago, The Templar said:

I recently experienced all this and more. I was the Ivory Knight, the graven of the former paladin boss Ianril the Waveharp. Unlike Ghouls, gravens can never be anything more unless they are enslaved by a mystic and shoved into a suit of stone. Gravens are underpowered, yes, but restricting them to be another cool thing mystics can make and enslave defeats the point. Gravens should be ghosts capable of performing a corporeal task, nothing more. They are a way to tie up loose ends, not the end in and of themselves. Perhaps a better change would be to allow them to eventually turn into wights, much how ghouls can turn into liches and darkstalkers.

Wights are the final forms of Mystics. That would be overpowered for a simple armoured spectre. This re-write gives Gravens their own little flavour. Corporeals are big and bulky and are bound to servitude in a task established by their creator/mystic. Semi-corporeal are not bound to serviture, instead bound to the task they were commited to when they lived. Spectrals, since they are stronger, require 2 mystics to be created and are normally given to big individuals with bigger minds the ability to live longer on a task established by their creator. They have access to magic in exchange of more frail forms.

I don't know about you, but I don't only thing it's a rather well-balanced, fair re-write but a new height graven players can aspire to go.

If you want the sort-of ascending through ranks stuff ghouls have, it's no worry to add the option for Semi-Corporeals to receive some sort of 'ordainment', where they complete something specific given by their creator and, again, their creator chooses what they will become: Spectral or Corporeal.

It's a WIP after all, any criticism is welcome, so long as it's constructive.

  4. 1 minute ago, The Templar said:

No thank you. The point of being a Graven is that you manifest after your task is left unfinished, driven to complete it. Requiring a mystic for the creation of this destroys the purpose of the CA.

Yea, and you get killed by everything. If someone throws a literal silver spoon at you, you die, because of how weak gravens are. They lost their only ability (graven's stare) and they need some love. Gravens shouldn't be free-to-make, because they have potential. Ghosts I understand, they're everyday spectres. Beings that can take the form of suits of armor shouldn't be as undepowered as they are. Note: I did not remove the tasks. Each graven still has it's task, regardless of the subtype. Spectrals have tasks as well as Semi-Corporeals.

    Gravens

    (A graven in plate armour)

Gravens are rather simple concepts. A spectre created by a Mystic either through a specific ritual which itself is rather basic. The process of stabbing or killing someone with an ectoplasm imbued blade will ultimately produce one of these semi-corporeal beings, who take on forms that range from simple robes to a big suit of plate armour. Any, from man to dwarf can be met with such terrible or rewarding destiny.

    Subtypes:

    Corporeal Gravens

These gravens are more sturdy and unlike their counterparts, they lack a weakness to normal steel and may adopt bigger and bulkier suits of armor to better protect the frail ectoplasmic form they are given in undeath. That comes with a cost. While Corporeal Gravens may be bulkier and stronger, they are not awarded a ‘copycat’ soul and hence cannot learn magic. They are slower, and are less prone to develop advanced rational thought (like advanced mathematics, for an example). They carry a task like every graven and may perform such the way their master desires.

    Red Lines:

-Corporeal Gravens require a specific CA and do not require a creator. If they transcend, however, a CA is required for said subtype and a creator IRP is needed.

-They can wear bigger plate armour, but falter in movement and general agility.

-They lack a soul, and for that, may not learn any type of magic. They also cannot develop things such as Further Alchemy, due to their limited mindset in exchange of sheer strenght.

-They have a limited mindset, and may not comprehend more advanced things, for an example, they sometimes fail to understand how magic comes to be or how it is practiced

-Even though they are bulky, they cannot be over 7 feet tall.

-Weakness to Holy magic and mage gold.

    Semi-Corporeal Gravens

These creatures are your everyday Graven. They all bear a singular task and are bound to the location they were created, unless told otherwise by the Mystic that made them. Semi-Corporeal Gravens are, for Mysticism and general spectres, what ghouls would be in Necromancy. However, unlike their Corporeal counterparts, they can expand their mindset, though are limited to understanding how magic works and nothing past that. Their weakened minds cannot absorb much information at once and are sometimes confused, if not completely baffled.

When a mystic desires, they can ‘ordain’ the graven by giving them a specific, one time task. If they complete it, it’s up to said mystic if they will transcend into Corporeal Gravens or Spectral Gravens. (Much like Lich and Darkstalker for Ghouls)

    Red Lines

-Semi-Corporeal Gravens require a Specific CA and creator to be played (The Creator must be a T5 Mystic)

-They cannot wear plate armour, and instead go for chainmail and leather-oriented garnments.

-They do not have a soul, so they cannot practice any type of magic. They can, however, become Alchemists and have a Further Alchemy application, but they need an OOC Overseer.

-Cannot be over 6’5” and cannot lift more than 80 lbs.

-Weakness to holy magic, mage gold, steel and aurum.

    Spectral Gravens

Even though Gravens are spectres themselves, these gravens are transcending and lack an interaction with the world. They cannot touch, feel or manipulate mundane things. However, to compensate their lack of a body, they are awarded with a ‘copycat’ soul. Spectral Gravens are given 1 T5 magic slot and 1 T4 magic slot. Their mindset may expand to learn new things, and develop new, creative thoughts that may be used for good or for bad. Unlike their counterpart, Spectrals are not bound to their masters, and are given the option to go out and be set free, or serve their master(s) and possibly get rewarded. ((Up to each Graven-Creator relationship. However, the master still has full control over the graven when it can))

    SPECTRALS CANNOT LEARN:

    -Naztherak

    -Any Holy magic.

    -Mysticism

    -Shade

    -Druidism.

    -Shamanism.

    -Enaction of Yeu

    -Ascended.

    -Cognatism.

    -Atronach Forging.

    -Shade.

    -Azdrazi.

    -Fi.

    -Soul Puppetry

    (Subject to change)

    Red Lines

-They cannot wear plate at all, and may only take form of robes or cloth. Up to each Spectral.

-Spectrals require TWO creators, one being a T5 mystic and one being a T4.

-Spectrals can only master 1 magic and get a TA and dominate 1 other (T4)

-Spectrals are useless in a fight unless they have a magic that can aid them. They have a frail, thin form.

-Cannot be over 7 feet tall and weight almost nothing.

-Spectrals are weak to all Holy Magics, Fi’ and to the Mystic they belong.

-Should a spectral try to pass the 2 magic slot rule, the Graven’s body wouldn’t be able to handle it, and it would be simply vanished from the mortal plane, causing the Graven to not only lose the magic it tried to achieve, but whatever others it had.

(Scion, the Immortal Loreholder, Graven of Yore)

Aside from the frames Gravens adopt, say robes or a suit of armour, they all share one thing in common: an ectoplasmic, frail and weak state underneath their shell. They come in two color variants: light blue and light green. Their face resembles that of their past self, though it can change with time, depending on the graven. In their chest, should such be revealed from the coil they cower inside, resides a sparkling, violent flame that is the same color as the graven’s body. In a Spectral, this flame can be associated to a copycat soul, and it is less violent, and more soothing. Corporeal and Semi-Corporeal gravens have a flame that cracks and rumbles when exposed. The eyes of a graven are a reflex to it’s Flame. It’s soul. They are small, dark green or dark blue orbs that make up to eye slots, and are responsible for the infamous Graven’s Stare.

    GRAVEN’S STARE.

The Graven’s Stare is an ability that if used correctly, can save, or if used wrongly, doom a Graven. While spectral gravens do not have access to that, Corporeal and Semi-Corporeal gravens may choose to stare someone in the eyes during a combat. What this causes on the opponent is a pitched pain that lasts for the person’s next 3 emotes ((Notice: They have to be big emotes, you can’t just *exhale *inhale *exhale to get it over. They have to be detailed)). Graven’s Stare is a ability to the types of gravens that do not have what a spectral has, and is the alternative to a strong magic.

    DEATH AND REBIRTH.

When a Graven dies, independent of its type, the form it took shatters to many pieces. The meaning of that is, if the graven took upon the form of a suit of armour, when they encounter death, said armour crumbles before the attacker’s feet, and the graven’s flame-soul floats, before shooting off to a safe place, where the crumbles of armor reform and the graven takes upon it’s form once more.

((NOTE: THIS PROCESS TAKES 1 IRL DAY))

    DESTRUCTION RITUAL.

If a player abuses their powers or just poorly roleplays the graven, it’s creator, OOC or IRP, may reverse their condition. If they abuse a spectral graven, the mystic can revert their ordainment back to a Semi-Corporeal. This is mechanic to control the number of roleplayers and the quality of their roleplay.

    TL;DR and clarifications.

-Adds subtypes to gravens, 2 with additional stuff, 1 ‘normal’ graven.

-Re-adds the graven’s stare, which was shelved.

-Adds the need of a IRP Mystic creator, though existing Gravens that do not have a creator will need another CA and in the ‘Briefly explain the lore’ part, they need to explain Graven lore and how they came to be. Current gravens that had a creator may take upon a subtype according to their own graven.

-Spectral Gravens are granted a soul and 1 T5 Slot and 1 T4 Slot.

-Removes completely the existence of 2nd generation gravens and ‘T3 fire evo’ to them.

-Corporeal gravens do NOT have a ‘fleshy’ body, they are just sturdier than your everyday graven.

-Spectrals CAN lean Necromancy, though cannot reach T5 with it. The only arts they can master are:

    1. All Evocations

    2. Arcanism

    3. Voidal Shifting

-Any more questions, put in the comments, and if I forgot something that you think needs to be added, PM me, this is a WIP and is subject to change.

    EDIT:

    ADDED SEMI-CORPOREAL AND CORPOREAL WEAKNESESS.

ADDED TRANSCENDENCE TO CORPOREAL OR SPECTRAL TO SEMI-CORPOREALS.

    TWEAKED TRANSCENDENCE AND SEMI-CORPOREAL CREATION.

    ADDED DESTRUCTION RITUAL

Briefly explain the lore behind this construct or creature:

Voidal Horrors are creatures beyond mortal comprehension. Their twisted form comes from their birthplace; the Void. There are two variations of Voidal Horrors: Lesser and Greater. They are beyond natural harm, like disease, both carry a powerful blood that can be used by Blood Mages and both speak the primitive tongue of Moonspeak. Greater Horrors may manifest their Mindplane. Horrors, being Void born, are said to be chaos incarnate. They all come in different shapes and sizes to their kin, with the theme of cartilage-based tendrils. They are small and capable of movement, either by legs, tendrils or some may simply float. Horrors are frail and feeble in physical form, and are limited to lifting 50 pounds in total. No Horror may wear armour, and that'd make them certainly dead during combat. What makes them live on is their high intelligence, completely capable of diplomacy and often go for pacifism. Being voidborn, Horrors can learn an art simply by reading a book which details. From that knowledge, a Horror can sel-teach itself, only needing an OOC overseer. They can learn: All arcane arts, atronach forging, blood magic, further alchemy, voidal feeling, soul puppetry, arcane displacement, cognatism and Naztherak. A Voidal Horror's mind is called a 'Mindplane'. Described by a scholar as a small spot the Horrors claim for themselves in the Void, from which they return to should they meet worldly harm. A space of nightmares and dreams born from the Horror's thoughts.

Because who the hell wants to role play a brainless minion for more than a day or two? It's not interesting. It gives you like one or two options for RP. It's STUPID. This isn't JUST a story. It's also a game. People like to enjoy themselves.

Enjoy themselves by working hard up the ranks to get ordainment. Be a good servant to ascend and create more like those. The point of ghouldom is for you to grow stronger, until your master sees fit to reward you, that reward being ordainment. You can't expect to simply fly straight up the ranks.

Morghuuls have feelings. I had a whole discussion with the MT overseeing me about it. They have feelings-- Now that isn't to say they have normal human feelings. They have dulled feelings, deadened feelings. And only when they've fed.

Exactly the point of this ammendment. Why would rotting, decaying corpses in a starve for lifeforce have time to even think about trying have feelings?

  9. 2 hours ago, TheCritsyBear said:

I'm comparing them because they're all creatures made to be servants.

But all of them are way better than ghouls and such is stated in their lore. THEIR LORE allows people to be the way they play those creatures GHOUL LORE doesn't, and people like you seem to be forgetting that and RP ghouls with feelings.

  10. 6 minutes ago, TheCritsyBear said:

I thought the whole point of morghuuls was that they weren't normal ghouls. They're MORE ghouls.

Seriously though I like my ghoul the way it is, which is a hungry cursed shadow of a person with an inability to resist attacking people when presented the opportunity but is still intelligent enough to feel guilty after he's fed because he was a good dude when he was alive.

What you're presenting would make playing a morghuul worse than playing a spriggan. Even if they were made into an exclusively servile creature, compare them to others.

Atronachs are intended to serve and depend on mages to function. They have entire personalities and can seek their own goals.

Muyakelg are pretty much flesh golems, but they're full people who usually want to serve their creators.

Golems are pretty much robots, who while fairly dependent on others for RP, have a unique flavor of RP that can be thoroughly enjoyable for them and others around them.

Spriggans have total sentience and are bound to serve druids, the only difference between them and a person being that they can't talk.

Paleknights are actually people. Just ghost people in rocks who don't like living people.

    What would ghouls be?

Emotionless, expressionless, personality-less, one-dimensional characters who are literally lore-bound to do absolutely nothing but feed unless someone forces them to do something else. There is no degree of freedom at all, and no reason to play them unless you want a character who you can attack people with without repercussions or you get a kick out of serving a necromancer.

    -1

How can you compare a paleknight (final form of a ghost), an atronach (arcanic construct MADE to be good) and a golem (made to be powerful) to a shambling, rotten corpse? Ghouls aren't meant to be free. They are meant to be bound by their eternal hunger and hunt for life force. Ghouls and Morghuuls are the same thing, by the way, MOrghuul are just more sentient, but still lack a personality or common sense. So get off your high boots.

  11.

Ammendment: Plain and simple. Ghouls and Morghuuls are not intelligent, strategical warhulks that can beast through waves of enemies. They are resistant flesh shields made to serve their necromancer with mindless eating and fearless in combat. Seeing ghouls able to pull out strategic moves, including myself, meks me cringe, considering current lore states otherwise. So what this proposes, is that we should make Ghouls essentialy smaller less strong ologs, with limited mental capability, but prowess in combat, due to their high resistance to normal attacks (that aren’t aurum) and their lack of emotions, such as fear.

The amount of intelligence a ghoul receives is interly up to the necromancer, though said is limited as to what it can grant the shambler. Nothing past basic strategies (dodging) or anything past common sense (social skills, emotions) is strictly limited.

Also for this ammendment, remove the whole 'ghouls reform' thing and set it so that their necromancers need to revive them should they die. Until then, the ghoul mustn't be played, as it is 'dead', awaiting for it's master to revive. If the necromancer fails to revive the ghoul in time, say, 1 irl week, the ghoul is deemed dead, and a new CA will need to be posted in order for the ghoul to be revived and able to be played again.
