The Royal Curator (Herzen Curatzen) serves as the chief curator of Hanseti-Ruska’s history, archives, library, and museum, acting on behalf of the Crown in all matters of knowledge dissemination, maintenance, transcription, protection, and procurement. The Curator also carries the authority of the monarch to liaise with other nations to exchange knowledge outside the borders of Hanseti-Ruska.

Owing to the efforts of the current Royal Curator, Davyd Edzar Colborn, the role has expanded. The hope is to create a new office that might facilitate an area of creativity that Haense did not readily support before. Scholars, artists, and artisans. AS A COURT NEEDS ITS QUEEN, SO TOO DOES IT NEED ITS GRAND LORD. In the most recent years, as the nation finds its footing, Lady Mahaut van Leuven steps down from Grand Lady. After nineteen years of service in the position, a service which has been most diligent and most extraordinary, in which she has had to serve and maintain the Royal Court without the guidance of a Queen at her side, and one which has brought reform and restoration of the Royal Courts into the Asserala Court. In her final words of counsel, Lady Mahaut proposed a successor that equally honored the final desires of King Karl IV. 

His frequent presence within Castle Lesanov and the Royal City of New Valdev, his passion for the Haeseni people, and his devotion to Haeseni traditions and culture. These things make Anaksandr Amador a strong successor, and the Crown thus appoints Lord Anaksandr Amador to the position of Grand Lord of Hanseti-Ruska and the Asserala Court.

“Have faith in that goodness, okay?” 

Mahaut was merely a distressed teenage girl when she first heard those words from the former Baron Korvacz. Time erased whatever event brought her to Korvacz’s doorstep that day, but she never forgot the lesson she learned. It melded well into her young and growing heart, to not only be good but trust others to do the same.

It was the same reason that the humble Lady Mahaut sat across from Queen Juliya, years later, in her twenties. She wanted to make her mother proud, to do good like her, and the queen she served. Despite Mahaut’s lack of a formal education or prior experience with the Royal Court, she had enough prospects for Queen Juliya to honor her as the Crow Warden. There was good to augur between black feathers and flight patterns, so Mahaut upheld the position steadfastly. She enjoyed it too, for the manner of excitement it brought herself and those which the Crow Warden held dearest.

Mahaut, deep down, would’ve stayed like that for the rest of her days. She would have woken up every morning to venture into the Karoswald or the Aestmarch, at least, to check on her feathered friends. She could’ve written another volume or two on their behaviors, or how crows approached other species. It was good for Mahaut, and for the kingdom, in a duty that suited her best. That was not her path for long, though. It diverged from her beloved woods to circle the capital and its castle.

Or maybe it was like a tree falling into the road, when Svetlana set down the paper and quill before Mahaut. She wished for Mahaut to be the Deputy Grand Lady, and all it took was Mahaut’s signature to make such come true. Never, in the near decade of Mahaut’s service to the Royal Court, did she covet the role. Mahaut still signed her name in ink, though, because she could act with good will again, for others. And she did.

Dance lessons, gentle counseling, festivals, construction of stalls, and whatever else kept spirits raised was enough, it seemed. Not good deeds, but signs of a good job done. Mahaut was an obvious choice in succeeding Svetlana, after only half a decade in her newest role. So amidst the flowing water of the church fountain, and the roses being in bloom, Mahaut found herself in possession of that rose gold bulava and the phantom of her predecessor. She was now Grand Lady in every right. As Mahaut adjusted to the weight of the Rose Bulava in her hand and the lonelier halls of Lesanov, a greater burden and absence fell onto the kingdom; the death of Queen Juliya.

Mahaut was never the closest with Juliya, but Mahaut would not be where she is today, were it not for the queen’s nudge in a certain direction. Further direction was lost upon Mahaut. Even if she was a councilor, even if she did good things and garnered the approval of the Lady Palatine and young King over the years, Mahaut still found little trust in herself. She struggled to find the strength to continue down the path as it wound in other directions, or other issues beyond court entangled her. 

Somewhere in between those struggles, the children that Mahaut occasionally doted upon stood level with her–or taller. Anaksandr Amador was one of them, from a boy that learned to dance with her in Balian’s royal ballroom to a capable and astute young man set to inherit something far greater than himself by blood. Mahaut, with the best intentions, sought him out to inherit another great thing by merit, too. 

“Mea seat needs a worthy successor, who can be heard ag provide ve Royal Court ag future Koenas with a much needed voice,” Mahaut told Anaksandr this in earnest, before admitting, “Ea lost mine with Juliya.” He was a younger man, who could keep up with an equally young king. Those vines of strife that wrapped around Mahaut’s feet and hands were the same that closed around her throat. She was not choked of her devotion, but ambition. It rotted within her worse than anything abandoned in the woods.

Mahaut could’ve stayed like that for another year or two, but not lucky enough to sink into the earth yet, like any other rampant decay. Instead, a younger, fiery woman cleaved the rot from her and sundered the snares. It was the work of another queen and only the start. Abruptly, Nadya had Mahaut and Anaksandr both trail after her into Castle Lesanov, to huddle within the Grand Lady’s office and see the Queen’s will be done.

During courtly outlines, jottings of conduct, and frequent references, Mahaut listened to the exchanges of Anaksandr and Nadya. “Hope,” rang out, something that Mahaut’s first queen built her court upon. In that moment, it created a dull ache within the Grand Lady, before it eased into a sense of warmth. She felt remorse for what the court had lost, but hope for what it would gain. In that culmination, as she sat in her chair, Mahaut found faith. Faith, that the spirit of Haense is in good hands.

And that was enough.

THE RETIREMENT OF MAHAUT VAN LEUVEN.

THIRTY-TWO YEARS OF MY LIFE WENT INTO THE ROYAL COURT. Along my journey, I went from wielding whistles of crowsong as the defunct Crow Warden to wielding the Rose Bulava as Grand Lady. Every step on this path, no matter how light or heavy, has been the greatest honor I could’ve asked for. There is a point, however, where hands like mine cannot raise the bulava as high as they once did. There is, in truth, no reason I have to keep holding onto it.

From the Crown to its vassals, I see such fervor in the generation after mine. In the way they battle with blades or song, and in the way they handle culture and law. I may not know every one of their names, nor every detail upon their faces, but I am proud of them, regardless. It is their time to lead–it has been their time to lead. My last act as Grand Lady is recognizing such. My tenure is over, after nineteen years.

To the next Grand Lady, or Grand Lord, I bid you this: I did not start on this road knowing where it would end. Neither will you. Hold fast onto your fellow travelers and do not be afraid to take their hand when you fall or slow down. There is greater strength in you, and Haense, when you act in solidarity, not isolation.

RESTRUCTURING OF THE PALATIAL OFFICE

I have to start this by thanking you, the people, for receiving my appointment as well as you have. As well as the Regency that I had to supervise until the untimely death of his Royal Majesty, King Karl IV. I will forever be grateful to him. I must also thank his Royal Majesty, King Joren, for his continued faith in me to serve as Lord Palatine and Chancellor of the Realm.

I have taken it upon myself to prioritise examining the Office of the Lord Palatine, what I wish for it to be, and how it currently functions. Lord Palatine is a truly unique position upon the King’s Council. I am his second-in-command, I am the head of the Aulic Council. The work that I do is not like that of any of the other positions upon the Aulic Council. The Lord Treasurer, for example, has ample reason to hire plenty of stewards to help him collect taxes, sell houses, manage our national shops, et cetera, it would not be possible for the Lord Treasurer to do it all alone. But my work is about assisting the Crown and guiding His Royal Majesty’s Aulic Council. It is a rather personal thing, to be entrusted as Lord Palatine.

Despite this, the Lord Palatine has not only been expected to be second-in-command and head of the Aulic Council, but also to maintain an Office of the Lord Palatine, containing Kommissars, Palatial Scribes, Palatial Liaisons, and such other positions throughout the years. I think of this as a sort of remnant from the early days of Haeseni Independence, during which we attempted to establish our own bureaucratic institutions, to make up for the Orenian ones we were no longer a part of. This was, of course, well-intended, but has ended up creating roles which are either unfilled or ineffective.

I wish to eliminate this ineffective and unnecessary bureaucracy within the Aulic Government, and therefore I am restructuring the Office of the Lord Palatine into the Secretariat of the Lord Palatine. Many of the positions of the former Office shall cease to exist, as I wish to instead deploy the manpower to the other Aulic Offices.

I still hope to carry on the tradition of the Lord Palatine taking wards. My own generation is soon to marry and have children, and I am looking forward to taking in my own group of these as wards. I wish to create capable statesmen of them that would be of value to my own position, and to any other position within the Realm.

The Secretariat of the Lord Palatine is the office serving directly below the Lord Palatine of Hanseti-Ruska, the Chancellor and second-in-command of the Kingdom. The Lord Palatine holds great importance within the Kingdom, and as such the Secretariat lends its gentle hand to all matters and aspects of government.

As a part of the Secretariat of the Lord Palatine sits the Deputy Palatine and the Palatial Secretary, in addition to the Palatial Wards. It is possible that additional positions may be created within the Secretariat in the future, should the times deem it necessary; if such is the case, this document shall be dutifully updated.

The Deputy Palatine is the right hand of the Lord Palatine, and may act on their behalf in their absence within reason. They provide a great deal of administrative support, such as aiding in the drafting of Edicts, Decrees, and other documents of importance to the Realm. In the light of their lack of specified duties and responsibilities, the Deputy Palatine is a most versatile role that may lend its aid wherever necessary.

There is currently a vacancy for Deputy Palatine. We are not seeking to appoint a Deputy Palatine at the moment.

The Palatial Secretary is responsible for managing and coordinating the schedule of the Lord Palatine, as well as taking notes and keeping records. The role is therefore essentially in ensuring that the Lord Palatine is able to upkeep their desired level of transparency with the public.

The current Palatial Secretary is Caliope Colborn.

The Palatial Wards are the future of the bureaucracy of the Kingdom, coming from a variety of families and backgrounds from the Kingdom, these young people are taught, educated, and granted various tasks by the Lord Palatine, in the hopes of making them suited for government in their adult future.

There are currently no Palatial Wards.

Her Highness also must be thanked for their help as a regent on the regency council during the minority of King Karl IV. Having offered us her resignation citing that it is time to retire to allow the next generation to serve their Kingdom, we have followed her advice and found an energetic replacement to act in tandem with His Majesty as a guiding hand for the Kingdom.

As is the prerogative of the Crown, we do hereby appoint Firr Tomasz van ve Karoswald @garentoft to the position of Lord Palatine on account of his selfless and unbiased advice thus far as well as having displayed competency and a way with the people of the Kingdom that would be a boon to the Crown. King Karl IV entrusts Firr Tomasz with the Gold Bulava as Lord Palatine of Hanseti-Ruska to be wielded in his name.

Let this appointment be recorded in the annals of our history, and let all subjects acknowledge and respect the authority of the appointee and their office. We thank Prinzenas Milena once more for their years of leal service and pray they have a peaceful retirement.

AS THE GENERATIONS CHANGE, SO TOO MUST TIME PRESS US ONWARD. As a child, I dreamt often of the great men and women who had led the Haeseni to greatness in time long passed. The formidable Prince Otto Alimar, or the diligent Iosif Basrid were not far from my thoughts when it came to my girlhood aspirations of one day becoming Palatine of the realm. At that time, I was the youngest child of a dead heiress. I had thought my destiny was to be forgotten - perhaps only a footnote in the telling of our nation’s history.

All of that changed when I decided that my life meant little when compared to that of Koeng Ivan VIII’s own, flinging myself into the path of an explosive potion meant to claim his life by the hand of a would-be assassin. From that day forward, my existence was entirely transformed. Wedded to a prince and named as Lady Emissar, I was entrusted with much and more by the House of Barbanov-Bihar in those years that followed. Eventually, my diligent service to the Crown was further rewarded upon the retirement of Count Erik Kortrevich as Lord Palatine. It was I who was named as his successor - the first royal woman to assume the cherished Golden Bulava.

For eighteen years, I have given every piece of my being to my beloved kingdom and the Haeseni who reside within it. From the day the Golden Bulava was pressed into my hands, I felt a greater calling - a destiny to be fulfilled. Through the woes of King Marius III, who was so often bedridden or otherwise disinterested in the day-to-day governance of his inherited land, I paved a path forward that ensured our kingdom’s continued survival. He placed his faith in me to not only guide his subjects, but to also raise his eldest son to manhood. That was perhaps the greatest gift of all.

His Majesty, King Karl IV is one of my proudest achievements. A young leader worthy of his name and the throne he sits upon. A man of strong mind and formidable will, who is more like a son than a nephew by marriage. But as so many mothers are oft to do, there comes a time when we must allow our children to lead themselves - to make their own choices. The regency is long over, and the King is a boy no longer.

Thus, with my fullest trust placed in his ability to lead the Haeseni people into this Karolean Age, I hereby announce my retirement from my position as LADY PALATINE, effective immediately. I trust that my successor shall serve my royal nephew faithfully, representing the wishes and desires of this upcoming generation.

It has been my greatest honor to serve as your Palatine. Born to be irrelevant, I only wished to be of some use. I believe I have far exceeded expectations.

TREASURY REPORT I

FOREWORD

I have been Lord Treasurer now for six years, and in that time the treasury has continued to grow steadily and without issue as they had during the time of my predecessor Lord Heinrik Ludovar. It is the philosophy of this Office that the money a nation accrues is no good if it is not put to use in the betterment of the lives of its people. Within this report, I will present the work already undertaken by this Office, and future plans for how this Office intends to spend the money which the people have entrusted to the Crown.

INTERNAL AFFAIRS

Early on in my tenure as Treasurer, I was suddenly taken ill and forced into bedrest for some time. Despite my illness and incapacitation, the duties of the Treasury were not hindered, mostly due to the efforts of Brother Stefan Ludovar. Lord Stefan handled himself and the affairs of the treasury with the utmost care, allowing nothing to slip through the cracks. There was no service undone, no responsibility missed, no record unwritten under his watchful eye. For this reason, in honor of the dutiful service which he has already rendered to this office, I am proud to appoint him as my Deputy Treasurer. May he continue to serve as well as he already has in his new role.

INVESTMENT IN INFRASTRUCTURE AND INDUSTRY

It is with great concern that I address the current state of our nation's infrastructure. Once a symbol of strength and progress, our roads, bridges, and public works have fallen into disrepair, weakened by years of neglect and underinvestment. Crumbling roads impede trade, aging mines slow industry, and failing bridges endanger our people. We can no longer stand idly by as our nation’s foundation erodes beneath us. If we wish to preserve our prosperity and safeguard our future, decisive action is not just necessary—it is imperative.

As Lord Treasurer, I am proud to announce a bold and unwavering commitment to the revitalization of our infrastructure. Already, treasury workers have begun the task of cleaning the Midlands which still lie in disarray and ruin from the destruction of the Covenant War. We shall not only continue this work, but expand upon it as we strive to repair and build the vital passageways of our kingdom, ensuring that our roads are complete, our bridges strong, and our industries equipped to meet the demands of the present and the future. With this will come the construction of new public works also - monuments, shrines, and waystations, as well as the organization and repair of existing ones, so that all facets of Haeseni culture and history will be readily available to those who walk our paths. Any families who wish to assist the treasury in these efforts should send letters to myself or to the deputy treasurer.

HOUSING AND COMMERCE

After much planning and preparation, the village of Waltonburg is finally ready to break ground on a long-awaited construction effort that will bring new life to the community. No longer shall the dark ruins of undead evils stain the land of the descendents of Sigismund! On the Crown’s command, the Treasury will hire engineers and architects to bring His Majesty’s vision to life, and to restore what was once a proud settlement of the crownlands, and to provide additional housing opportunities for those seeking to settle in our Kingdom.

In addition to the construction efforts in Waltonburg, the Treasury is proud to announce plans to construct an open market along the road to the city of New Valdev! This space will be used to encourage both international and local commerce, with merchants and tradesmen offered stall space to peddle their wares so close to the active beating heart of the Kingdom. More details to come soon.

The future has never held so much possibility for the Haeseni people, and it is my sincere belief that the investments this office makes today will yield benefits for generations to come! We must remember, a society grows great when people plant trees whose shade they know they shall never enjoy. AS THE GENERATIONS CHANGE, SO TOO MUST TIME PRESS US ONWARD. As a child, I dreamt often of the great men and women who had led the Haeseni to greatness in time long passed. The formidable Prince Otto Alimar, or the diligent Iosif Basrid were not far from my thoughts when it came to my girlhood aspirations of one day becoming Palatine of the realm. At that time, I was the youngest child of a dead heiress. I had thought my destiny was to be forgotten - perhaps only a footnote in the telling of our nation’s history.

All of that changed when I decided that my life meant little when compared to that of Koeng Ivan VIII’s own, flinging myself into the path of an explosive potion meant to claim his life by the hand of a would-be assassin. From that day forward, my existence was entirely transformed. Wedded to a prince and named as Lady Emissar, I was entrusted with much and more by the House of Barbanov-Bihar in those years that followed. Eventually, my diligent service to the Crown was further rewarded upon the retirement of Count Erik Kortrevich as Lord Palatine. It was I who was named as his successor - the first royal woman to assume the cherished Golden Bulava.

For eighteen years, I have given every piece of my being to my beloved kingdom and the Haeseni who reside within it. From the day the Golden Bulava was pressed into my hands, I felt a greater calling - a destiny to be fulfilled. Through the woes of King Marius III, who was so often bedridden or otherwise disinterested in the day-to-day governance of his inherited land, I paved a path forward that ensured our kingdom’s continued survival. He placed his faith in me to not only guide his subjects, but to also raise his eldest son to manhood. That was perhaps the greatest gift of all.

His Majesty, King Karl IV is one of my proudest achievements. A young leader worthy of his name and the throne he sits upon. A man of strong mind and formidable will, who is more like a son than a nephew by marriage. But as so many mothers are oft to do, there comes a time when we must allow our children to lead themselves - to make their own choices. The regency is long over, and the King is a boy no longer.

Thus, with my fullest trust placed in his ability to lead the Haeseni people into this Karolean Age, I hereby announce my retirement from my position as LADY PALATINE, effective immediately. I trust that my successor shall serve my royal nephew faithfully, representing the wishes and desires of this upcoming generation.

It has been my greatest honor to serve as your Palatine. Born to be irrelevant, I only wished to be of some use. I believe I have far exceeded expectations.

WITHIN THOSE REDDENED WALLS of the Kastell Lesanov, Emma peered out the frosted window, her gaze drifting over the lively streets of New Valdev below. The city bustled with movement – merchants bartering their wares, children darting between stalls, and the rhythmic clatter of hooves against cobbled streets echoing through the crisp morning air. It was a scene she had witnessed countless times, yet today it felt different. The streets teemed with faces she had known since their youth, children she had once watched stumble through their first steps, now grown into capable men and women. Many of them, she realized with a pang of bittersweet pride, she had a hand in raising – if not as their mother, then as a guiding figure in their lives.

Her fingers absentmindedly brushed against the strands of gray streaking through her dark hair. The change had come faster than she expected, though she knew well enough the cause; years of service upon the Aulic Council had finally taken their toll. Two Kings she had served faithfully, dedicating herself wholly to the realm. The weight of diplomacy, of forging alliances and mending fractured ties, sat heavily upon her shoulders for many years thus.

Emma expelled a weary sigh, her breath fogging the icy glass. She had never been meant for politics; not truly. Her heart had always been too soft, too fragile for the ruthless complexities of it all. Yet in her softness, she found strength. That same tender heart endeared her to allies both near and far, allowing her to weave bonds of trust and loyalty that ensured the Kingdom’s stability for generations to come. Eighteen years she had labored in service to the realm, each one harder than the last.

The corners of her lips curved into a faint smile as she noted a pair of children bumbling through those dear, familiar streets. It had not all been hardship. There was joy in knowing she had played a role, however small, in shaping the future of her people. But as the years passed, the joy had grown heavier, and the weight of her responsibilities had hardened her once-soft heart.

It was time, she realized, to let that heart finally rest. Turning from the window, Emma crossed the room to her desk. The wooden surface was cluttered with letters and documents, each one a reminder of the endless tasks that had filled her days. She reached for a blank sheet of parchment and dipped her quill into the inkwell.

The words came slowly at first, but with each stroke, the weight lifted from her shoulders. As she penned that notice of her impending retirement, she saw the faintest flicker of the girl she had once been – a girl who had never dreamed of politics but had embraced it out of duty and love for her Kingdom. When she set the quill down, she leaned back in her chair, her gaze landing upon the window before her once more. The streets of New Valdev bustled on, indifferent to her decision, yet she felt a quiet peace settle over her. It was time to step away, to let others carry the burden she had borne for so long. 

She allowed herself to imagine those quieter days ahead – her hands ink-stained from hours of writing treatises on Koravian culture, the soft rustle of parchment filling the silence, and the distant laughter of her grandchildren echoing through the halls. It was a life she had yearned for in the quiet moments between duty, and now, at last, it was within her grasp. With a steadying breath, Emma folded the letter, sealing it with the emblem of the Emissar and placed it neatly atop the stack of correspondence.

Her service to the Kingdom had been her greatest honor, but now it was time to embrace the peace she had long denied herself; time to let the stories she had helped shape live on not through decrees or treaties, but through the quiet power of words and memory.

FOR EIGHTEEN YEARS, I have served the realm as Lady Emissar, dedicating my efforts to the prosperity and stability of our great nation. It has been a journey marked by triumphs and trials in equal measure, but above all, it has been a privilege to serve this land and its people with all my heart. 

I never was a politically-minded sort, yet the Lady Palatine saw fit to vest her faith in me; entrusting me with the position despite my initial reservations. Her belief in my abilities compelled me to serve, and serve I did. Months of tireless work were poured into planning joint festivities, forging treaties, and leading negotiations with our allies.

Over the years, I have witnessed the culmination of a generation, many of whom I had the joy of watching grow from children into steadfast men and women who now carry the Kingdom forward. Of course, my time in service has come at a cost (as evidenced by the graying of my hair), but I would not trade a moment of it for anything. To have served two Kings alongside so many dedicated leaders is an honor I will carry for the rest of my days.

Even still, the most steadfast servant must one day lay down their burdens, and I find that day has come for me. In stepping away from this role, I look forward to returning to the simpler joys of life within Jerovitz and leave with a heart full of gratitude for the support and trust the Haeseni people have placed in me throughout these seventeen years.

To the next Lady or Lord Emissar, I offer you my well wishes. This role is not an easy one, and you will oftentimes find yourself stretched thin. Rely on your fellow councillors and ambassadors, for they are your greatest allies in the service of this Kingdom. Above all else, do not let the frivolity of politics sour your heart. The weight of diplomacy will feel unforgivingly heavy, but you must always remain true to yourself and to the love you bear for Haense and its people.

THE KING WAS LEADING THE CHARGE OF COUNCILORS, NOBLES, COMMONERS; MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN. Everyone high and low, including even visitors from abroad. They marched with him at the head to the banks of the River Lahy, just beyond the city limits where the cold winds of the Ailmere blew downstream and met the warmer breeze of the south. Here, with the walls of the Royal City across the water still in view and with the woods to their back, was where Karl had decided a fitting spot for the ceremony would be. Here, where the river surged and the rapids ended, lived a swirling channel that never ceased churning up blocks of melting ice. He stepped onto the dock with a creak. Despite its foreboding and violent appearance, Karl thought of the place fondly. Afterall it was the first place outside of the city walls he’d ever been. Led astray by a boy he had been friends with for all of a day, but one now whose name he couldn’t bring to mind. This was where the two of them had tossed stones and took great delight in watching them flow round and round until they were sucked down to the depths of the Lahy.

The King’s gaze was settled on that twisting torrent now after having sent a pebble from the dock’s end into it. He regarded it with decidedly less enjoyment this time as it was whisked away down the basin. Karl’s attention was snatched away when Andrei Kortrevich, both his friend and the prospective Paramount similar in age to himself, flung the tent flap wide and stepped through into the bracing night air. He’d stripped off his armour and came humbly in his lightest clothing. Ah yes, the next stone to be tossed thought Karl, his concern already started to turn his stomach when Andrei joined him on the end of the jetty. He instructed the knight to take a knee. 

“I have deemed you worthy of undertaking our hallowed rite and have faith that you will succeed where others in the past have not. Should you wish to serve as the Knight Paramount of Hanseti-Ruska you must complete this task I have laid before you without complaint and without aid. You alone must prove your worth to all us present and to the Skies above.”

The murmurs had begun already. “He will manage it, he’s been through much worse," one said. Another incredulously added “But he’ll bloody well drown!?” The comments continued but Karl proceeded nonetheless.

“The Drowning of the Blades will test you both mentally and physically. It is a task you may not return from. Do you understand?”

“Ea understand wholeheartedly, Vyr Majesty. Yam willing to take that risk.” Andrei’s answer was swift and confident. Too confident chided Karl in his mind. 

He reached down to his sword and slid it free from the ornate scabbard. It was a beautiful thing, even to Karl who ordinarily had little appreciation for weaponry. The blade itself almost shone when the light caught. The grip was an octagon made of black and white pearlescent panels set below the gilded crossguard shaped to resemble the Teutonic cross. A masterwork of forging and bladesmithing.

Karl hurled it into the middle of the whirlpool where it disappeared near instantly beneath the ice and rapids.

“Your King has lost the Sword of Blessed Gaius Marius, the weapon upon which every Marian Oath is sworn.” Karl addressed Andrei with the most neutral of expressions as if he had not just launched one of the most famed weapons in the world to the depths of a freezing river. “No new knights may be inducted into the Retinue until it is retrieved. You must return it to my hand, Ser Andrei Kortrevich, or die trying.”

The Kortrevich, who had been briefed before on the details of this ceremony, knew to waste no time. He lurched to his feet and took a running start off the pier. He dove straight into the centre of the vortex. Andrei disappeared from view just as the sword and stones before him had; only it was never expected they would appear back on their own. Andrei would have to. Even if only to prove some of those naysayers on the bank wrong about him being too young or unworthy of the honour. 

“You will pledge your life and honour to the line of Barbov and all the Edlervik. You shall always heed the word of the King of Crows and his counsel, even if it shall surely mean your end.” Karl began on the altered oath every knight swears. 

Countess Emma, Andrei’s mother, was already looking green about the gills with worry. He will be well and emerge soon, I'm sure Andrei’s friend and King was confident.

“You shall never cower from the enemies of your King, lest you fall on your sword. You shall cover yourself in glory, that you might stand among the heroes of our people, and be worthy of their admiration.”

Newcomers arrived and the rumblings continued. “What’re we staring at. . .?” one such person asked with a confused frown. “We are waiting to see if our prospective Knight Paramount drowns or not.” came his cousin’s voice. Some who were sure of the knight’s success at the start were now less so and giving in to their worries, faces etched with it. He will be well and emerge soon I’m sure Karl’s resolve was weakening some. He knitted his brows and continued.

“You shall take charge of every page, squire and knight in this hallowed realm and are bid to do so as the Knight Paramount. Rise now, the Knight Paramount of the Marian Retinue, from this day until your oath's end.”

“Be quiet!” hissed Andrei’s mother to some of the more callous whispers pertaining to the knight’s fate. “Have faith. He will return shortly.” responded Prince Aleksandr. Unlike his royal cousin, Karl’s faith was wavering but hopelessness tempts fate to stay its course. He will be well and emerge soon I’m sure Karl reminded himself. His eyes bore at the spot where Andrei had disappeared many moments ago. Too long ago.

“There he is!” cried a noble lord who pointed at the water's surface near the dock.

From the pitch black depths a hand breached through and gripped tight in a pale quaking hand was the Sword of Gaius Marius. The candle light from the embankment caught the metal of the blade and the drops of water that slipped down its length. It glinted in the light like something otherworldly. Something that breathed hope back into the crowd and settled their troubles. Thank the Skies and all their Blessed Karl exhaled a subtle sigh of relief. Before long, the rest of Andrei’s shape appeared and made for the pier. He hooked the sword’s guard on a plank and heaved himself up onto the jetty with it as purchase. The knight, fortunate to be alive, struggled to his feet. He was soaked to the bone and shivered from the chill, teeth chattering. Despite his suffering, Andrei held out the sword shakily towards his King and once Karl had taken it he knelt before him.

“Ser Andrei Kortrevich, having proven yourself this day worthy of holding the title of many a famed knight and displaying valour beyond measure. . .” Karl lowered the sword's blade first onto Andrei’s right shoulder “are hereby, by the prerogative of the Crown of Hanseti-Ruska and by the demands of fate,” Karl tapped Andrei upon the left shoulder with the flat of the sword “entrusted to wield the Steel Bulava in my name as Knight Paramount of Hanseti-Ruska!” 

The Sword of Gaius Marius was once more returned to its usual spot, rammed back with a snap of the hilt on the scabbard. Karl bid Andrei to rise with a graceful motion of his hand up and he did just that much to the cheers of the crowd. Chief among them Andrei’s mother who wept tears of joy and likely relief at finding her son topside once more with the added caveat of still breathing. Some of the members of the Marian Retinue took to a display of support by taking their swords still in their scabbard and drumming them on the sides of the path. One, misunderstanding or caught up in the revelry of it all, tossed his sword into the river and got an earful for it from another attendee. 

Frankly, Karl was relieved and, despite his station and role in the ceremony, let the guise of formality and etiquette slip for the moment to join in on the congratulations. He clapped his friend on the back and let a delighted, quiet laugh blow out his nose before he sent him along to embrace his mother who itched at the seams to hug her son and make him real once more. As she swaddled him in a cloak and preened over him like a mother bird with her chick they left the dock and made for the path back to the city. Karl waited a moment longer and cast a look over the swirling water that held many of his fondest memories. Now it holds one fond memory more.

 “What say we go back to the city and let the Knight Paramount get some heat back in his bones, huh?” recommended Karl with a clap of his hands after he tore his gaze from the river. He joined his people shoulder to shoulder on the march back.

As a show of our admiration for the work and the sword skill of the knight, we allow for him to retain the title Ser and to still represent the Crown in military matters against our enemies as a capable commander of soldiers.

As is the prerogative of the Crown, we did order Ser Andrei to undergo the ceremony known as the Drowning of the Blades, a time honoured tradition amongst the Haeseni to allow fate’s hand to display if they also believe the knight worthy of ascension. We are glad to have witnessed firsthand the knight rise from the waves with sword in hand. Thus, we do hereby appoint Ser Andrei Kortrevich @Gandhi to the position of Knight Paramount on account of his displayed bravery, fortune and honour. King Karl IV entrusts Ser Andrei with the Steel Bulava as Knight Paramount of Hanseti-Ruska to be wielded in his name.

Let this appointment be recorded in the annals of our history, and let all subjects acknowledge and respect the authority of the appointee and their office. Ser Andrei has held the position since 564 E.S. despite this writ being published officially in 565 E.S.

DIPLOMATIC AFFAIRS

◆ The Kingdom of Hanseti-Ruska and the Kingdom of Balian have reaffirmed their alliance through the renewal of the Pact of Monterosa. Under the guidance of newly crowned King Karl IV of Haense and King John II of Balian, both realms pledge mutual defense in the face of external threats. The terms of the pact stipulate that it shall remain valid until the passing of either sovereign.

◆ In a historic diplomatic development, our realm has joined a tri-defensive alliance alongside the Commonwealth of Petra and the Kingdom of Numendil known as the Garmont Pact. This agreement, negotiated by our King, Lady Palatine, and Prince Sigmar of Galhar, will serve as a unified front against potential threats and promote closer collaboration between the three signatories.

◆ On behalf of the Crown, I must express our gratitude to the Principality of Celia’nor for their continued vigilance and support. In a demonstration of good faith, the Lord Commander of Celia’nor, Jarad Mah’nel, facilitated the extradition of a criminal who conspired against the Royal House of Barbanov-Bihar. We thank him for his diligence and quick-thinking. 

◆ A significant diplomatic milestone was achieved with the signing of the Eternal Promise of Krug and Joren. This pact of indefinite non-aggression between Haense and the orcish clans solidifies peaceful relations for the foreseeable future. 

◆ The second iteration of the Hanso-Hyspian Artisan faire was held successfully in accordance with the terms outlined in the treaty between the Haeseni and Hyspian peoples. The event saw an impressive turnout of artisans and merchants, further strengthening cultural ties and promoting economic prosperity between the two realms.

As I turn to the future, it is clear that the work of diplomacy is never truly complete; rather, it is a tedious process defined equally by its challenges and triumphs alike, requiring constant attention and dedication. Yet, it is this very effort that ensures not only our own prosperity but the welfare of generations to come. It is by virtue of this that I am grateful for the duties that my role brings me.

We entrust the new Lord Treasurer to oversee the ingoings and outgoings of the Kingdom’s treasury as well as with its growth.

As is the prerogative of the Crown alone, we do hereby appoint Lord Duncan Baruch @Pureimp10, Count of Ayr, to the position of Lord Treasurer on account of his trustworthiness and closeness with His Royal Majesty as well as his skill at accruing new funds as displayed by his payment of his father’s debts to the Crown, an act thought impossible in one payment. King Karl IV entrusts Lord Duncan with the Silver Bulava as Lord Treasurer of Hanseti-Ruska to be wielded in his name.

Let this appointment be recorded in the annals of our history, and let all subjects acknowledge and respect the authority of the appointee and their office. We thank the late Lord Treasurer Henrik-Otto Ludovar for their years of leal service and pray that their soul has safely joined the Skies.

◆ In collaboration with the Principality of Reinmar, the two nations hosted a series of joint cultural events, including an orchestra performance, a spirited game tournament, and a baking competition. We, the Crown, are in need of a Royal Curator to fill the role following the retirement of the former Curator, Lord Rickard Kortrevich. As to remind our people what the role entails we shall explain briefly the expectations of the position. The Royal Curator shall sit on the Aulic Council as the cultural adviser, master of archives, and as the Kingdom’s pre-eminent historian. They are entrusted as well to find suitable individuals to make up their office and act as historians and teachers to aid in the process of educating our peoples.

Further adding to the Curator’s responsibilities will be done through new means devised by the King to both make the position a more functional one as well as to reach a wider group of peoples. History and its study will no longer be unofficially limited to those born with the means to be well educated regardless of aptitude but to all Haeseni peoples. From farmers in Waltonburg all the way to those who live more simple lives in the Haeseni hinterlands. All should have access to a basic education of our long spanning and accomplished history as well as our culture and its importance. 

As such, the Royal Curator will work in tandem with the Band of Saint Tuvya. The Band’s commitment to building up better infrastructure, by way of renovating roads, building hubs of worship and gathering places in the often neglected regions of the Kingdom, and preserving or enhancing natural spots of beauty where people might congregate, will be utilised in part by the office of the Curator. Not just will lessons be held in classrooms and at our court but throughout the land and to all those from different walks of life. 

Therefore, the Most Honourable DAVYD COLBORN @JuliusAakerlund, Margrave of Kazan, has been selected as a more than fitting replacement as exemplified by work on ‘The Principality of Slesvik’ and on account of his general aptitude. His Majesty King Karl IV entrusts Lord Davyd Colborn with the Lead Bulava as Royal Curator of Hanseti-Ruska.

THESE TIMES OF GREATER WORK REQUIRE GREATER HANDS. Since Lord Sigmar var Ruthern’s elevation to the role of Lord Speaker, the position of Deputy Palatine has remained vacant. For a time thereafter, I felt that I was able to maintain my duties as Lady Palatine without the aid of another who could stand in my place or oversee lesser projects on my behalf. Not to mention the undeniable controversy that has followed this secondary position following its previous two appointments. It has sat idle for these saint’s weeks, whilst the Aulic Council has pressed onward in its diligent work.

But, as our children grow and our people contend with the threats of Ailmere, I desire that same right hand that I myself am for the Koeng. An individual who I can trust will uphold my will and conduct themselves in a manner befitting of their role and in representation of the Crown. Thus, we call upon and appoint Baron-Emeritus Alekszej Korvacz ( @psychra_notte ) to the position of Deputy Palatine, for his lifelong service to our nation and the Haeseni people. We expect he shall continue to aid the kingdom in its furthered prosperity.

Lord Korvacz will subsequently be taking up the vacated seat upon the Boyar Council, so that he might sit in upon meetings of the Aulic Council and be part of its governance. He is likewise dismissed from his position as Jovenaar to prevent any conflict in his newfound duties.

THE FUNERAL OF THE QUEEN

The late Queen Juliya of Reinmar will be honored with a funeral organized by the Royal Court, in collaboration with the Office of the Emissar and her kinsmen in Reinmar. This international event will pay tribute to her legacy and reinforce the bond between the Crown and the Reinmaren people in the coming Saint’s days.

THE HEARSAY OF HANSETI-RUSKA

An investigation into the Hearsay of Hanseti-Ruska is being conducted by the Office of the Emissar due to its diplomatic repercussions. Insults aimed at our late Reinmaren-born Queen have caused offense among allies in Reinmar, who have since demanded justice for the perpetrator. The Crown has been informed and will continue its oversight of the investigation under the supervision of the Lady Palatine.

THE PACT OF THE GILDED HARVEST

The Vale and the Haeseni have renewed their non-aggression agreement, continuing the efforts of my predecessor, Princess Milena. In honor of the treaty, both realms will host a cultural exchange event to foster goodwill and shared cultural understanding.

The renewed defensive pact between Celia'nor and Haense, established during the tenure of Princess Milena, remains strong. Both realms have agreed to exchange critical information regarding threats of lingering Shadowspawn in their lands. THE UNDEAD UPRISING

A cult uprising is attacking Hefrumm, with Haense prepared to offer aid to the dwed in the area should they call upon them. Attacks have also been reported against dwed in Numendil. The uprising is being led by Grelu, the former King of Urguan, and Thorim Stoutheart. Informants will continue their investigations.

THE XIONISTS

Lumbridge has become the main hub of Xionist activity in recent years, and the Haeseni have since taken up arms against the foes that linger upon our northern borders. It is alleged that the group is seeking alliances with both weavers and vampyres. The Haeseni will continue to coordinate their attacks with the help of their allies in Koyo-Kuni and Balian. 

THE IBLEESIAN INCURSION

Allies in Celia'nor are under the threat of an Ibleesian incursion. Hooded figures descended upon the city, threatening to raze the capital to the ground. Reportedly, the vagrants spoke in a strange tongue, as red lightning struck the skies above. Haeseni informants will continue to investigate the source of these dark magicks.

VE NADZIESK KORT STANDS AS THE LEGACY OF OUR LATE KOENAS. In the saint’s days and weeks since her passing, a period of mourning has hung over the Kasstel Lesanov like a great and eerie fog. However, it is not the desire of the Crown to see our palatial halls forever shrouded in shadow, nor do we believe that is what Koenas Juliya would have desired for her adopted homeland.

Lady Svetlana Colborn served diligently, being a close friend and confidante to our late-Koenas. She has hosted countless festivities and auctions alongside ensuring the royal seat kept a vast array of servants and courtly figures under our employ. In her retirement, we can only offer her our thanks for her continued service to both the Crown and to our kingdom.

As made known by Lady Colborn, her successor is an obvious choice. For her work as Crow Warden and proven dedication to the well-being of the Kasstel Lesanov, the Crown appoints Lady Mahaut van Leuven ( @pomegrad) to the position of Grand Lady of Ve Nadziesk Kort. We look forward to what innovations and creativity she brings to this integral role whilst wielding the Rose Bulava.
